2. Background
In this summer vacation, we visited Rishikesh where many
people were there some for religious purpose, some for nature
and some for adventure. But the bad thing that I noticed was
the waste produced by all these tourists and from all this waste
plastic bottles were the most in quantity. These plastic bottles
were used by everyone, even we also used up to 20-25 plastic
bottles in our whole trip! So, when we came back home, I
asked my father that when we throw these bottles in the
dustbin then, where do they go? He said that when we throw
these bottles they end up in landfills or the ocean which kills
animals and humans also. This clicked my mind and I started
my research on what happens to discarded plastic bottles.
3. Research
While my research I read an article which actually says that
80% of plastic water bottles end up in landfills. It takes up
to 1000 years for ever single bottle to decompose. I also
read that estimated 13 billion plastic bottles are disposed of
each year. Plastic thrown in oceans also kills up to 1
million sea creatures per year and an estimated 14 billion
pounds of plastic is dumped in the world's oceans every
year. I also found that plastics do not exist in nature, and
therefore, there are no naturally occurring organisms that
can break them down effectively or at all and only 9% of
all the plastic is recycled nhbb
