Caesar Augustus ordered a census that required everyone to return to their hometown to register. Joseph, who was from Bethlehem, traveled there with Mary. They could not find room at the inn so the innkeeper allowed them to stay in the stable. That night, Mary gave birth to Jesus and placed him in a manger. Nearby shepherds saw an angel who told them the savior had been born in Bethlehem. They found Joseph, Mary, and Jesus just as the angel said.
