was the primary promoter of women's right to vote.
• The NAWSA pushed for a constitutional amendment guaranteeing women's voting rights, and

Constitution in 1920.

movement, Mrs. Emmeline Pankhurst is
arrested by Superintendant Rolfe outside
Buckingham Palace, London while trying
to present a petition to HM King George
V in May 1914.
In 1910, Pankhurst led a march on
Parliament of more than 300 women.
They were met with an aggressive and
violent police response - ordered by
then-home secretary Winston Churchill -
in which officers punched protesters and
"pulled on women's breasts"

Amendment
• On August 18, 1920, the
Tennessee legislature narrowly
approved the 19th Amendment.
On August 31, the Tennessee
House of Representatives voted
to rescind their previous vote,
but the U.S. Secretary of State
had already proclaimed the
amendment ratified on August
26.
• Women’s right to vote was
achieved through the national
and local efforts of both the
NAWSA and the NWP.
