The Gospel & The Four Gospels
The First Words of Jesus
The Introduction of the Gospel According to Mark
Mark 8-9
Preparation to Discussing Mark
1. What is your Worldview?
• Put on Your Gospel glasses
• Gospel 1: Our Triune God Reigns: All Authority
• Gospel 2: We are created to Rule: Delegated
Authority
2. Take in the whole landscape of Mark.
• Think 2nd Reading of Scripture
Mark 1
1The beginning of the good news [Gospel] about Jesus
the Messiah, the Son of God,
• Baptism (His Coronation 1:9-11)
• Temptation in Wilderness (His first act as King
1:12-13)
Mark 1
14After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee,
proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he
said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the
good news!”
• First Disciples Calling… “Come, follow me.” (1:16-20)
• First Miracle…exorcism and recognized authority (1:21-28)
• First Command to silence…(1:34 also 3:12, 5:43, 7;36, 8:30)
Mark 3
Appointing of the 12 –
“13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him
those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed
twelve that they might be with him and that he might
send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive
out demons.” (3:13-15)
Mark 3
Jesus – The Disappointing Son (3:20-21)
20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd
gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to
eat. 21 When his family heard about this, they went to take
charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”
Mark 3
Jesus redefines “My Family.” (3:31-35)
31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside,
they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around
him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside
looking for you.”
33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.
34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and
said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!35 Whoever does
God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
Mark 4
Jesus as Teacher of parables.
10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him
asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of
the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the
outside everything is said in parables 12 so that,
“they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!”
Secret of the Kingdom:
“Listen…you that have ears to hear, let them hear”
Mark 4
Jesus as Interpreter of parables.
13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this
parable? How then will you understand any
parable?14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are
like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon
as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word
that was sown in them.
Mark 6
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to
village. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send
them out two by two and gave them authority over
impure spirits.
12 They went out and preached that people should
repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed
many sick people with oil and healed them.
Mark 6
35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to
him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already
very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the
surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves
something to eat.”
37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”
They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s
wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it
to them to eat?”
38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”
When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”
Mark 6
39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit
down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in
groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves
and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks
and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his
disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided
the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were
satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls
of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the
men who had eaten was five thousand.
Mark 8
During those days another large crowd gathered. Since
they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him
and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people; they
have already been with me three days and have nothing to
eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on
the way, because some of them have come a long
distance.”
4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote
place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied.
Mark 8
6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he
had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke
them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to
the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as
well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples
to distribute them.
8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples
picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left
over. 9 About four thousand were present.
Mark 8
27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around
Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do
people say I am?”
28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say
Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I
am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
Mark 8
He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must
suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief
priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be
killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke
plainly about this, and
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he
rebuked Peter.
“Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in
mind the concerns of God, but merely human
Mark 8
34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and
said:
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and
take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save
their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and
for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to
gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can
anyone give in exchange for their soul?
38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this
adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be
ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the
Mark 9
2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and
led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There
he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became
dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach
them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who
were talking with Jesus.
5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us
put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for
Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so
frightened.)
7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came
Mark 9
14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd
around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As
soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with
wonder and ran to greet him.
16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.
17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my
son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of
speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He
foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked
your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”
Mark 9
19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long
shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you?
Bring the boy to me.”
20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately
threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled
around, foaming at the mouth.
21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”
“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into
fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity
on us and help us.”
23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who
Mark 9
24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help
me overcome my unbelief!”
25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he
rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I
command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The
boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s
dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his
feet, and he stood up.
Mark 9
28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked
him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by
prayer.”
“The will of God is not something you add to
your life.
It’s a course you choose.
You either line yourself up with the Son of God or
you capitulate to the principle which governs the
rest of the world.”
- Elizabeth Elliott
Romans 6
1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so
that grace may increase? 2 By no means!
We are those who have died to sin; how can we live
in it any longer?3 Or don’t you know that all of us
who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
into his death?
4 We were therefore buried with him through
baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was
raised from the dead through the glory of the
Father, we too may live a new life.
Romans 6
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his,
we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection
like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with
him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away
with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because
anyone who has died has been set free from sin.
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also
live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised
from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has
mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to
sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
Romans 6
11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive
to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin
reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil
desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an
instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to
God as those who have been brought from death to life;
and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of
righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your
master, because you are not under the law, but under
grace.

  • 4. Mark 1 14After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” • First Disciples Calling… “Come, follow me.” (1:16-20) • First Miracle…exorcism and recognized authority (1:21-28) • First Command to silence…(1:34 also 3:12, 5:43, 7;36, 8:30)
  • 5. Mark 3 Appointing of the 12 – “13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons.” (3:13-15)
  • 6. Mark 3 Jesus – The Disappointing Son (3:20-21) 20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”
  • 7. Mark 3 Jesus redefines “My Family.” (3:31-35) 31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” 33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. 34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
  • 8. Mark 4 Jesus as Teacher of parables. 10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12 so that, “they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!” Secret of the Kingdom: “Listen…you that have ears to hear, let them hear”
  • 9. Mark 4 Jesus as Interpreter of parables. 13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable?14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.
  • 10. Mark 6 Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. 12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
  • 11. Mark 6 35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?” 38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”
  • 12. Mark 6 39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
  • 13. Mark 8 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.” 4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?” 5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied.
  • 14. Mark 8 6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 9 About four thousand were present.
  • 15. Mark 8 27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” 28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” 29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” 30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
  • 16. Mark 8 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human
  • 17. Mark 8 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the
  • 18. Mark 9 2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) 7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came
  • 19. Mark 9 14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. 16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked. 17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”
  • 20. Mark 9 19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.” 20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” 23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who
  • 21. Mark 9 24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” 25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.
  • 22. Mark 9 28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” 29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”
  • 23. “The will of God is not something you add to your life. It’s a course you choose. You either line yourself up with the Son of God or you capitulate to the principle which governs the rest of the world.” - Elizabeth Elliott
  • 24. Romans 6 1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
  • 25. Romans 6 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
  • 26. Romans 6 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
