Most small business have a website, but unless the company is purely an Internet company there is never enough time or know-how to get the best from the site and grow customers and profits. Here you will find some ideas and support you can use.
Edgard Eeckman: Is internet health information an answer to the doctor's aesc...Stiftung Careum
Eeckman, Edgard, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels), Brussels, Belgium
Teaser: Specialized knowledge is a power source in the doctor-patient relationship. In our digital society
patients have potentially easier access to medical knowledge. Is the knowledge gap between patient and
doctor thereby narrowing?
Background, objective: The research studies the possible link between the internet as a social source of
health information and its influence in empowering the patient in his relationship with his general practitioner. A
mixed research approach has been developed of which the first phase is a quantitative one: an internet survey
towards healthy people and patients. The survey has been launched in October 2012 and was closed on 30
August 2013. 3071 respondents participated. Although the survey has been done serving as a starting point
for the qualitative part of the research, the research makes a first analysis of the question: is knowledge a
source of power in the patient-doctor relationship and is the internet as a social source of health information
neutralizing the aesculapian power (Brody, 1992) the doctor possesses?
Approach, methods, patient engagement: The answers on the survey allow first thoughts on knowledge as
a source of power and the possibility of the internet as a social source of health information to neutralize the
esculapian power (Brody, 1992) of the doctor.
Findings: Knowledge is a recognized source of power, but not every doctor possesses aesculapian power in
any circumstances. Not only is aesculapian power not absolute, the notion of knowledge isn't either.
The internet as a potential source of health information may help some patients to decrease the aesculapian
power of the doctor. It may; we note different conditions. We distinguish two categories of conditions or
obstacles: those linked to the internet as a health information source and those connected to the health
information seeker. A large majority of our respondents (91,24%) recognize general practitioners having medical knowledge they
don't possess. Part of those who don't, are chronically ill patients, which is an indication of these patients
being experts in their own right. Those who don't, also have specific characteristics indicating a lack of trust in
their general practitioners. The internet as a source of health information is not considered to be a totally
trustful information source by the respondents.
Discussion and implications: Any technology should not be considered isolated from the social and cultural
processes in which it has been created, exists and is used. Several conditions have to be fulfilled and
obstacles have to be taken for the internet to serve as a health information source capable of serving as
counterweight against the aesculapian power of the doctor. There is no base for technological determinism or
internet centrism.

Taming Information Chaos with the Power of 2.0Judy O'Connell
Web 2.0 provides ways to filter, streamline, organise, share, distribute or gather information from the burgeoning information jungle. With the power of 2.0 the information revolution can be tamed. Teachers can learn new ways to incorporate search strategies into their personal information-seeking toolkits and then work with students to weave deeper understandings of how to find information right into the fabric of their learning. In a learning environment where writing, reflecting, creating and collaborating are driving authentic engagement with content, searching and researching has to encompass multi-literacies and information fluency in the process. It’s time to challenge the old standards of ‘search’. With all our experience as teachers, we are novices in the information revolution. It’s not a one-size-fits-all environment, and the myriad of choices, tools and techniques we could customise for our professional purposes need explanation and elaboration to understand how to be a confident, efficient and effective news and knowledge curators. This session will show how connecting, collaborating and networking are dependent on knowledge filters and information search techniques that allow teachers to become extraordinary information architects in charge of their own knowledge work, ready to mentor and support the learning of their students.

While the Mexican War technically accomplished America's "Manifest Destiny" of expanding to the Pacific Ocean, the United States government did not devote its energies to truly conquering the western territories until after the Civil War. The departure of the Confederate States paved the way for active government involvement. The United States government used land grants to homesteaders and transcontinental railroads, as well as military campaigns against American Indian tribes, to "conquer" the West. After a great deal of waste, fraud, and murder, America's "manifest destiny" was finally achieved.
Why does so much web content SUCK? And how can we make it BETTER? To find out, we need to question our perspective about content.
Content isn't a feature.
It's not "lorem ipsum" text. It's not something you "bolt on" after design is done. It's not even design or code or even plain text. Instead, content is about brands, audiences, data, systems, processes and workflows. In short, great content is all about PEOPLE.
Which means that content is an EXPERIENCE. Once we understand that, we can get to work on making our content BETTER. Better for users, for businesses, for communities... for a Better Web!

Why a Newsroom is the Perfect Google Panda FoodSally Falkow
In July 2015 google rolled out another major Panda Update to their algorithm. A well-designed online newsroom that acts as the brand's content hub fulfills all the criteria for the new Panda update.
As the media landscape continue to shift and newsroom resources dwindle, there are many opportunities for PR to work with the media and create newsworthy content. These three skills will improve your media relations and your brand awareness
Brands need to beware of treating storytelling as an end in itself. Stories work when the audience is engaged. Brands need to get customers involved and help them shape and tell their personal story with the brand.
Every business know they should "Think like publisher" and create branded content. But a business has different goals - they're not only looking for an audience and eyeballs. A business owner or CMO needs to know how to make content that supports the business goals and gets ROI.

Online Newsrooms vs Digital Content HubsSally Falkow
The traditional text-based online newsroom which lists press releases but not much else is outdated and needs to be replaced with a visually rich content hub that includes social content, blog posts, images and video and a database of expert bios.
As more brands realize the value of publishing content the value of a digital newsroom is gaining popularity. Big brands like Red Bull, coke and Adidas are committed to publishing magazine-style newsrooms with both curated and created content.
Child Life Month is about events that place a child at risk. Children that don't get a quality preschool education are 25% more likely to drop out of school, 40% more likely to become a teen parent and 70% more likely to commit a violent crime and be incarcerated. PRESSfeed, the socially integrated online newsroom, released the 2013 study of the Inc. 500 companies’ newsrooms. Despite the major changes that have taken place in the media landscape over the past 12 months, such as the increased interest in visual content from the public and the media, the Inc. 500 companies seem to be lagging at least a year or two behind.
Media newsroom are undermanned and no longer have the resources to produce in depth stories. Brands can earn media by collaborating with the media and helping them to produce great news stories.
