The zodiac killer terrorized the San Francisco area in the late 1960s with a series of unsolved murders and cryptic messages to police. Some of the confirmed victims included teenagers David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen who were shot on their first date, as well as taxi driver Paul Stine who was shot point blank. The killer sent taunting letters and coded ciphers to newspapers to boast of the crimes. Despite extensive investigations and several suspects, the zodiac killer was never identified and the case remains unsolved.

Presented here is the description of a serial homicide investigation in the 1960s that involved
the sexually motivated murders of seven mostly college-aged women in Michigan. The
discussion provided here draws primarily on Edward Keyes’s, The Michigan Murders.1 The
case is longer and more detailed than the other From the Case File chapter introductions.
It can serve as a capstone discussion of many of the issues covered in Criminal Investigation,
including the basic problems of criminal investigation, the value of eyewitness identifica-
tions, the value of other evidence, the potential value of DNA evidence, how proof can be
established, and the impact of technology on investigations. Questions for discussion and
review are presented at the conclusion of the case.

The Coed Murders
The nightmare began on the evening of July 10, 1967,
when nineteen-year-old Mary Fleszar did not return
to her apartment, which was located just a few
blocks from the Eastern Michigan University (EMU)
campus in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Mary was a student at
the university. As is the case in most missing person
investigations, the first task for investigators was to
determine when and where she was last seen. In
reconstructing the last known whereabouts of Mary,
an EMU police officer recalled seeing a girl matching
her description walking near campus at about
8:45 p.m. the night before she was reported missing.
She was alone. Another witness reported he had seen
the girl at about 9:00 p.m. that same night in the same
area, walking on the sidewalk. The witness reported
that a car had driven up next to her and stopped.
According to report the witness gave, the only person
in the vehicle was a young man, and the vehicle was
bluish-gray in color, possibly a Chevy. The witness said
it appeared that the young man inside the car said
something to Mary, she shook her head, and the car
drove off. Shortly thereafter, the same car passed the
witness’s house again and pulled into a driveway in
front of Mary, blocking her path. Mary walked around
the back of the car and continued down the sidewalk.
The car pulled out of the driveway and, tires squealing,
drove down the street. At this point the witness lost
sight of Mary and the vehicle. Mary was never again
seen alive.
On August 7, 1967, a heavily decomposed nude body
was found on farmland two miles north of Ypsilanti.
The body was identified as Mary Fleszar through
dental records. It was clear to investigators that the
cause of death was certainly not natural, accidental,
or suicide, given the area.

Serial murderer – an introduction
The crime of manslaughter has been known for a long time, to be specifically the early 1600’s but the initial case of a serial murderer was in the year 1888, named, Jack the Ripper, who killed and mutilated five prostitutes in the East London. Field experts have stated that at any time, the United States has around 50 active serial murderers, owing to the fact that arroba the year multiple homicides have occurred. Now the question arises, who is a serial killer?
A person possessing a specific emotional drive to kill mercilessly is termed as a serial murderer. These murders, killings, manslaughters, or homicides are generally done in a different way that distinguishes one serial murderer from another. The killer often has a sign that they are distinguished with. Serial murderers are kept in the page as being mass- slayers. The only difference being that serial murderers do not naturally kill the way mass murderers/ slayers do, i.e. mass slayers don’t leave breaks in committing the merciless murders. On the other hand, serial murderers tend to have a distinct feature that reflects the fact that they are murderers with a psychotic overdrive (Ellens, 2011).
Jeffrey Dahmer
Nearly 25 years ago, one of America’s most infamous serial murderers, Jeffrey Dahmer, a paedophile, and a cannibal, was confronted, attacked and mercilessly slayed while cleaning the bathroom of a prison. His span of crime ranged from June 18, 1978 till July 19, 1991.
Jeffrey Dahmer, also known as Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster, was an American serial murderer and a sex criminal who brutally raped and then killed 17 men and boys between the years 1978 to 1991. Several of those later homicides consisted of preservation of several body parts of the victims, necrophilia and cannibalism. Though he was initially diagnosed with several mental diseases like borderline personality disorder, a psychotic disorder, and schizotypal personality disorder, Dahmer was found to be legitimately stable at his probation.
He was sentenced for fifteen terms of life custody on February 15, 1992 for the fifteen of the sixteen homicides that he had committed in Wisconsin. Later, he was condemned to a sixteenth term of life custody for an additional slaughter in 1978 in Ohio. Dahmer was crushed to death by Christopher Scarver On November 28th, 1994 at the Columbia Correctional Institution (Martens, 2011).
Jeffery’s move into criminality- early years
It is reported by witnesses that as an infant, Dahmer was deprived of attention and love that a child expects from his parents. It is also reported that his mother was identified as a stressed, covetous, and argumentative lady who often quarrelled with her husband and their neighbours. As Dahmer entered the first grade, his mother .

