Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is

Leadership is an act and not a position-
title and positions are inconsequential in
leadership.
Titles, positions only stand to increase or
erase leadership influence- depending on
usage
Leadership as an art is about possibilities,
opportunities, challenges/obstacles and
hope where many doubt.
6. Leadership as an art is about understanding
capabilities and delegating for success.
Leadership as an act requires, social,
emotional and people skills.
It requires self awareness, ability to
empathize, to be compassionate, discerning,
adaptable, inspirational and fair.

and above all the ability to develop others

7. ATTRIBUTES/TRAITS OF EFFECTIVE LEADERS
GUIDING VISION – knowing what to be done and having the strength
and character to pursue same in spite of failures.
PASSION- passionate believers in their goals- they have a positive
outlook on who they are and love what they do.
INTEGRITY- They are self-aware- appreciating their strength and
weaknesses – live for their words and implement their
promises.
HONESTY - They carry and convey an aura of honesty in their
professional and personal life.
TRUST- They earn the trust of followers and are truthful with
their followers.
8. CURIOSITY- Leaders are always willing to learn.
RISK- Effective leaders take calculated risks when
necessary to achieve their objectives-They accept
short-comings and learn from their mistakes. Ability
to explore other avenues to solve problems.
DEDICATION- They are dedicated individuals and work assiduously
towards goals on behalf of followers.
CHARISMATIC- Leaders covey maturity, respect, compassion,
sense of humor and love towards humanity. They
have the ability and capability to motivate
others.
LISTENING- Leaders are active listeners and do not exhibit the
all knowing spirit.
9. Managers establish and implement procedures to ensure
smooth functioning.
Leaders look to the future and chart the course for
organizations.
Managers have authority by virtue of the position in the
firm.
Leaders show subordinates they trust, respect and care
about them.
Leaders initiate structures; take steps to make sure that
work gets done, subordinates perform the work
acceptably.
Managers assign tasks to groups and make subordinates
handle the task.
10. CHALLENGES OF LEADERSHIP
REJECTION- The fear of rejection and being misunderstood.
CRITICISM- The nature of leadership responsibility invokes feeling of
criticisms.
LONELINESS- Leaders are deserted in times of difficulties and moments of
critical decisions.
PRESSURE AND PERPLEXITY- Leaders face the challenges of the responsibilities and
demands of leadership.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL FATIQUE- Leadership places a heavy demand on occupants of the
positions (stress, physical and mental demands).
PRICE PAID BY THOSE CLOSEST TO YOU- The tremendous cost that will be born those close to
you (family).Leadership demands the giving of
oneself to others Your life becomes the property of
those whom you serve.
11. RECIPE/STRATEGIES FOR BEING A LEADER
Take control of your life and know yourself.
Convey a positive and dynamic attitude in all your
dealings.
Accept blame – learn from mistakes and take
responsibility for group failure.
Give credit whenever it is due.
Be compassionate when you review progress or
otherwise.
Think great thoughts.
Turn disasters into opportunities- Turn obstacles into
personal triumph.
Determine real goals and strive to achieve them.

Lead by example and by activity /doing.
Listen effectively
Encourage teamwork and participation.

13. CONCLUSION
Leadership is an act and an art as it requires
the whole lot of skills to succeed.
Effective leadership depends wholly on the
traits and style of the leader.
Leadership and management are not the same
although they look closely related
