Rocky Grove High School Are the Orioles really the “Best of the Nest?” or are they just “steps below the rest???”
Question: Do the elementary schools tend to “carry” the high schools to increase district averages? MATH SCORES (avg for each district) READING SCORES (avg for each district) High school avg High school avg
What have we done at the high school level to improve our PSSA Scores??? 4 Sight implementation Last year implemented in grades 7 and 8 This year administered to grades 7 through 11
How do we compare with the state (% of proficient students)? Average of grades: 7, 8, and 11
If we stayed at this rate, how will we compare with the state for 2011? *Our 2009 requirements will still be in effect for 2010; we have to prepare for increase in 2011!!
As teachers and administrators in this school district, how do we compare with other schools like… Titusville Oil City Franklin Cranberry
How do our math scores compare with other local high schools (% of proficient students)? At every grade level, we fall below most of our local high schools!
How do our READING scores compare with other local high schools (% of proficient students)?? Except for our 7 th grade results, we fall behind all other districts significantly!!
How do we compare with our WRITING scores (% of proficient students)??? We are looking good in 8 th grade What’s going on in 11 th grade?? *We are the only school district that “dropped” from 8 th to 11 th grade *We are behind the other districts by over 20%!!
How do we compare with the new SCIENCE test (% of proficient students)??? Although we look pretty good in comparison with the other districts, remember… We have a lot of room to improve!!
Why do we seem to be so behind? Other schools have been administering the 4Sight test to all grade levels (7-11) for years Other schools have not had as much transition in their administration Class sizes are smaller Our students have an apathetic attitude towards PSSA
Our Current Solutions to the Problem… PSSA Math and Reading Block Classes (grades 7 and 8) Study Island once per week in Math and English courses PSSA Remediation to seniors who have not passed their 11 th grade test
How do we become “Best in the Nest??” 11 th grade block courses (PSSA math, reading, and writing) Writing across the curriculum Flexibility in school schedule for remediation based on PSSA or 4Sight After school tutoring (PSSA/4Sight) Smaller class sizes to meet individual needs Remediation instructor Consequences for not being proficient… Taking remediation during study hall or electives Not “walking” during graduation if 12 th grade PSSA retake scores do not make proficiency guidelines
Are there any other ways?? Positively reward students for their “success” on PSSA or 4Sight Have grade-level competitions and post the results in the hallways or by the office Send “Way to Go” postcards or certificates home for students proficient or advanced Have an awards ceremony/assembly—invite parents
Let’s create a committee focused to making us “The Best in the Nest” We need your input to make the change! How do we motivate our students How do we make their proficiency important to them We have a goal, but could you help to create a plan of action? Can you give us a clear sense of direction? Can you come up with a proposed plan of implementation? Will you be willing to problem solve when frustrations arise? Are you up for the challenge????
If we all work together… Our results WILL improve Our students will be motivated Our teachers will feel more at ease Our administrators will be proud And we will be… The Best in the Nest!!
