The Trojan War was
waged against the city
of Troy by
the Achaeans (Greeks)
after Paris of Troy
took Helen from her
husband Menelaus, king
of Sparta.
Odysseus is the Lord of the
Isle of Ithaca who has been
missing for 20 years.
He spent the first 10 years
fighting in the Trojan War,
and the next 10 in continual
wanderings en route home
from the war.
Penelope is the wife of
Odysseus who was harassed by
suitors during his absence.
She stalled the suitors by
promising them that she will
choose a husband once she
finishes weaving a burial
shroud for her father-in-law.
Penelope’s suitors waited
for several years for her to
choose a husband among
them.
During this time, they
devoured Odysseus livestock
and abused the servants.
Telemachus, the son of
Odysseus, is their direct
victim.
Athena, the goddess of wisdom and
daughter of Zeus, begs her father to
allow Odysseus to go home.
Odysseus spent 7 years on the isle
of the nymph Calypto. Athena
believes he has suffered enough
during those times.
Athena comes down from
Mount Olympus to visit
Telemachus. She
encouraged him to sail and
look for his father.
Telemachus sailed with Athena who was disguised as an
elder friend of his father, Mentor.
Telemachus and Mentor arrived at Pylus. They were
welcomed by Nestor who informed them of Odysseus’s fate.
Telemachus then travelled to
Sparta with Peisistratus, the
son of Nestor.
Continued..
This is where he learned that
his father was imprisoned in
Calypso’s Isle.
Hermes was sent to
Calypso’s isle to
demand Odysseus
liberation in Zeus’
name.
Poseidon sees Odysseus’ escape and
sends a storm to destroy him. Athena
and Leukothea helps him to swim to
safely to the Isle of Phaeaceans,
Scheria.
Odysseus met Nausikaa and
she then takes him to the
palace. Odysseus was
welcomed by Alcinoös and his
queen.
When the hosts found out
about Odysseus’ identity,
they demanded him to tell
them of his many
adventures.
Odysseus begins his tale with
the departure of his 12 ships
from Troy and his encounters
with the Ciconians and Lotus-
Eaters.
He then recounts his adventure
with Polyphemus the Cyclops.
He tells them about how he
incurred the enmity of Poseidon.
THE ISLAND OF
THE CYCLOPS
Odysseus and his men stopped
at Aeolia where he was given a
bag of winds by Aeolus. His
men was curious of the bag
that caused the journey to be
harder.
They landed at Telepylos, the
land of the Laestrygonians.
His men were eaten by the
king and they had to retreat
quickly.
AEOLIA &
TELEPYLOS
The men land on Circe’s island,
Aeaea, where they were turned
into pigs. Hermes helped
Odysseus to get into Circa’s
home without turning into an
animal.
She was in awe and asked Odysseus to make love to
her. Odysseus declines unless she agrees on a binding
oath. She then helped him to get home. She told
Odysseus that he has to go to the underworld and look
for Tiresias first.
AEAEA: CIRCE’S
ISLAND
Odysseus enters
the Underworld
alone. He had to
offer sacrifices and
fight off spirits. He
eventually finds
Tiresias and was
told how to get
home.
While on his way
back, Odysseus
notices his mother’s
spirit. He talks to
her for a while to
find out how she
died and why.
THE LAND OF
THE DEAD
Circe warned Odysseus of
the Sirens before he left.
Sirens are creatures that
lure men with their singing.
He had to put beeswax in
the oarsman’s ears so they
won’t hear them singing.
THE ISLAND OF
THE SIRENS
Odysseus had to be tied to the mast of the ship if he
wished to listen to the sirens.
To get home, Odysseus and his men had to pass through two
cliffs. The Scylla lived on one cliff and the Charybdis on the
other side.
Odysseus had to decide which cliff he would have his men
row by. It was a decision of losing six men versus all his men
and his ship.
SCYLLA AND
CHARYBDIS
Their next stop was the land of Helios, the sun god. Odysseus
was warned that he should not let his men harm the cattle. If
they were to leave the cattle unharmed they would all return
to Ithaca. If they harmed the cattle they would all die except
for Odysseus, he alone would return to Ithaca, but with a
great delay. Odysseus ordered them to leave the cattle alone.
They agree to only eat the food Circe gave them.
THE ISLAND OF
HELIOS
The winds end up really bad and they are stuck there for over
a month. While Odysseus goes inland to pray for guidance, one
of the men says the worst kind of death is starvation. The man
then suggests that they find the best cattle and sacrifice the
cattle to the gods. In doing so they make Helios very mad.
Odysseus was imprisoned at the
island seven years. When Zeus
ordered Calypso to free Odysseus,
she was hesitant.
She tried to trick him into staying by
saying, “Is she more beautiful than I
am? I am a goddess.” However,
Odysseus told her that though
nobody is fairer than she is, he needs
to return home to his wife.
OGYGIA: CALYPSO’S
ISLAND
Alcinous was impressed
with Odysseus’ story that
he gave him a ship so he
can go home.
When Odysseus returns to
Ithaca, he disguised
himself as a beggar.
He talked to Telemachus but told him not to tell anyone
who he really is. They then went to Penelope’s house where
he found the suitors which made him unhappy.
Penelope was told to pick one of
the suitors. So, she decided to
make an impossible task for
them. Whoever wins will be her
husband.
The task is to string Odysseus’
bow and shoot an arrow through
ten targets in a row.
Odysseus was able to it. He then killed the suitors after
they found out who he is. Odysseus told Penelope that he
is home and that ended his journey.
