SECTION OUTLINE 11 (REVELATION 11)
A. Verses 1-10
1. What was John given?
He was given a reed (#2563 - NT:2563 (c) a measuring reed or rod : Rev
11:1, 21:15-16) Six cubits or 3 yards in length
Ezek 40:3-5 a measuring reed
Ezek 42:15-20 measuring reed
Like a rod – (#4464 - NT:4464 a stick or wand (as a cudgel, a cane or a
baton of royalty): KJV - rod, sceptre, staff. –
Heb 1:8 scepter of righteousness
Rev 12:5 & 19:15 rod of iron
a. What was he told to measure? List
The temple of God, the altar and them that worship therein.
Remember Rev 7:3 &15 the interlude until all servants were sealed –
the 144,000 representing all spiritual Israel
Same group but now the delay is over
1 Cor 3:16 ye are the temple of God
Eph 2:21 an holy temple
Heb 13:10 we have an altar
1 Pet 2:5 offer up spiritual sacrifices
b. What does measure mean?
#3354 - 1. to measure out or off, a. properly, any space or distance
with a measurer's reed or rule:
Rev 21:15 he had a golden reed to measure the city
2 Cor 10:12 measuring themselves by themselves
c. What was he told not to measure? List
The court without the temple because it was given to the
Gentiles.
Rev 9:4 those not sealed
Rom 11:22 those cut off unbelieving Israel as a nation
Mk 13:2 not one stone left upon another
Matt 24:2 not one stone left ..all thrown down
d. What city is this said to be? What would happen to it?
1
The holy city
Is 52:1 ..Jerusalem the holy city
Matt 4:5 the devil taketh Him up into the holy city
It would be leveled by the Gentiles because it was no longer holy
Is 1:21 How is the faithful city become an harlot
Lk 19:43-44 enemies cast a trench & lay thee even with the ground
Lk 21:6 not be left one stone upon another
Lk 21:24 Jerusalem shall be trampled by the Gentiles ..times fulfilled
Mat 23: 37-38 your house is left unto you desolate
The time period is 42 months, 1260 days or 3 and a half years.
Vespasian received order from Nero to attack Jerusalem in Feb of
AD67. In August of AD 70, 42 months later the order was completed,
Jerusalem leveled, temple destroyed
See Is 7:1-9 for similar literal time period given in Isaiah’s prophecy
when the ten tribes would be carried off and cease to exist.
2 Who was power given to? What does the word mean?
Witnesses - #3144 martus testifies to what seen or heard
Power – not in the text of verse 3. Is in verse 6 and is #1849 . Same word
as in:
Matt 28:18 Jesus has all power. So these had to be given the power from
Him
a. What were they to do? For how long?
Prophesy for 1260 days, 42 months or 3 and a half years.
Rev 12:6 Same time period referred to in Rev 12:6
Again, this is the time period from beginning to end relating to the
initial order to attack Jerusalem in Feb of 67AD to its completion in
Aug of 70AD
b. Why are we told what they are wearing?
Sack cloth is a word related to mourning in
Gen 37:34 Jacob mourned in sackcloth thinking Joseph was dead
Est 4:1-2 Mordecai did the same because of the death sentence
c. What are they described as?
2
Two olive trees and two candlesticks that stand before God.
d. Do you find this description or one similar to it in any of the
prophets?
Yes. In Zech 4:1-14. 2 olive trees referred to as the 2 anointed ones or
sons of oil. Olive trees are always used in a good sense.
Deut 6:11 houses full of good things ..olive trees
Rom 11:16-17 Israel and the Gentiles
Lamps provide light
Zech 4:2 seven lamps are the 7 eyes of the Lord
Ps 119:105 says God’s word is a lamp
Two lamps convey God’s confirmed and established word that will not
fail
Oil is needed for the lamps to burn. Oil is also a healing agent
Prov 45:6-7 ..oil of gladness
Ps 92:10 anointed with fresh oil
Ps 23:5 anoints my head with oil
Is 61:3 oil of joy for mourning
Deut 17:6 requires 2 witnesses to confirm murderers guilt
So, here we have two testaments, old and new representing all the
witnesses who delivered God’s word – the prophets and the apostles
Remember that the gospel would have to be preached in all the world
before the end came per Matt 24:14.
