Have you ever been to a Parade?
Have you ever been to a Military
Parade?
What is a Triumphal
Entry?
• A demonstration of military power to it’s
nation
• Is it the victor showing power over the
conquered?
• Is it the victor’s celebration when coming
home?
Hitler’s Triumph

Rome: a Triumphal Entry professed

Rome: a Triumphal Entry professed
victory over an enemy
Qualifications for a Triumphal Entry in Rome
– Win a significant victory over a foreign enemy,
killing at least 5,000 enemy troops, and earn the title
imperator (originally commander, later emperor).
– Be an elected magistrate with the power of
imperium, i.e. a dictator, consul, or a praetor.
– Bring the army home, signifying that the war was
over and that the army was no longer needed. This
only applied with a citizen army. By the imperial
period the proper triumph was reserved for the
emperor and his family. If a general was awarded a
triumph by the emperor, he would march with a
token number of his troops.
Rome: a Triumphal Entry professed
victory over an enemy
The Triumphal Progression
– The Senate, headed by the magistrates
without their bodyguards.
– Trumpeters
– Carts with the spoils of war to demonstrate
the concrete benefits of the victory
– White bulls for sacrifice
– The arms and insignia of the leaders of the
conquered enemy
– The enemy leaders themselves, with their
relatives and other captives
Rome: a Triumphal Entry professed
victory over an enemy
The Triumphal Progression
– The bodyguards of the imperator (Emperor)
– The Emperor himself, in a chariot drawn by
two (later four) horses
– The adult sons and officers of the imperator
– The army without weapons or armor, but
clad in togas and wearing wreaths. During
the later periods, only a selected company
of soldiers would follow the commander in
the triumph.
How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant?
How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant?
John 12:9-19 (NET) Now a large crowd of
Judeans learned that Jesus was there,
and so they came not only because of him
but also to see Lazarus whom he had
raised from the dead. So the chief priests
planned to kill Lazarus too, for on account
of him many of the Jewish people from
Jerusalem were going away and believing
in Jesus.
How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant?
The next day the large crowd that had come to the
feast heard that Jesus was coming to
Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees
and went out to meet him. They began to shout,
“Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in
the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of
Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on
it, just as it is written, “Do not be afraid, people
of Zion; look, your king is coming, seated on
a donkey’s colt!”
How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant?
(His disciples did not understand these
things when they first happened, but when
Jesus was glorified, then they
remembered that these things were
written about him and that these things
had happened to him.) So the crowd who
had been with him when he called Lazarus
out of the tomb and raised him from the
dead were continuing to testify about it.
How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant?
Because they had heard that Jesus had
performed this miraculous sign, the crowd
went out to meet him. Thus the Pharisees
said to one another, “You see that you can
do nothing. Look, the world has run off
after him!”
How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant?
Jesus’ entry is not:
A military parade to exhibit
his might to the people
A military parade to show
off his strength to the
conquered
A military parade to
celebrate victory over
enemies Instead of two to four white
horses he rides in on a donkey. He has never been in a
foreign CountryHe never lifted a weapon
against an enemy
The Final Proclamation that Jesus
is Messiah
His signs proved he was Messiah (The
Anointed One).

