Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 and married Ann Hathaway at age 18, having three children with her. He was called an "up start crow" by a fellow playwright in 1592 and was a part owner of The Globe theatre in London, where groundlings paid a penny to see plays which had stages but no seats or bathrooms. Queen Elizabeth I died of old age in 1603, the year Shakespeare wrote the tragedy Romeo and Juliet.