Mat 23:31-37 Jesus referred to the witnesses who would be killed by
the Jewish leaders and these are representative of them
Acts 7:52 They include Stephen who becomes one of them
e. What happens to the man that would hurt them?
Fire proceeds out of their mouth and devours their enemies.
Words come from the mouth
Hos 6:5 slain them by the words of my mouth
Is 49:2 made my mouth like a sharp sword
Rev 2:12 he that hath the sharp sword
Rev 19:15 out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword
3
Heb 4:12 word of God sharper that any two edged sword
f. What do they have power to do? What does this refer to? Think
about it!
They have power to shut heaven.
John 3:27 except it be given him from heaven
In this case they had authority to keep earthly
government/Rome/Jews from interfering with the work of the 2
witnesses.
Their power over water to turn it into blood…with all plagues refers to
what was coming upon Jerusalem, their persecutors, after they
complete their testimony.
Until they complete their testimony, nothing can happen to them.
The days of their testimony/prophesy is the same period referred to
as the days of the voice of the seventh angel in Rev 10:7.
g. What were they to finish?
They were to finish their testimony which would finish the mystery of
God.
Until that was done the persecutors were restrained as in Rev 7:3 hurt
not until all sealed. Nothing could prevent them from completing their
testimony.
h. What happened to them? Where were their bodies left?
When they finished their testimony, their prophesy was over, the
beast ascended from the bottomless pit, made war with them and
overcame them. The Roman authorities are the beast who
persecutes and kills the saints at the request of the Jewish
authorities, sometimes on their own as in the case of Nero when he
blamed his burning of Rome on Christians and killed many of them.
This agrees with Matt 24:14 when the gospel of the kingdom was to
be preached in all the world as a witness. Then would the end
come.
4
The beast referred to here will later be identified with the
persecuting emperor/powers.
2. Who saw their dead bodies? List.
Their dead bodies laid in the street of Jerusalem where everyone saw
them.
The people, kingdoms, tongues, nations. Their testimony known
everywhere.
Acts 2:5 Jews, devout men out of every nation under heaven
Rev 10:7 similar wording
Rev 13:7 “ “
Rev 17:15 “ “
Jerusalem the holy city had become as Sodom and Egypt, wicked, Gentile
cities. Indicating their checkered history.
a. For how long?
For 3 and a half days. Half of the symbolic 7 for complete. Their defeat
was short-lived, temporary, not complete.
b. What did they not do? What did they do?
They did not allow them to be put in graves.
Thet wanted to view them thinking they had defeated them.
The persecutors thought they had gotten rid of the witnesses and
their testimony so they celebrated.
c. Why?
Because they had been tormented by the testimony of the two
witnesses.
Acts 7:54 they heard these things they were cut to the heart
1 Kings 18:17 art thou he that troubleth Israel?
1 Kings 22:18 he would prophesy no good of me but evil
B. Verses 11-19
1. What time period is said to have passed? Is this literal?
Again, 3 and a half days is half of the complete number 7. Not literal.
Their defeat was temporary, their bodies didn’t corrupt. See John 11:39
for four days stinketh
5
The spirit of life entering them and they stood upon their feet indicating
the resurrection of the cause for which they were persecuted and died.
Great fear fell upon those who saw them standing up.
2. Is there an occasion in the prophets where a body is reconstructed
and breath or spirit is put in it?
a. If so, what is the occasion?
Ezek 37:1-14 Israel returning from captivity
b. Literal or figurative?
Figurative language indicating Israel’s return
3. List what happened in Rev 11:12
There was a great voice heard from heaven.
