During World War 1, women faced increased sexual and labor violence. They were at risk of rape by combatants or forced into prostitution and slavery. While munitions work offered women long hours and dangerous conditions, it provided stable pay. Some women took on demanding jobs in metal forging previously reserved for men. Despite the difficulties, propaganda also portrayed women's expanded roles in nurturing jobs like nursing.
