Discussion: Alternative Psychologies (Due 1/17/18)
Thus far in your experience as a psychology student, you have been introduced to the field of psychology in terms of the mind and its functions in relationship to human behavior. Most introductory psychology textbooks and resources for other psychology classes emphasize a cause-and-effect scientific model, which typifies traditional psychology in the United States and the Western hemisphere in general. Throughout this course and in your course text, you read about Western psychology, which is representative of the practice of psychology in the United States.
Alternative psychologies evolved independently of Western psychology because they are suitable for the needs of non-Western cultures. One notable difference is that alternative psychologies prioritize collective or group processes over isolated individual processes. Alternative psychologies view individuals as reflections of the larger culture or society. While the various alternative psychologies do have differences, they also have common themes such as those outlined in your course text: meaning-making, collective construction of psychological reality, time-dependent processes, and normative explanations.
Liberation psychology, which is one type of alternative psychology, has been used to address the needs of the poor and the oppressed in Latin America. With liberation psychology, the focus is on social change. Social change is possible when attempts are made to improve the conditions of the entire community rather than to only address the needs of one specific individual within the group. Additionally, this type of alternative psychology makes a difference by addressing challenges of the native people where they live, in their professions, and in the world around them. Liberation psychology also helps people understand what they need in order to facilitate change.

2. INTRODUCTION
Counseling and psychotherapy offer an opportunity for counselors to help
others who experience personal distress.
Psychotherapists and counselors have developed theories (methods) to
help individuals with a wide variety of personal problems.
This course offers an opportunity to learn about different theories that
will increase your understanding of psychotherapy and counseling. You
will have the opportunity to decide which theories you would prefer to
use, given the opportunity to do so.
This course will also explore the ways that theories of counseling can be
used in a variety of student affairs occupations.
3. INTRODUCTION
Each class period will be spent explaining and illustrating the reading
which describes (usually) one or two theories of psychotherapy and
counseling.
To explain and illustrate theories, lectures will focus on some of the more
complex aspects of the theories.
Video tapes of therapy, role-playing by the instructor and/or students, and
small discussion groups will be used to provide answers to questions that
are described next.
4. INTRODUCTION
History or background - How was the theory developed? What ideas
influenced the theoretical development?
Personality theory - How does the theorist explain and view human
behavior, thoughts, and/or feelings? How does the theorist understand the
client’s problems?
Techniques of psychotherapy and counseling - (This is the most important
focus of the course).
What are the goals or purpose of the theory? How do counselors and
others assess or conceptualize behavior, thoughts, or feelings? Which
tests or inventories are used? What techniques or methods are used to
change behavior, thoughts, and/or feelings?
5. INTRODUCTION
Other areas of the text will be covered to varying
degrees in class. These include:
Applications to psychological disorders - What
techniques are used to bring about changes in
disorders such as depression, generalized anxiety,
and borderline disorders?
Current trends - How is the theory changing in its
techniques and training methods?
Using the theory with other theories - How flexible is
the theory? How can its techniques be combined
with those from another theory? How do integrative
therapists use theories? (Eclectivism)
6. INTRODUCTION
Multicultural issues - What cultural values are
implicit in the theory? How does the theory
attend to the concerns of individuals from
different cultures?
Group counseling - How can the theories and
their techniques be applied to group therapy?
7. What is a Theory
Psychology was influenced by Descartes and later on by the
developments in physics has grown by following what is called a
hypothetico-deductive model.
The model suggests that scientific advancement can take place if you
have a theory to explain a phenomenon.
For example, physicists have what is called a Big-bang theory to
explain how the universe came to be formed.
Theory is a set of statements about how a certain complex
phenomenon can be explained with the help of propositions which are
interrelated.
Based on a theory, scientists deduce or propose a hypothesis, that
offers a tentative explanation of how a certain phenomenon takes
place.
The hypothesis is then tested and proved true or false based on
empirical data that one has gathered. The theory is revised if data
gathered point in a different direction than the one suggested by the
hypothesis.
8. Psychological Theories
Using the approach of a hypothesis psychologists have
developed theories of learning, memory, attention,
perception, motivation and emotion, counselling etc.
and have made significant progress.
To date, most of the research in psychology follows this
approach of having a theory first.
Apart from this, psychologists have also been
considerably influenced by the evolutionary approach
which is dominant in biological sciences. This approach
has also been used to explain diverse kinds of
psychological phenomenon such as attachment, love,
addiction, trauma and aggression to mention just a few