His entry fulfills Prophecy
John 12:12,13 The next day the large crowd that had come to the
feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they
took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. They
began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in
the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!”
Is a declaration from Psalm 118:25-26 (A Messianic Psalm)
Please Lord, deliver! Please Lord, grant us success! May
the one who comes in the name of the Lord be blessed!
We will pronounce blessings on you in the Lord’s temple.
Psalm 118:25-26 (NET)
The Final Proclamation that Jesus
is Messiah
His entry fulfills Prophecy
John 12:14-16 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is
written, “Do not be afraid, people of Zion; look, your king is
coming, seated on a donkey’s colt!” (His disciples did not
understand these things when they first happened, but when Jesus
was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written
about him and that these things had happened to him.)
A fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9
Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Look!
Your king is coming to you: he is legitimate and victorious, humble
and riding on a donkey – on a young donkey, the foal of a female
donkey. Zechariah 9:9 (NET)
The Final Proclamation that Jesus
is Messiah
He Fulfils Daniel 9:25-26
So know and understand: From the issuing of the
command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until an
anointed one, a prince arrives, there will be a period of
seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will again be built,
with plaza and moat, but in distressful times. Now after
the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one will be cut off and
have nothing. As for the city and the sanctuary, the
people of the coming prince will destroy them. But his
end will come speedily like a flood. Until the end of the
war that has been decreed there will be destruction.
Daniel 9:25-26 (NET)
The Final Proclamation that Jesus
is Messiah
He Fulfils Daniel 9:25-26
Dr. Harold W. Horner a former professor of Dallas Theological
Seminary calculated regarding the date of the Issuing of the decree
by King Artaxerxes in Nehemiah 2 to the date of the Triumphal Entry
of Jesus: “Daniel inquired about the termination of the seventy-year
captivity. Gabriel said that Israel would not come to its messianic
rest until seventy weeks were completed. It was concluded that the
seventy weeks (each week is 70 years) refer to 490 years, which
are to be calculated according to the prophetic year of 360 days.
The terminus a quo (beginning point) of this seventy-week period
was reckoned as being March 4 or 5 (more probably the latter). It
was decided that there is a gap between the sixty-ninth and the
seventieth week. The terminus ad quem (a goal or finishing point)
of the sixty-ninth week was on the day of Christ's triumphal entry on
March 30, A.D. 33.)
The Final Proclamation that Jesus
is Messiah
He Fulfils Daniel 9:25-26
Dr. Horner concludes: As predicted in Zechariah 9:9, Christ
presented Himself to Israel as Messiah the king for the last
time and the multitude of the disciples shouted loudly by
quoting from a messianic psalm: "Blessed is the king who
comes in the name of the Lord" (Ps. 118:26; Matt. 21:9; Mark
II: 10; Luke 19:38; John 12:13). This occurred on Monday,
Nisan 10 (March 30) and only four days later on Friday, Nisan
14, April 3, A.D. 33 Jesus was cut off or crucified.
The seventieth week of Daniel's prophecy is yet to be fulfilled.
When that is accomplished, Daniel's inquiry will be fully
realized for Israel will be back in her homeland with her
Messiah.”
Israel Rejected their Messiah
Luke says, in connection with this event:
Now when Jesus approached and saw the city, he wept
over it, saying, “If you had only known on this day, even
you, the things that make for peace! But now they are
hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you
when your enemies will build an embankment against
you and surround you and close in on you from every
side. They will demolish you – you and your children
within your walls – and they will not leave within you one
stone on top of another, because you did not recognize
the time of your visitation from God.” Luke 19:41-44
(NET)
Israel Rejected their Messiah
In 70 A.D. Rome built a surge against
Jerusalem and scattered the Hebrews
throughout the world.

the siege of

Engraving on Titus Triumphant Arch
Israel wanted a Messiah:
That would save them from Rome.
But he offered them salvation from sin.
That would judge the nations.
But their rejection offered salvation to the
nations.
That would yield a sword (military Messiah)
But he came to receive nails in his hands and a
spear in His side (suffering Messiah)
Jesus will have his Triumphant
Entry
Then I saw heaven opened and here came a white horse! The
one riding it was called “Faithful” and “True,” and with justice
he judges and goes to war. His eyes are like a fiery flame and
there are many diadem crowns on his head. He has a name
written that no one knows except himself. He is dressed in
clothing dipped in blood, and he is called the Word of God.
The armies that are in heaven, dressed in white, clean, fine
linen, were following him on white horses. From his mouth
extends a sharp sword, so that with it he can strike the
nations. He will rule them with an iron rod, and he stomps
the winepress of the furious wrath of God, the All-Powerful. 16
He has a name written on his clothing and on his thigh: “King
of kings and Lord of lords.” Revelation 19:11-16 (NET)