Summoning them and they ascended up to heaven in a cloud.
Their enemies saw what happened
The two witnesses, apostles and prophets are triumphant over their
enemies is signified and they are glorified. Their testimony finished and
confirmed
Matt 23:34 I send you prophets…you kill…and persecute
Rev 6:9-11 How long O Lord
Two witnesses required in order to execute murderers has been
completed. Their testimony is a matter of record.
4. In Prophesy, what do earthquakes signify? Here in verse 13, literal or
figurative?
Earthquakes signify upheaval in human affairs.
Is 29:1-14 The Lord against Ariel, the city of David attacked by the army of
Sennacherib whose army was later destroyed by the Lord
Here figurative.
This occurred “in the same hour”. So, with the completion of the
testimony of the two witnesses, in the hour of interlude between the 6th
and 7th
trumpets, the upheaval relating to the coming destruction of the
Jewish state by the Roman army begins
The tenth part of the city is destroyed. This is the complete city. Not the
ninth of the city but the tenth, all of it.
Seven thousand are slain. All of them in the city.
The end of the Jewish state was at hand. Temple, city and nation, ended
completely
6
The remnant, those not participating in this action, saints and even
others not in the city recognized who was to receive the glory. See the
following:
Matt 27:54 the centurion executioner, truly this was the Son of God
Matt 24:29-30 Immediately after the tribulation of those days…shall
appear the sign (#4591 noun) of the Son of man ..tribes of the earth
mourn .. shall see the Son
Rev 1:1 signify (4592 verb)
5. Which woe has just passed?
The second woe.
6. What was supposed to happen in the days of the seventh
angel/messenger?
According to Rev 10:7 the mystery of God would be
finished/accomplished/fulfilled. The interlude and its tribulation were
over. The completion of the mystery of God, which was declared by His
servants the prophets was fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem.
a. What did the voices say?
First, notice there were great voices, not one voice of a messenger to
announce the seventh trumpet.. They said the kingdoms of this world
had become the kingdoms of the Lord and of His Christ. With the
destruction of the Jewish state and Judaism, the organized
persecution of the Lord’s people ended and the continued worldwide
success and influence of the gospel and triumph of the church and
expansion of the kingdom was unimpeded.
Matt 28:18 all power given to Jesus
Phil 2:9-10 God highly exalted Him..given Him a name above every
name
1 Tim 6:15..King of kings, Lord of lords
Matt 24:31 send His messengers with a great sound of a trumpet to
gather His elect from the 4 winds from one end of heaven to the other
Col 1:13-14 the obedient were translated into the kingdom of His dear
Son
7
Heb 12:18-28 a spiritual kingdom not subject to man’s influence or
destruction
b. Are there similar things said in the prophets concerning the
kingdoms of this world and of Christ’s reign?
Yes. Notice again Matt 24:14 & 31 gospel preached in all the world…
from the winds …one end of heaven to the other
Is 11:1-12 9 earth full of the knowledge of the Lord … from the 4
corners of the earth. Hab 2:14 earth filled with the knowledge of the
Lord Dan 2:44 the God of heaven shall set up a
kingdom that shall consume all these nations.
Mic 4:4-7 shall reign over them in Mt Zion forever.
c. What tense is used concerning the reign?
The tense is future. But note that the kingdoms of the world had
become the kingdoms of the Lord. So, He rules now and shall
continue to rule in the future forever.
Luke 1:33 of His kingdom there shall be no end.
1 Cor 15:24-26 He must reign until all enemies are put under His feet
7. What did the 24 elders do? List what they said concerning the Lord
God Almighty.
They fell upon their faces and worshipped God
12 elders under OT, 12 elders under the NT. Always part of God’s pattern
Ex 3:16 gather the elders of Israel together
Heb 11:1-2 by it the elders received a good report
Tit 1:5 ordain elders in every city
They thanked the Lord God Almighty worshipping Him as they did in Rev
4:10 and 11.
