Zodiac Killer History presentation

Editor's Notes

  • #3 The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer in California that was active from the mid sixties to the early seventies. He had 5 confirmed murders, 2 people survived and he himself claimed to have killed up to 37 people in total. The killer targeted young couples in secluded areas, sometimes unmasked which led to the character description on the left, and sometimes wearing an executioners hood as seen on the right. The Zodiac killer had extensive written communication with the authorities and the press which left clues as to his identity and confessions of his involvement in crimes and threats for crimes in the future. The Zodiac Killer has never been caught or identified and the case remains open still.
  • #5 DEC. 20 1968 High school students murdered in Califiornia. Jenson on her first date. David shot once in the head at point blank. Betty shot 5 times in the back and died immediately. .22 caliber semi-auto pistol. No indication of robbery or sexual molestation. No witnesses. In Faradays station wagon when they were approuched. Shots fired in the vehicle in an effort to force the pair out of the vehicle. Jensen exited first, and faraday shot when he exited at point blank. Jensen started to run on foot where she was shot and killed. Shocked the community.

  • #7 JULY 5 1969 Darlene shot 5 times. Mike shot 4 times but survived. 9 mm semi-automatic pistol. No witnesses. And no noticeable alternative crime such as robbery or sexual molestation. Ferrin was married and a waitress. Mageau was single and a labourer. Ferrin’s husband was initially a suspect but ruled out due to alibi. Car drove up near to where they were parked. Man with flashlight exited vehicle and approuched them. They initially thought that it was the police. The man fired shots in to the car.Mageau screamed in pain. The man shot twice more at mageau. Mageau said the man was white 5ft8/9, late 20’s to early 30’s, stocky build, round face and brown hair. Suspect Arthur Leigh Allen was identified as the shooter by Mike in 1991 via photo lineup. Asked why he didn’t identify him before, Mike said that it was because nobody ever showed him the picture only if he recognised the name.
  • #8 Cecelia stabbed 10 times- 5 in the front and 5 in the back. Bryan stabbed 6 times in the back but survived. 10-12 inch long blade with wooden handle. No indication of robbery or sexual molestation. Couple = relaxing on a blanket in a very remote lake location. A man approuched them wearing an unusual outfit and holding a gun. Appeared more than 6ft tall with a heavy build. The man claimed he was a prison escapee and needed money and a car to flee to Mexico. Hartnell offered his wallet and car keys but they weren't taken. the man tied the couple with plastic clothesline and began stabbing them. After the assault, the man walked casually away from the scene. After several minutes, a nearby fisherman heard the couple screaming and alerted park rangers. Shepard and Hartnell had managed to free themselves. just over an hour after the attack, the Napa Police Department received a call from a man claiming responsibility for the stabbing. The call was quickly traced to a phone booth in downtown Napa and fingerprints were later recovered.
  • #9 At the crime scene, police found that the attacker had written a message on the victim's car with infamous symbol. Again as an example of prove of identity by police.
  • #11 OCT 11 1969. Cab driver. Shot once in the head at point blank range. 9 mm semi-auto pistol. But not the same used in the ferrin murder. 3 witnesses from a nearby house. Bloody fingerprints were recovered from the vehicle. The three witnesses watched the suspect from approximately 60 feet away as he wiped down the cab with a cloth after killing Stine. They called the police and described a white male, 25 to 30 years old, 5'8" to 5'9", stocky build, reddish-brown hair worn in a crew cut, heavy-rimmed glasses and dark clothing. Unfortunately, the police dispatcher mistakingly described the suspect as being a black male adult. As a result, when patrol officers Donald Fouke and Eric Zelms minutes later observed a white man walking east on Jackson Street, he was never stopped and questioned. The officers did get a good look at him, however. When the correct description of the suspect was finally broadcast, the officers realized they might have encountered him. A search of the area where the man had been observed was conducted, to no avail. The man seen by Fouke and Zelms was very similar to the suspect observed by the three witnesses. He was white, 35 to 45 years old, 5'10", between 180 and 200 pounds, barrel chested, with light-colored, crewcut hair and wearing glasses. The man didn't appear to be carrying anything and no conversation between the man and the officers took place. The Stine murder was initially thought to be a routine cabbie-killing, a robbery gone bad. However, on Oct. 13, 1969, the San Francisco Chronicle received a letter from Zodiac containing a portion of bloody shirt and taking credit for the killing. SFPD Inspectors Dave Toschi and Bill Armstrong, who were assigned the case, were shocked to realize the shirt belonged to Stine. Still later, Zodiac would claim he actually spoke with the patrolmen the night of the murder, leading them astray. The three witnesses, though hampered by poor lighting conditions and fog during their observation of the crime, worked with a police composite artist to put a face on Zodiac. A few days after the sketch was circulated throughout the Bay Area in the form of a wanted poster, the witnesses requested the sketch be altered to make it more accurate. Thus another version was made. More than a month after Stine's murder, Officer Fouke finally came forward about his possible encounter with the killer. Conclusion: In early 2004, the decision was made to close the case, much to the outrage of one recently-retired detective.
