The document discusses how Generation Y, those born after 1980, have introduced a social (r)evolution through their use and adoption of technology from a young age. Key aspects of Gen Y include growing up with mobile devices and always having information at their fingertips, which allows them to explore and learn quickly. The workplace is being transformed as Gen Y enters, with trends toward more collaboration, flat organizations, and social/mobile technologies in the workplace. By 2025, it is estimated that 3 out of 4 workers will be from generations that demand these new ways of working.
The social (r)evolution introduced by Generation y - Alexander VanwynsbergheInspireX
Gen Y makes up 25% of the workforce today, and their numbers are growing rapidly. These new entrants into the workforce expect even more from their work experience than their Gen X and Baby Boomer counterparts, making it really important that businesses understand the unique characteristics of this group. What technologies do they consider essential? What’s the impact of their social behavior? Are they really that social as everyone says? What about the social media trends, do we need to embrace them in the enterprise?

Thanks for joining this session.Let me introduce you into the world of generation Y, it will be a session based on my opinions and some personal experiences. So, off we go!
1st: What it this gen y? How can you ‘define’ this generation?2nd: What’s the influence of that social generation Y into the workplace3rd: How can the ‘nexus of forces’ help to empower this generation4rd: Some takaways for you
Let me start with a brief overview of the generations.. It’s an interesting starting point for this talk.
This is Michael Eisner.. Disney 1984, put Disney back on the rails.. This generation is also known as the Silent Generation.(They have some characteristics like: Command-and-control leadership, rules, hierarchicalorganizationalstructuresThey are really the leaders of some of the most established and influential companies.)
You all know this guy right?Bill gates, the MS guy.Comparing to the “older” generation, that was the first generation that was forced into higher education.. After that, go for carrier(. Their characteristics: Goal-orientedPositive attitude)
Larry page – the co-founder of google. Generation X, well, they felt the future had been given to their parents and found the future disappointing and unappealing. (Somecharacterics about them are: Balance between work and life—work to live not live to work Flexible work hours/job sharing appealingComfortable with authority but not impressed with titles)
Also called “millennials” Mark ZuckerbergThefacebook at Harvard at 2004He was really young, but had a clear vision!1,23 billion users
That were the 4 generations – traditionalists – baby boomers – x – y .. But what is generation Y, because that’s what this talk is about, no? Let me explain how I think you can “define” that generation
We spentourteenage life in the 90’s.. And that we really a revolutionairy decade. That had a big impact on us
Grew up in the age of tech.. For example one of my top movies was The Matrix … a 1999 science fiction action film written and directed by The Wachowski Brothers, starring Keanu Reeves. That was really an awesome movie!
Story: When I was 10 (1995), we got our first computer.. A Pentium 1, 120 Mhz. And that’s also the point that my digital life started. And my dad wasn’t really happy about that.. Wait until 7PM, that was cheaper..
From that moment on.. We were online.. No matter what, no matter when. Even till today.. I can’t imaging to be offline…FOMO .. Fear of missing out
I had my first cellphone when I was about 14 year (It was a coca-cola “mobile” from Saghem, which I actually lost after 2 months). Then I got a Nokia 3310. This was really a non-breakable thing.. Got it for about 5 years. Imagine that you have a 5 year old smartphone now.. How would that be like?
When we are in the need of information, we take our phone.. And start searching on the internet.. Wherever we are, whenever we want.. We have this massive bunch of data at our disposal.
If we want to travel.. We go to booking.com, put a reservation on for an awesome hotel, and off we go! Once we’re there, we just take our smartphone and start exploring.. We don’t use paper maps, We use foursquare, find interesting spots, and off we go..
Another thing that’s typical for gen Y is the fact that they always need to know the why? Because we have all information at our fingertips, we can find whatever information that we want.. A typical syndrome is “LMGTFY”: Let me Google that for you
We are teamplayers..We love working together! As in our private life, we love to hang around with people, friends.. We love to make new friends.. When at work, we also like being part of a team. Having a goal, a mission.. Achieve something, not individually, but in team!
You can wonder, is that really “the” definition? Of course not, it’s just a global statement. Of course.. We all have our strengths.. What’s in a name..
Generational differences are by definition, big picture. We’re talking about differences among groups of people that number in the tens of millions. But those two managers in conflict in your company are simply two individuals. As individuals, one or both of them might be completely opposite from their generational stereotype.
