WHO ARE THE WALKING
DEAD?
Zombie
is a term used to denote an animated corpse
brought back to life by mystical means such as
witchcraft.
The term is often figuratively applied to describe
a hypnotized person bereft of consciousness
and self-awareness, yet ambulant and able to
respond to surrounding stimuli.
Modern Version
The monsters in modern films are usually
hungry for human flesh (sometimes eating
brains). Sometimes they are victims of a
fictional pandemic (zombie apocalypse) illness
(caused by a virus) causing the dead to
reanimate.
Some Characteristics of Zombies
• They function:
– To satisfy their apatite.
– To make the living like themselves.
• They are insensitive to their surroundings
– Voice of friendship,
– Sound of Music,
– The fragrance of a rose or lily
Fact
• The zombie is a myth, folklore, and for the
most part fiction.
• The zombie apocalypse is also fiction.
The real “walking dead”
But,
• The “walking dead” exist.
• They make up the majority of mankind.
– They attempt to satisfy their fleshly lusts
– They attempt to make the living like themselves
– It’s sometimes hard to tell them apart from the
living
They are all around us
Let’s see what the Bible says about
the “Walking Dead”
We Were the “Walking Dead”
Ephesians 2:1–4 (ESV)
2 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in
which you once walked, following the course of this
world, following the prince of the power of the air,
the spirit that is now at work in the sons of
disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in
the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of
the body and the mind, and were by nature
children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
We come into the world
as “walking dead”
2 And you were dead in
the trespasses and sins
2 in which you once
walked,
The Walking Dead virus
started with Adam.
Romans 5:12 Therefore,
just as sin came into the
world through one man,
and death through sin,
and so death spread to
all men because all
sinned—
Place your
picture here.
Characteristics of the “walking dead”
following the course of
this world, following the
prince of the power of
the air, the spirit that is
now at work in the sons
of disobedience—
• We do as the rest of the
dead do
• We follow the leader of
the dead (prince of the
power of the air)
• We are incapable of
obedience to the truth
because we are sons of
the Father of lies
The “walking dead” follow the flesh
3 among whom we all
once lived in the
passions of our flesh,
carrying out the desires
of the body and the
mind, and were by
nature children of
wrath, like the rest of
mankind.
• We lived after the
passions of the flesh
• Desires of the body and
mind
• We do acts of wrath
and are condemned to
wrath.
• It is the condition of
mankind
BUT WE WERE BROUGHT TO LIFE FROM
THE SPHERE OF THE WALKING DEAD
Ephesians 2:4-7
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the
great love with which he loved us, 5 even when
we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive
together with Christ—by grace you have been
saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated
us with him in the heavenly places in Christ
Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might
show the immeasurable riches of his grace in
kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
God’s love overcomes death
4 But God, being rich in
mercy, because of the
great love with which
he loved us,
• We are brought to life
out of an act of God’s
love
Mercy is shown to the Zombie (walking dead) by
making them truly dead. God’s love and mercy to
the “walking dead” is to make them truly alive.
God Brings Us to Life from the dead
5 even when we were dead in our trespasses,
made us alive together with Christ—by grace
you have been saved—
The gift of God to the “walking dead” is to “live
forever” with Christ.
The condition of the dead
“A corpse is insensible. It sees not, and hears not,
and feels not. The sound of music, and the voice of
friendship and of alarm, do not arouse it. The rose
and the lily breathe forth their fragrance around it,
but the corpse perceives it not. The world is busy
and active around it, but it is unconscious of it all. It
sees no beauty in the landscape; hears not the
voice of a friend; looks not upon the glorious sun
and stars; and is unaffected by the running stream
and the rolling ocean.
Condition of the “walking dead”
So with the sinner in regard to the spiritual and
eternal world. He sees no beauty in religion; he
hears not the call of God; he is unaffected by the
dying love of the Saviour; and he has no interest in
eternal realities. In all these he feels no more
concern, and sees no more beauty, than a dead
man does in the world around him. Such is, in
“fact,” the condition of a sinful world. There is,
indeed, life, and energy, and motion. There are vast
plans and projects, and the world is intensely
active.
But in regard to religion, all is dead. The sinner sees
no beauty there; and no human power can arouse
him to act for God, anymore than human power can
rouse the sleeping dead, or open the sightless
eyeballs on the light of day. The same power is
needed in the conversion of a sinner which is
needed in raising the dead; and one and the other
alike demonstrate the omnipotence of him who can
do it.”
Albert Barnes notes on Ephesians 2:1
God raised us from the dead
6 and (GOD) raised us up with him and seated us
with him in the heavenly places in Christ
Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might
show the immeasurable riches of his grace in
kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Baptism a picture of the “walking
dead” coming to life
Colossians 2:11–14 12 having been buried with him
in baptism, in which you were also raised with him
through faith in the powerful working of God, who
raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were
dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of
your flesh, God made alive together with him,
having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling
the record of debt that stood against us with its
legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the
cross.
There will be no Zombie
Apocalypse, but ….
There Will be an apocalypse
The “walking dead” will rise up against the
“living”. But, they that are alive in Christ will live
forever while the “walking dead” will be judged
with a second death.
Without the Son,
we are the “Walking Dead”
John 5:21–25
21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so
also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 The Father
judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,
23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the
Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor
the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you,
whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me
has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has
passed from death to life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an
hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear
the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
