The talk will review the many services needed in today's grid, and those that will be more important in the future. It will also review recent competitive equilibrium theory for the highly dynamic markets that may emerge in tomorrow's grid. In particular, to combat volatility from increasing penetration of renewable energy resources, there will be greater need for regulation services at various time-scales. There is enormous potential to secure these ancillary services via demand response. However, there is an obsession today with the promotion of real time prices to incentivize demand response. All evidence strongly suggests that this is a bad idea: 1) In 2011, massive price swings in the real-time market generated anger in Texas and New Zealand 2) Our own research shows that this is to be expected: in a completive equilibrium real-time prices will reach the choke up price (which was recently estimated at 1/4 million dollars). With transmission constraints, our research concludes that prices can go much higher. 3) A recent EIA study shows that consumers are scared of smart meters - they do not trust utility companies to experiment with their meters, or their power bills. We must then ask, is there any motivation to focus on markets in a real-time setting? The speaker believes there is none. Explanations will be given, and alternative visions will be proposed.
Home Area Networks: A Preferred Choice for Energy EfficiencyCognizant
The day is here when home area networks (HANs) contribute to energy efficiency for utilities and home users; the way forward will be driven by automated demand response (ADR), automated demand side management (DSM), dynamic pricing, and electric vehicle (EV) charging among other key factors.
To deliver power more responsibly and more efficiently, energy and utilities organizations are working toward a smarter energy value chain: (1) Transformation of the grid, (2) Empowerment of consumers, (3) Ensuring cleaner energy supply.

This paper provides an analysis of factors which lead to poor service delivery and poor financial outcomes for the telecommunication industry in India in recent times. Once hailed as the star performer, the sector has been the focus of public debates for all the wrong reasons, starting with the 2G spectrum scam. While opportunistic behaviour (with no investment in infrastructure) by service providers has been cited as one of the reasons for the drop-in service quality, that alone does not provide a complete answer to this question. We find that lack of adequate spectrum infrastructure compensated only partially by investments in network infrastructure explains to a large extent the debacle. Going forward, the government has to revisit its spectrum policy with a goal to long term gains rather than short term revenue maximization to improve outcomes. In particular, economic theory suggests spectrum auctions should be viewed as common value auctions, where the reserve price should be kept as low as possible. This is a principle that consecutive auctions in India have flouted in the last few years.
The document discusses trends in the U.S. energy industry, including growth in renewable energy sources and the transition to a smarter electric grid. Key points include:
- Renewable energy such as solar and wind are gaining market share in the U.S. and investments in renewables are expected to reach $700 billion over the next two decades.
- The smart grid subsector is modernizing distribution and transmission systems through technologies like smart meters and is projected to provide $130 billion in annual benefits to the U.S. economy by 2019.
- Digital technologies are both enabling intelligent grids but also introducing new cybersecurity threats that must be addressed.

Lightning Talk #9: How UX and Data Storytelling Can Shape Policy by Mika Aldabaux singapore
How can we take UX and Data Storytelling out of the tech context and use them to change the way government behaves?
Showcasing the truth is the highest goal of data storytelling. Because the design of a chart can affect the interpretation of data in a major way, one must wield visual tools with care and deliberation. Using quantitative facts to evoke an emotional response is best achieved with the combination of UX and data storytelling.
It’s no wonder that smart meter rollouts have skyrocketed with supporting business case findings such as ComEd customers saving potentially $2.8 billion on their electric bills over the 20-year life of the smart meters. Largely due to the aggressive U.S. effort to modernize its electric grid pros and cons (for example PG&E will now offer ‘opt out option’) for smart meters are still aggressively being debated; nonetheless the number of smart meters installed in the U.S. has ballooned over the past several years – with just over fifty utilities deploying the bulk of the investment. Zpryme analyzed data from the EIA in an effort to not only breakdown smart meter deployments by utility but also to zero in on the drivers that will bridge the U.S. energy divide.
