Caesar Augustus ordered a census that required everyone to return to their hometown to register. Joseph, who was from Bethlehem, traveled there with his pregnant wife Mary. When they arrived, every inn was full so the innkeeper allowed them to stay in his stable. That night, Mary gave birth to Jesus and placed him in a manger. Nearby, shepherds tending their flocks saw an angel who told them the savior had been born in Bethlehem. The shepherds went and found Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus just as the angel had said.
