An envelope addressed to President Obama containing ricin, a deadly poison, was intercepted at a Maryland post office. Multiple suspicious packages were also sent to senators. The FBI determined ricin was in the letter to Obama, though it was not in a form that could easily enter the body. "I am KC and I approve this message" was signed on the letters. Ricin is highly toxic and lethal even in small amounts if inhaled or ingested. An Elvis impersonator named Kevin Curtis was initially arrested but released, and the FBI then arrested martial arts instructor James Everett Dutschke, whose studio tested positive for ricin.

The ricin letter

On Tuesday, an envelope addressed to the president was intercepted at a post office in Maryland Multiple suspicious letters and packages were sent to other senators throughout the U.S. causing a lot of panic The FBI declared that there is no obvious connection between these packages and letters to the Boston bombing that came prior to this event
- 3. Eventually after a lot of testing, the FBI was able to determine that in the envelope addressed to Obama had Ricin in it, a deadly poison Although there was poison in this letter, a senate official said that the ricin was not weaponized, meaning it wasn't in a form that could easily enter the body, but still deadly On all (if not most) of the letters and packages, were signed: “I am KC and I approve this message”
- 4. Ricin is a highly toxic protien from the Castor oil plant Only about 2 grains of salt worth of ricin can be very lethal Ricin is dangerous and lethal if inhaled, infected, or ingested If inhaled, ricin can cause respiratory failure, among other symptoms

- 6. Obama’s life was really at steak. Although the ricin poison was not weaponized, it was still very lethal, and Obama got lucky that the letter was intercepted
- 7. When poison-laced letters were sent to President Barack Obama and two other officials, it didn't take long to track down a suspect based on a phrase often used by an Elvis impersonator named Kevin Curtis: "I am KC and I approve this message." Curtis was soon arrested at his house in north Mississippi and charged in the case He swore he didn't do it, and told investigators that maybe a longtime foe, a martial arts instructor named James Everett Dutschke, might have something to do with the case
- 8. By the time Curtis was released on April 23, the FBI was already watching Dutschke. Tests in the studio and on some of those items have tested positive for ricin, the same deadly substance found in the letters sent to Obama Dutschke was arrested Saturday by FBI agents at his home in Tupelo Dutschke is scheduled to appear Monday in a federal court in Mississippi and faces a maximum penalty, if convicted, of life in prison.