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. The case
• A man who went by the name of the zodiac
killer was terrifying the city of San Diego
riverside township
• The Zodiac claimed 37 victims, although
police agencies only consider seven to be
definite Zodiac victims.
3. facts
• The notorious and very bizarre serial killer who called himself The Zodiac
remains one of the world's great unsolved cases. In Oct., 1966, a girl was
viciously murdered in Riverside, California when she permitted a man to
help start the car that he had intentionally disabled when she was in her
school library.
This homicide began a ghoulish series of murders that panicked the
people of the San Francisco area. For years the Zodiac taunted the police
with weird ciphers, phone calls, insulting and cryptic messages.
Even though police investigated over 2,500 potential suspects, the case
was never solved. There were a few suspects that stood out, but the
forensic technology of the times was not advanced enough to nail any one
of them conclusively.
4. letters
• The zodiac sent the police and newspapers
letters about his killings and of what how he did
them.
• The Zodiac sent at least 18 letters, usually to
newspapers but occasionally to private citizens.
The first letter was sent July 31, 1969 and the last
on July 8, 1974. In 1966, 1967 and 1978,
communications were received that might have
been from the Zodiac. However it's not known
for sure if he was the author.
5. cryptographs
• The zodiac killer also used cryptographs to
send coded messages to the police.
• The cryptographs were full of symbols and
shapes that made up a message
6. Possible suspects
• Many different suspects were interviewed about the case and
if they were involved
• Suspects:
• Arthur Leigh Allen:
• Found dead inside his house killed by the zodiac
• Bruce Davis
• Lawrence Kane
• Michael O'Hare
• Richard Marshall
• Ted Kaczynski (main suspect)
9. victims
• The following slides will tell you more about
some of the victims of the zodiac murder.
10. David Faraday
• Zodiac killer victim
• David Faraday, age 17, was shot once in the
head at point-blank range and died within
minutes
11. Betty Lou Jensen
• Age 16, was shot five times in the back and
killed instantly. The weapon was a .22 caliber
semi-automatic pistol.
• The ammunition was Winchester Western
Super X copper-coated long rifle.
12. Details on the two murders
• According to the police report, the victims were apparently approached while
occupying Faraday's station wagon. Shots were fired into the vehicle in an
apparent effort to force them out. Jensen exited the front passenger door first,
followed by Faraday. Faraday was shot as he emerged from the car, Jensen was
then shot as she fled on foot. It was the first date Jensen had ever been allowed
on and the crime shocked the community. The shooting could not be explained by
Faraday's family. Jensen's family was equally dumbfounded.
13. Darlene Ferrin
• Zodiac victim
• age 22
• was shot five times
• The weapon was a 9mm semi-automatic
pistol. There was no indication of robbery or
sexual molestation. There were no witnesses.
14. details
• Ferrin was married and worked as a waitress at Terry's Restaurant. Mageau was
single and worked as a laborer. Ferrin's husband, Dean, was initially a suspect in
the murder, however was ruled out once it was established he was working as a
cook at Caesar's Restaurant at the time of the murder. Ferrin's first husband,
James Phillips Crabtree, was also briefly a suspect. According to surviving victim
Mageau, he and Ferrin had parked at the isolated location to talk. A car, possibly a
light-brown Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Corvair, pulled into the lot just a few feet
away.
15. Mike Mageau
• age 19, was shot four times
• The weapon was a 9mm semi-automatic
pistol. There was no indication of robbery or
sexual molestation. There were no witnesses.
16. Cecelia Sheppard
• age 22
• was stabbed 10 times
• five in the front
• and five in the back.
17. Detail continued
• According to the police report, the couple was relaxing on a blanket at a very remote location by the lake. Shepard
noticed a man approaching them wearing an unusual costume and holding a gun. He appeared to be more than
6'0" tall with a heavy build. The man claimed he was a prison escapee from Colorado and needed money and a car
to flee to Mexico. Hartnell offered his wallet and car keys, which weren't taken. After several minutes of
conversation, the man tied the couple with plastic clothesline and began stabbing them. Hartnell was attacked
first, then Shepard. After the assault, the man walked casually away from the scene. After several minutes, a
nearby fisherman heard the couple screaming and alerted park rangers. By the time help arrived, Shepard and
Hartnell had managed to untie their restraints. It took nearly an hour for an ambulance to arrive, at which time
both victims were in critical condition
18. Brian Hartnel
• age 20
• was stabbed six times in the back.
• The knife had a wooden handle and a blade
approximately 10 to 12 inches long.
19. Paul Stine
• Cab driver Paul Stine, age 29, was shot once in
the head at point-blank range.
• The weapon was a 9mm semi-automatic
pistol, not the same 9mm used in the Ferrin
murder.
• There were three witnesses from a house on
the southeast corner of the intersection.
20. details
• Stine's cab was hailed at Mason and Geary Streets, with the intended destination being Washington and Maple
Streets near the Presidio. For reasons unknown, the cab ended up at Washington and Cherry Streets, a block away
from the original destination. Stine's wallet and keys were taken and a large portion of his shirt was carefully torn
off. Bloody fingerprints, potentially of the suspect, were recovered from the vehicle. According to a police
document, a pair of men's Size Seven black-leather gloves was also found. The three witnesses watched the
suspect from approximately 60 feet away as he wiped down the cab with a cloth after killing Stine. They called the
police and described a white male, 25 to 30 years old, 5'8" to 5'9", stocky build, reddish-brown hair worn in a crew
cut, heavy-rimmed glasses and dark clothing.
23. The end
• The zodiac killer is still at large today even
though there has been no incidents currently
• I think that the zodiac is either dead or old
and not capable of doing anything else