The Truiumphal Entry - John 2:9-19

  • 2. Have you ever been to a Parade?
  • 3. Have you ever been to a Military Parade?
  • 4. What is a Triumphal Entry? • A demonstration of military power to it’s nation • Is it the victor showing power over the conquered? • Is it the victor’s celebration when coming home? Hitler’s Triumph of Vienna North Korea
  • 5. Rome: a Triumphal Entry professed victory over an enemy
  • 6. Rome: a Triumphal Entry professed victory over an enemy Qualifications for a Triumphal Entry in Rome – Win a significant victory over a foreign enemy, killing at least 5,000 enemy troops, and earn the title imperator (originally commander, later emperor). – Be an elected magistrate with the power of imperium, i.e. a dictator, consul, or a praetor. – Bring the army home, signifying that the war was over and that the army was no longer needed. This only applied with a citizen army. By the imperial period the proper triumph was reserved for the emperor and his family. If a general was awarded a triumph by the emperor, he would march with a token number of his troops.
  • 7. Rome: a Triumphal Entry professed victory over an enemy The Triumphal Progression – The Senate, headed by the magistrates without their bodyguards. – Trumpeters – Carts with the spoils of war to demonstrate the concrete benefits of the victory – White bulls for sacrifice – The arms and insignia of the leaders of the conquered enemy – The enemy leaders themselves, with their relatives and other captives
  • 8. Rome: a Triumphal Entry professed victory over an enemy The Triumphal Progression – The bodyguards of the imperator (Emperor) – The Emperor himself, in a chariot drawn by two (later four) horses – The adult sons and officers of the imperator – The army without weapons or armor, but clad in togas and wearing wreaths. During the later periods, only a selected company of soldiers would follow the commander in the triumph.
  • 9. How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant?
  • 10. How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant? John 12:9-19 (NET) Now a large crowd of Judeans learned that Jesus was there, and so they came not only because of him but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too, for on account of him many of the Jewish people from Jerusalem were going away and believing in Jesus.
  • 11. How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant? The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. They began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, “Do not be afraid, people of Zion; look, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt!”
  • 12. How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant? (His disciples did not understand these things when they first happened, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that these things had happened to him.) So the crowd who had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead were continuing to testify about it.
  • 13. How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant? Because they had heard that Jesus had performed this miraculous sign, the crowd went out to meet him. Thus the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you can do nothing. Look, the world has run off after him!”
  • 14. How is Jesus’ entry Triumphant? Jesus’ entry is not: A military parade to exhibit his might to the people A military parade to show off his strength to the conquered A military parade to celebrate victory over enemies Instead of two to four white horses he rides in on a donkey. He has never been in a foreign CountryHe never lifted a weapon against an enemy
  • 15. The Final Proclamation that Jesus is Messiah His signs proved he was Messiah (The Anointed One). John 12:9-11 Now a large crowd of Judeans learned that Jesus was there, and so they came not only because of him but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too, for on account of him many of the Jewish people from Jerusalem were going away and believing in Jesus.