  • #12 Stine's wallet and keys were taken and a large portion of his shirt was carefully torn off. Later sent with a letter by the Z.K.
  • #14 The zodiac killer himself claimed up to 37 victims, however it is unknown if these are actual victims of the zodiac killer.
  • #15 There have been many suspects that could potentially be the Zodiac Killer. However, despite this, he is yet to be identified. Ted Bundy was once considered a suspect until fingerprint samples proved otherwise. The following are some of the most notorious suspects.
  • #16 Gaikowski was born in Watertown, S.D. on March 14, 1936. He died of cancer in San Francisco on April 30, 2004. It is known that Gaikowski was trained as a medic in the army. Medics were trained to tear the clothing of a bleeding victim to use as bandages if they did not have access to the proper equipment. Had been previously arrested intentionally for a driving offence as he had the intention of producing a writen piece regarding life in jail. In 1969, 1970 and 1971, Gaikowski was a member of an anti-police, pro-violence counterculture newspaper and commune in San Francisco called Good Times. During this time, Gaikowski was known to smoke pot regularly and to use heavier drugs such as speed and LSD. As early as January 1969, the Good Times newspaper was running violent works of fiction that were nearly a blueprint for Zodiac's future crimes. Carol, Paul Stine's sister, recognized Gaikowski as having attended Paul's funeral. On the very day Zodiac debuted by mailing three "rush to editor" letters to three separate newspapers in the San Francisco area (with each letter containing one third of a code), the Good Times (edited by Gaikowski) just happened to run a cover that was split into thirds. It was the only instance of Zodiac mailing a letter on a Thursday until after the Good Times folded in 1973. Five months later, the Good Times published a three-part code of its own. The Good Times also occasionally ran sensationalistic "Zodiac Killer" headlines that were out of place. Gaikowski had the habit of shortening his last name to four letters and use multiple spellings, such as "Gike" or "Gaik." Interestingly, "GYKE" can clearly be seen in Zodiac's three-part cipher mailed on July 31, 1969. What's more, how Zodiac chose to code the cipher phonetically gives you Gaikowski's full last name. On March 13, 1971 the Zodiac sent a letter to the Los Angeles Times. Coinciding closely with the mailing, Gaikowski was involuntarily committed to the Napa State Hospital after "going berzerk." He was then diagnosed with a mental illness and began treatment at Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco. The Zodiac didn't write again for almost three years. There was not enough probable cause for an arrest or search warrant and the investigation ended.