Now you know what Gen Y is and what they stand for.. Let’s talk about the “social” evolution I went through. It’s a personal journey trough my digital life
While we grew up, lots of interesting things happened.. The start of the “internet” as we know it, the whole internet becoming accessible, becoming social,..
Let’s go back in time, and take a look of how the “social internet” evolved, and what habits I learned and how I encountered this evolution.
My first “web experience”. I was 11 years old, and I started my first “Geocities” website. You had to option to apply themes, you had to option to “link” websites so you could really browse trough various websites. Animated gifs. This was awesome! In 2009, the service stopped
My first ”chat” experience. offline user messaging, multi-user chats, file tranfsers which were ”resumable” (awesome in that time, as 56K was like HELL). It was great, allthough you were continuously spammed by some russian .. Let’s call them.. LADIES
I started using google. I was really obsessed about “superbikes” (who knows that?) So I was looking for all information on the internet about that. And google was my hero.. Really! (first there was altavista – and also astalavista, lol .. But then I used google). I even printed all information and put in a giant box.. My dad wasn’t happy about that (inkt is expensive!)
It feels like I’ve spent like whole my life on using MSN. Chatting into the late nights, adding some fancy usernames with hearts, stars, even with ”which song I’m currently listening to with Winamp”. Don’t even get me started about MSN Plus, with the ”buzzer” feature to shake the screen of the user you’re chatting with. Or even the ”bomber”, to spam like hell.. The good times
Wikipedia, my hero! I was like 16 then.. At school, we got some “research” projects, and I needed to find some information about the “electrical bike” (I was studying Elektro-mechanics). And Wikipedia actually gave me lots of usefull information (which I basically just copied/pasted.. Without checking the resource.. But hey, I had lots of great information, and the teachers didn’t know Wikipedia yet.. So ).. But for now, check your resources!
That was my first “social profile”.. Look at the username, it was just horrible. There’s also my ICQ number.. But hey, I’ve met my girlfriend overthere! And now we are like more than 11 years a couple. So the internet found my love (well, I did actually, but the internet helped me). So never say, internet dating doesn’t work.. It does! Look’n meet.. You had redbox, netlog, ..One tip: http://web.archive.org/
My first bachelor year at Oostende, they introduced “blackboard”. An online system where could really collaborate with the teacher, with students, about documents, about exam questions (and answers )Evolved to Toledo.
2005: look, the superbike thing
In 2007 I also started with facebook.. Formally “the facebook”
From 2005 up until now It went really fast.. Going from myspace –facebook.. Up until now..
If you look at today.. You have twitter, facebook, foursquare, pinterest, … And there are more and more each day
You have whatapp..Aqcuired by Facebook.. You have Tinders (anyone who knows what tinders is? No? Any singles in the room?) (uitleggen) … Snapschat (private messaging)5
What about the next generation? It’s even worse! they are given birth with a tablet in their hand. They are raised with this technology.I once saw a little youtube movie about a baby who was playing angrybirds like a pro.. The kid was barely 1 year old.
So .. What if you bring us (and the next generation) to the workplace? Well, you kind of get a “revolution”
Let me give you some stats. As of today They are now 25% already
.. In 2025, they’ll make up three out of every four workers worldwide. So Gen Y is making its entrance. That will give some clashes!
Each generation brings their own set of attitudes and behaviors. There will be complains about micromanaging by x-ers, no interaction with higher levels, … Boomers grumbling about these new employees not being “team players. Millennials expecting more interaction with higher levels of the hierarchy
People can learn from each other.. Gen y’ers will get new insights,
We, as generation Y, don’t like hierarchy,
we want to work in a horizontal organization, an organization that few or no levels of middle management between staff and executives. The idea is that we will be more productive when weare more directly involved in the decision making process, rather than closely supervised by many layers of management.
There’s also an impact on the workspace design. We don’t like to work in silo’ed workspaces.
We want to work in open spaces, attractive offices (just think about the google offices, facebook, ..)Does it all have to be “open spaces”? No, offcourse not.. You still need some closed rooms
I think this is the biggest one! One of those clashes is about email! We are really moving away from email, it’s time consuming, you get lots of “non-interesting” emails, an especially if you’re in a “ever1” distribution list. We don’t want to live an a email only world. We do not use email in our personal lives anymore
“providing” the nexus of forces solutions.