  • 18. The Final Proclamation that Jesus is Messiah His entry fulfills Prophecy John 12:12,13 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. They began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!” Is a declaration from Psalm 118:25-26 (A Messianic Psalm) Please Lord, deliver! Please Lord, grant us success! May the one who comes in the name of the Lord be blessed! We will pronounce blessings on you in the Lord’s temple. Psalm 118:25-26 (NET)
  • 19. The Final Proclamation that Jesus is Messiah His entry fulfills Prophecy John 12:14-16 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, “Do not be afraid, people of Zion; look, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt!” (His disciples did not understand these things when they first happened, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that these things had happened to him.) A fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Look! Your king is coming to you: he is legitimate and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey – on a young donkey, the foal of a female donkey. Zechariah 9:9 (NET)
  • 20. The Final Proclamation that Jesus is Messiah He Fulfils Daniel 9:25-26 So know and understand: From the issuing of the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until an anointed one, a prince arrives, there will be a period of seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will again be built, with plaza and moat, but in distressful times. Now after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one will be cut off and have nothing. As for the city and the sanctuary, the people of the coming prince will destroy them. But his end will come speedily like a flood. Until the end of the war that has been decreed there will be destruction. Daniel 9:25-26 (NET)
  • 21. The Final Proclamation that Jesus is Messiah He Fulfils Daniel 9:25-26 Dr. Harold W. Horner a former professor of Dallas Theological Seminary calculated regarding the date of the Issuing of the decree by King Artaxerxes in Nehemiah 2 to the date of the Triumphal Entry of Jesus: “Daniel inquired about the termination of the seventy-year captivity. Gabriel said that Israel would not come to its messianic rest until seventy weeks were completed. It was concluded that the seventy weeks (each week is 70 years) refer to 490 years, which are to be calculated according to the prophetic year of 360 days. The terminus a quo (beginning point) of this seventy-week period was reckoned as being March 4 or 5 (more probably the latter). It was decided that there is a gap between the sixty-ninth and the seventieth week. The terminus ad quem (a goal or finishing point) of the sixty-ninth week was on the day of Christ's triumphal entry on March 30, A.D. 33.)
  • 22. The Final Proclamation that Jesus is Messiah He Fulfils Daniel 9:25-26 Dr. Horner concludes: As predicted in Zechariah 9:9, Christ presented Himself to Israel as Messiah the king for the last time and the multitude of the disciples shouted loudly by quoting from a messianic psalm: "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord" (Ps. 118:26; Matt. 21:9; Mark II: 10; Luke 19:38; John 12:13). This occurred on Monday, Nisan 10 (March 30) and only four days later on Friday, Nisan 14, April 3, A.D. 33 Jesus was cut off or crucified. The seventieth week of Daniel's prophecy is yet to be fulfilled. When that is accomplished, Daniel's inquiry will be fully realized for Israel will be back in her homeland with her Messiah.”
  • 23. Israel Rejected their Messiah Luke says, in connection with this event: Now when Jesus approached and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “If you had only known on this day, even you, the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and surround you and close in on you from every side. They will demolish you – you and your children within your walls – and they will not leave within you one stone on top of another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.” Luke 19:41-44 (NET)
  • 24. Israel Rejected their Messiah In 70 A.D. Rome built a surge against Jerusalem and scattered the Hebrews throughout the world.
  • 25. Rome celebrated with a Triumphant Entry Titus Triumphant Arch was built in 71 A.D. to commemorate the siege of Jerusalem.
  • 26. Rome celebrated with a Triumphant Entry Engraving on Titus Triumphant Arch
  • 27. Israel wanted a Messiah: That would save them from Rome. But he offered them salvation from sin. That would judge the nations. But their rejection offered salvation to the nations. That would yield a sword (military Messiah) But he came to receive nails in his hands and a spear in His side (suffering Messiah)
  • 28. Jesus will have his Triumphant Entry Then I saw heaven opened and here came a white horse! The one riding it was called “Faithful” and “True,” and with justice he judges and goes to war. His eyes are like a fiery flame and there are many diadem crowns on his head. He has a name written that no one knows except himself. He is dressed in clothing dipped in blood, and he is called the Word of God. The armies that are in heaven, dressed in white, clean, fine linen, were following him on white horses. From his mouth extends a sharp sword, so that with it he can strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod, and he stomps the winepress of the furious wrath of God, the All-Powerful. 16 He has a name written on his clothing and on his thigh: “King of kings and Lord of lords.” Revelation 19:11-16 (NET) There will be no Donkeys next time.
