The Zodiac killer operated in Northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He committed at least five murders and claimed responsibility for more. He sent taunting letters and cryptograms to newspapers and police but was never identified. Arthur Leigh Allen was the prime suspect but was never charged and his fingerprints did not match those at the crime scenes. The Zodiac killer remains unidentified.
This presentation will give you an overview of how Digital Forensics helped to catch Dennis Lynn Rader, an American serial killer known as BTK (an abbreviation he gave himself, for "bind, torture, kill"), the BTK Strangler or the BTK Killer.
An overview of the Zodiac Killer Cipher Generator, an online tool that can be used to create homophonic substitution ciphers similar to the ones created by the Zodiac Killer.

What was the St. Valentines Day Massacre?Bob Mayer
14 February 1929. The mob rules in Chicago, but it's between Bugs Moran and Al Capone. Capone decide to make a statement, even though he's currently in Florida. There was one survivor-- what if?
Son of Sam and the explosion of tabloid journalismBob Mayer
I remember 1976-1977. I lived in the Bronx and he shot a girl I'd gone to elementary school with. I also delivered the NY Post, but Rupert Murdoch bought it in 1976, just in time for Son of Sam's killing and journalism has never recovered.
2. Who/What is Rodiac?
• Zodiac literally:
• A band around the sky about 18°
wide, centered on the ecliptic, in which the
Sun, Moon, and planets move.
The band is divided into 12 signs of the
zodiac, each 30° long, that were named by the
ancient Greeks after the constellations that
used to occupy these positions

Jensen & David Faraday on
December 20, 1968, on Lake
Herman Road, just inside Benicia city
limits.
• At 11:00 pmDied!
5. BLUE ROCK SPRINGS PARK -
Vallejo, California
• Flashlight into Mageau's and Ferrin's eyes
before shooting at them, firing five times.
Both victims were hit, several bullets passing
through Mageau and into Ferrin.
• The killer walked away from the car but upon
hearing Mageau's moaning, returned and shot
each victim twice more before driving off.
• At around 12:00 pm Died on the spot!
7. Riddle, Code, or just nonsense?
• On August 1, 1969, three letters prepared by the killer were
received at the Vallejo Times-Herald, the San Francisco Chronicle,
and theSan Francisco Examiner.
• One-third of a 408-symbol cryptogram which the killer claimed
contained his identity.
• The killer demanded they be printed on each paper's front page or
he would "cruse around all weekend killing lone people in the night
then move on to kill again, until I end up with a dozen people over
the weekend."
8. Lake Berryessa attack
• Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard were picnicking at Lake
Berryessa on a small island connected by a sand spit to Twin
Oak Ridge.
• A man approached them wearing a black executioner's-type
hood with clip-on sunglasses over the eye-holes and a bib-
like device on his chest that had a white 3"x3" cross-circle
symbol on it.
9. Lake Berryessa attack
• Cecelia Shepard was conscious when Collins arrived, providing
him with a detailed description of the attacker.
• Shepard lapsed into a coma during transport to the hospital
and died two days later
• Hartnell survived to recount his tale to the press.
• Napa County Sheriff Detective Ken Narlow, who was assigned
to the case from the outset, worked on solving the crime until
his retirement from the department in 1987.
• One die, another survive

11. Paul Stine
• Twenty-nine year old Paul Stine was a husband, student and
cabdriver until he picked up the Zodiac on the night of
October 11, 1969.
• The San Francisco Chronicle received a letter that began with
a familiar introduction. "This is the Zodiac speaking. I am the
murderer of the taxi driver over by Washington & Maple St.
last night. To prove this here is a blood stained piece of his
shirt."
12. More Letters
• On October 14, 1969, the Chronicle received another
letter from the Zodiac, this time containing a swatch
of Paul Stine's shirt tail as proof he was the killer;
• It also included a threat about killing schoolchildren
on a school bus. To do this, Zodiac wrote, "just shoot
out the front tire & then pick off the kiddies as they
come bouncing out."
13. More Letters
• On November 8, 1969, the Zodiac mailed a
card with another cryptogram consisting of
340 characters.
• The 340-character cipher has never been
decoded. Numerous possible "solutions" have
been suggested, but none can be claimed as
definitive.
14. More Letters
• On November 9, 1969, the Zodiac mailed a 7-
Pages letter in which he claimed that two
policemen stopped and actually spoke with
him three minutes after he shot Stine.
• Excerpts from the letter were published in
the Chronicle on November 12

18. Prime Suspect---Arthur Leigh Allen
• Arthur Leigh Allen was the only suspect in the Zodiac murders
to be served search warrants by police. He was never charged
with any Zodiac-related crime and his fingerprints did not
match those left by the killer of taxi cab driver Paul Stine.
• In 1991, 22 years after the shootings, survivor Michael
Mageau identified Allen as the man who shot him, from a
photo lineup of 1968 driver's licenses.
• Mageau stated he had never been shown a photo line up
prior to that appointment in 1991.Allen, who suffered
from diabetes, died on August 26, 1992 from kidney failure.
