Television is a medium for transmitting moving images and sound through telecommunication technologies. It originated from experiments combining optical, mechanical, and electronic technologies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Early mechanical fax machines in the late 19th century transmitted the first electrically transmitted images. The concept of scanning images for transmission was developed in 1881 and has been used in nearly all image transmission technologies since. Television programming is produced and then distributed through original broadcast runs on networks or stations or later syndication to other markets and stations. Television worldwide is financed through various means including government, advertising, licensing fees, subscriptions or combinations of these.
