The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 in London, associated with William Shakespeare and his acting troupe. It burned down in 1613 during a performance. The modern Shakespeare's Globe theatre, built in 1997, is a reconstruction located nearby on the Thames river. William Shakespeare, one of history's most famous playwrights, was born in 1564 and died in 1616, writing plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth which include famous phrases that are still used today.
