The document provides an introduction to direct and reported speech. It explains that direct speech uses quotation marks to report the exact words spoken, while reported speech conveys the general meaning without quotation marks. The document then discusses the importance of reported speech and different types including reported statements, questions, requests and suggestions. It provides examples of how to change pronouns, tenses, modal verbs and other elements when changing from direct to reported speech. Finally, exercises are presented to allow practicing changing statements and questions into reported speech.