The First thing to understand = Geny’ers are connected.. Ask to everyone, everywhere, …-> Café, everyone is using its mobile to chechin on foursquare letting other people know that they’re there, Instagram some drunk pictures, tweet about random facts..
What if you come to an enterprise, it’s a chock? Let’s assume that you have a question? the “hierarchical” way.. Up -> down.. No direct link or connection. It’s a killer! If I have a question, I need to ask my manager, to his manager, …. No-go
ESN is the first step.. One advice: go social. Go Yammer.. The concept is really simple.. You have a centralized platform, just like you have Facebook, but it’s on enterprise.. It’s secure, private and in the cloud..
What are some business statements?Improve employee engagement. Employees want to feel that they have a voice, that their work is recognized and that they can contribute to the company’s success. Build more productive teams:Enterprise social empowers teams to be more productive by providing better access to the people and information needed to get projects done. People can collaborate effectively across departments, locations and time zonesCreate a connected organization: Harnessing the wisdom of the collective organization has never been more important. Enterprise social helps resolve some of the challenges of working in silos, such as duplication of work and limited access to experts, by allowing employees to “work out loud” on an open, connected platform.
One tip: if you want to drive adoption.. define use cases.. Don’t just put a tool in there and pray that everyone will be using it.. Even gen-y, who is “social” by any means will not use it if there’s noting in it for them.. If you look at facebook, you find information about your friends, you find interesting pictures, nearby events… Make sure that an ESN is a place with some value.
When I come at customers.. I always get the question.. “What are someusecases?” Well, there’re plenty of them.. For example: “Executive Communications”, “Event Management”, “News Sharing”
And that’s not all.. One that’s interesting for me is “Onboarding new employees”.. Actually, when we get a new hire, he/she get access to Yammer the day the contract is signed.. Eventhough that person is not working yet with us.. It justcreates a form of trust..
But there’s more, what if you connect the dots, just like we have in our prive life.. We communicate with different people, across different tools..
Office Graph .. basically, the Office Graph is connecting the signals from all Office Tools.. Likef.exSignals from email, social conversations, documents, sites, instant messages, meetings, and more.. It mapsthe relationships between the people and things that make your business go
There you have it.. The nexus of forces.. Oslo: Cloud, mobile, social and big data.. Aka OSLO. The first application to help people put the Office Graph to work, deliveringpersonalizedinsights and connecting the dots to help people get their jobs done. Oslo provides a natural way for users to navigate, discover, and search people and information across an organizationOslo serves up in a single user interface personalizedinsightsbased on meetings, people, conversations, documents and more
Go video! Cisco states that by 2017, 69% of data will be video-based… Video is really an important medium.. Gen Y has grown up with video. I’ve watched like hours, days, weeks of video at Youtube. Use video in your company, use it for onboarding, for interesting facts.. Just do it
Microsoft is also thinking in this direction.. There will be a Ofice 365 video portal, it will act like a youtube for the enterprise where you can upload company videos.
But also, you will be loved by Gen Y if you give access to the popular platforms like Pluralsight, where you can learn everything for a fair amount of money. Just to show you what’s coming up.. Pluralsight (the leading technical training platform) just acquired digital-tutors, a creative training thing. So.. Video is important!!
To wrap up.. Some takeways to be loved by Gen Y
Go social, go yammer.. It will be integrated in the whole office stack.. So social is thé way to go!
Embrace change.. Because change isn’t always a “bad” thing. If you look at Enterprise Social, it will be change, but you’ll get lots of benefits. People are working together, open and social, it all becomes visible, so you can build a innovative, future proof company.
Of course, new technologies are coming really fast.. We, Gen Y, will bring them in, but don’t also forget the “i-pad generation”, they’ll bring in even more technology. Don’t be afraid to use them!
<Policiesopstellen!!> Side effects! If people are bringing in snapchat (or any alternative).. How will you handle confidential data? Data will disappear.. What then?
Don’t forget the onboarding of Gen Y.. You will have to create a plan of action to onboardMillennial employees into the company culture. I think of Social, video, … But next to that, you also need to make managers aware of the “generational difference,”.. They need to understand the generational differences.
If you’re not ready to handle this.. You need to ask yourself some questions Think out of the boxVisueeluitwerken.
“providing” the nexus of forces solutions.
Thank you! If you have questions, about social, if we can help you with the adoption.. Just give us a call! We can help you get started with your adoption.
