The water cycle describes how water is recycled on Earth over long periods of time. It involves four main processes: 1) Evaporation and transpiration which transfers water from oceans, rivers and lakes into the air as vapor, 2) Condensation where water vapor in the air cools and forms clouds, 3) Precipitation where clouds become too heavy and water falls back to Earth as rain, snow or hail, 4) Collection of precipitation into oceans, lakes, rivers or groundwater to be reused through evaporation and transpiration. This cycle has occurred continuously for as long as the Earth has existed.