Ps 93:1-2 The Lord reigneth..thy throne is established of old
Rev 1:8 and first words of 11
These represent the faithful of the OT (12 elders) and NT (12 apostles), of
Israel and the church. Indicating the success of the Lord establishing His
kingdom/church.
8
The opposite of the mourning in Rev 1:7 and Matt 24:30. Now is the
answer to the souls under the altar in Rev 6:9-11.
8. How did the nations feel about this?
They were angry because the Lord’s wrath was to come and destroy
those who destroy the earth and judge them.
Nations - #1484 Ethnos – a race, tribe, foreign (non Jewish)
Ps 2:1-6 why do the heathen rage
Acts 4:24-30 David hath said, Why do the heathen (#1484 Ethnos) rage
The day of the Lord’s wrath had come upon the persecuting authorities
See Rev 6:15-17 the day of His wrath is come
They were dead as persecutors and being lords of dominion over the
Lord’s saints
See Is 26:13-14 others have had dominion over us..they are dead.
Rev 6:9-11 The time of avenging had come
Matt 23:35 and all the righteous blood upon the earth had come
Lk 21:22 these be the days of vengeance
List what was to happen
“The” (in the text) reward was to be given to the servants, the prophets,
the saints and them that fear the name of the Lord, small and great.
Rev 2:10 be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life
James 1:12 endureth temptation...receive a crown of life
1 Pet 5:4 when the Chief Shepherd shall appear…shall receive a crown of
life
Rev 3:11… I come quickly … hold fast… that no man take thy crown
9. Check back over the previous chapters in Rev. for references to
servants, prophets, and saints. What do you notice?
Servants - Rev 1:1, Rev 2:20; Rev 7:3; Rev 10:7; Rev 19:2 & 5; Rev 22:3
& 6
Prophets - Rev 10:7; Rev 11:10 & 18; Rev 16:6; Rev 18:20 & 24; Rev 22:6
& 29
Saints – Rev 5:8; Rev 8:3 & 4; Rev 11:18; Rev 13:7 & 10; Rev 14:12; Rev
15:3; Rev 16:6; Rev 17:6; Rev 18:24; Rev 19:8; Rev 20:9
They had all been obedient to the Lord in teaching and obeying His
word. They had been persecuted and killed by those who did not
9
want to obey God. In Rev 6:9-11, those who had died were praying to
God for justice, to be avenged. God told them to rest because other
faithful ones had to complete their work, to die and fulfill the Lord’s
will. At this point in the Revelation the time had come to begin
completing what the Lord had planned.
10. What was opened in heaven? The temple
a. Is this the same thing referred to in verse 1? Why?
Yes.
Those that worshipped in it were to be measured.
1 Cor 3:16 ye are the temple of God
Eph 2:19-22 an holy temple
1 Tim 3:15 the house of God
Heb 12:22-23 church of the first born ones
Heb 13:10… we have an altar
1 Pet 2:5 to offer up spiritual sacrifices
Eph 3:10-11 His eternal purpose
b. Why mention the ark of the testimony?
Heb 8:1-2 This is the true tabernacle that the Lord pitched and not
man
The ark of the covenant/testament was within the second veil of the
tabernacle of the OT. This ark was long lost and not in the Jewish
temple of John’s day. In the true tabernacle, the Lord’s spiritual
temple, we find everything restored. God’s covenant is intact, His
building sure and complete.
c. What natural occurrences are mentioned in verse 19? What do
they normally mean in the prophets and Revelation?
Lightening’s, thundering’s, an earthquake, and great hail.
Normally, judgments of God upon a people and nation for their
refusal to repent and obey.
Is 28:1-2 …which as a tempest of hail …
Is 29:1-6 thou shall be visited of the Lord of Hosts with thunder and
with earthquake…
Message from God coming
Ex 19:17-20 the mount quaked
Heb 12:18-21 ye are not come to the mount …burned with fire …a
tempest