  • #17  Suspect Arthur Leigh Allen was identified as the shooter by Mike in 1991 via photo lineup. Asked why he didn’t identify him before, Mike said that it was because nobody ever showed him the picture only if he recognised the name. In late-April 1967, three anonymous letters referring to Bates were mailed. In 1970, Sherwood Morrill, head of the Questioned Documents Section of California's Criminal Identification and Investigation Bureau, determined them to be the work of Zodiac. Each contained double the necessary postage, a Zodiac trademark. Two of the three letters were signed with an unusual symbol. Some believe the symbol resembles a sloppy "z," others say it looks like a "32." At the time Bates was killed, Allen was 32 years old, and his permanent residence was 32 Fresno St. in Vallejo, Calif. According to his brother, Ron, Allen was given a Zodiac watch as a Christmas gift from their mother in 1967. (Allen's estimation of when he received the watch was July or August 1969.) The logo for the Zodiac watch is a cross-circle symbol, the same as eventually used by the Zodiac killer. According to police statements, within days of receiving the watch, Allen is alleged to have made these claims to his friend, Don Cheney: (Allen used the premise of writing a novel to communicate this fantasy. Cheney estimates the conversation took place on Jan. 1, 1969.) He would like to kill couples at random. He would taunt the police with letters detailing his crimes. He would sign the letters with the cross-circle symbol from his watch. He would call himself "Zodiac." He would wear make-up to change his appearance. He would attach a flashlight to the barrel of his gun in order to shoot at night. He would fool women into stopping their cars in rural areas by claiming they had problems with their tires, then loosen their lug nuts and eventually take them captive. Don eventually took this information to the police and, in 1972, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) was able to secure a search warrant against Allen as the Zodiac killer. Unfortunately, SFPD elected to search a trailer that Allen frequented in nearby Santa Rosa instead of searching his home at 32 Fresno St. in Vallejo. Nothing incriminating was found. According to a police statement, in an early-1968 conversation with his friend, Philip, Allen is alleged to have been fascinated with the concept of hunting people. According to Allen, people would be more challenging to hunt than animals, since they "have intelligence." Allen was known to use the same unusual spelling and phrasing as Zodiac later used, such as spelling "Mery Xmass" instead of Merry Xmas and saying "trigger mech" instead of trigger mechanism. Allen would intentionally misspell words to be funny. In late-March 1968, Allen was fired from his job as an elementary-school teacher for molesting a student. in 1991, the search warrant executed by VPD revealed Allen owned the same type of ammunition used to kill the victims of Zodiac's Lake Herman Road attack. In 1966-67, Ferrin worked as a waitress at the International House of Pancakes on Tessessee Street in Vallejo, less than 1/10 of a mile from Allen's home at 32 Fresno St. About that time, Allen is alleged to have told Don Cheney that he was fond of a waitress from that restaurant. During a 1971 police interrogation, Allen admitted to having possession of bloody knives the day of the Berryessa attack, claiming he used the knives to "kill a chicken.” Allen's physical appearance and voice were the same as Zodiac's, according to surviving Berryessa victim Bryan Hartnell. Hartnell had been taken to see Allen at his place of employment by a DOJ representative in the mid-1970s. Zodiac left size 10.5 footprints at the crime scene. According to a police report, Allen wore size 10.5. According to a police report, in 1991 Allen's old nemesis Ralph Spinelli came forward to VPD claiming that just prior to the Stine murder, Allen had admitted he was Zodiac and would "prove it by going to San Francisco and killing a cabbie
  • #18 Kaczynski shares certain characteristics with the Zodiac killer: 1) Kaczynski lived in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s. 2) Kaczynski exhibited the ability to construct bombs. 3) Kaczynski communicated with the news media after committing murderous acts. However, Kaczynski could have just been heavily influenced by Zodiac. Additionally, Kaczynski was cleared of any involvement in the Zodiac crimes by both the FBI and the San Francisco Police Department. (Criteria used to eliminate Kaczynski as a Zodiac suspect were fingerprint comparison, handwriting comparison and the placement of Kaczynski away from California on five Zodiac dates of activity.)
  • #20 1969 3 part cipher The Zodiac Killer sent a series of 24 messages to the police and the media which contained letters which confessed to his responsibilities in certain murders and also encoded cryptograms which he ordered to be published on the front pages of newspapers or he would go on to commit more murders. The first and only cryptogram to be solved was this one which was the first one he sent and uncovered this message:
  • #21 Mystery and proof
  • #22 The letter on the left is a supposed plea for help that was sent from the Zodiac and claims he is about to ‘lose control’. The letter on the right is a diagram of a bomb that the Zodiac had claimed to have been planted which targeted school children. The letters that the Zodiac sent were all untraceable and the police could attain any leads no matter how many clues he dropped.
  • #23 Media response and fear
  • #26 The Zodiac was virtually untraceable. He left almost no clues for the police at any of the crime scenes, the odd sample of DNA was analysed and compared to the FBI Criminal Database but there was no luck.
  • #27 Police report
