This study estimated the economic benefits of public and charitable funding for cancer research in the UK between 1970-2009. It found that this investment of £15 billion produced health benefits valued at £124 billion for UK patients from 1991-2010 through reduced cancer incidence, early detection from screening, and improved survival. Accounting for the average 15 year time lag between investment and health impacts, as well as the proportion of research attributable to the UK, the study estimates cancer research has generated a 10% rate of return. Managing National Health: An Overview of Metrics & Options
This is a presentation that I gave at the annual international healthcare conference hosted by the Cayman Islands government. It summarizes the international standards and frameworks for planning and managing the health of a nation. One of the most fun parts of a very fun career was the time that I spent working and living in the Cayman Islands and serving as the CIO of the national health system. The Cayman Islands national health system sat at the intersection of three very influential healthcare ecosystems-- the United States, United Kingdom, and the Pan-American Healthcare Organization. As a result, I was fortunate enough to learn from these international settings and contrast that to the US healthcare system. Other healthcare systems tend to benchmark themselves internationally more so than the United States, where we tend to benchmark ourselves internally. Unfortunately, those internal US benchmarks are the lowest in the developed world by almost every measure of national health.

NICE Decision Outcomes Under the Proposed Valued Based Assessment
This timely presentation addresses the changes that are proposed under NICE's new value-based assessment (VBA) approach to assessing health technologies. It reviews NICE's current approach and decisions to date for all technologies and separately for orphan and cancer drugs. VBA's proposed calculations for burden of illness and societal impact use estimates of 'shortfall' are illustrated in the presentation. Also discussed are changes in QALY thresholds.
