The Solar System formed 4.6 billion years ago with the Sun at its center and eight planets in orbit - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The Sun is a large ball of hot gas that all planets revolve around. Earth is unique in that it has liquid water and conditions suitable for life, while other planets like Mercury are small and rocky or gas giants like Jupiter are cold and made of gases without a surface.
