• In 1492 Ferdinand and Isabella, the Spanish rulers sponsored Christopher
Columbus.
• Ivan the Great was the first to free the Russians from the Mongol grip
• In Rome Alexander VI came to power
3. Turkey to Africa
• In 1492 Turks and other Islamic countries owned south Spain and most of
the northern Africa.
• Almost all of the Eastern Hemisphere were Muslim.
• After Columbus gave the Western Hemisphere to the Spanish, they spread
Christianity in the Americas.
4. South Asia
• With most of the world being Muslim, South Asia was the exception
because most were Buddhists.
• Portuguese and Spanish were fighting for Indonesia for there exotic spices.
5. China and Japan
• Japan remains independent of China.
• Chinese rulers were spending most of their time and money finishing the
Great Wall.
• Chinese merchants were now not aloud to trade outside there walls.
6. The Western Hemisphere
• The Incas and Aztecs expanded from what is now Colombia to Chile in only
30 years.
• Columbus first landed in Mayan territory.
• Even though the Eastern and Western hemispheres had very different
customs, the food was only different by rice, wheat and corn.
7. The Staff of Life
• The three vast land areas depended on a different staple, Western Eurasia
was wheat, Eastern Eurasia was rise, and the Americas were corn.
• After Columbus found the Americas nine tenths of the population died
from disease.
• In 1492 the two different worlds merged together.

8. The Great Traditions
• Four major forms of civilization formed in Eurasia; bureaucratic structures,
writing, significant cities, iron, and high technology.
• Southern Asia and Africa created temple palace complexes.
• Australia and Americas were far behind with primitive hunting.
9. The European Challenge
• With all of the inventions and advances, Europe was pulling ahead of
there rivals.
• In 1326 Europe invented the first gun.
• With Europe improving there shipping they gained an ultimate advantage
over the world.
