“Adventures of
  Odysseus”
The Odyssey
• TheOdyssey is the story
  of Odysseus’ 10-year
journey to return home to
       his family.
Before the
            Odyssey when
• The 10- year battle ended
Odysseus, king of Ithaca ( a Greek
island), broke into the walls of Troy
with the Trojan Horse “gift.”
Who is Odysseus?
• Laertes, King of Ithaca married
Anticlea.
• They purchased a slave
woman, Eurycleia.
• Laertes and Anticlea had a son; was
named “Odysseus”, by his grandfather
Who is Odysseus?
• Odysseus becomes the King of
Ithaca and marries Penelope, daughter
of King Icarius.
• Odysseus did not want to join the
Trojan War until his son Telemachus
was born.
Odysseus’
• Because Odysseus is gone, suitors
           Absence home.
     flocked Penelope’s
  • If Telemachus tries to assume his
father’s throne, he would be likely be
                 overthrown.
• If Penelope does not soon choose a
   suitor, civil war will start in Ithaca.
The Adventures of Odysseus
Odysseus’ & the Gods
Though Athena and Poseidon helped
 the Greeks during the Trojan War, a
 Greek warrior violates Cassandra in
  Athena’s temple during the sack of
   Troy, so Athena turns against the
Greeks and convinces Poseidon to do
               the same.
Odysseus’ & the Gods
The Greeks are beset by terrible storms
  on the way home; many ships are
 destroyed and the fleet is scattered.
 Odysseus and his crew are blown off
  course, which starts a decade-long
   series of adventures for the great
              Greek chief.
t:   City of Ismarus (Island of the Cicone
     • Odysseus decided to raid Ismaros,
     where Maron gave him many gallons of
     wine.
     •This gave the Cicones time to
     recuperate their losses and they in
     return, attacked Odysseus' men.
t:   City of Ismarus (Island of the Cicone
     • The men finally pulled back and left.
     • They attempted to travel to Malea.
     • But the winds blew them off course
     and instead they landed in the land of
     the Lotus Eaters after ten days of
     storm.
2nd: Island of the Lotus-Eaters
• Odysseus and his men landed here
to take on water. He warned his men
to be careful on this Island. The lotus
plant was said to be a drug that if you
took it you would never leave this
Island.
2nd: Island of the Lotus-Eaters
• He sent three men out to get the
information of the inhabitants of the
odd island. When they came back, it
was apparent that they had eaten the
lotus flowers and that they had no will
to return to Ithaca.
3rd : Island of the Cyclops
• Here Odysseus takes twelve men
with him ashore to explore.

• Odysseus comes to this Island and
is trapped by the Cyclops.

   • They encounter a
     Cyclops named
      Polyphemus.
   •Polyphemus is the
  Cyclops who is son of
Poseidon and he plans on
 eating all of Odysseus’s

the Cyclops and
mocks him as he
leaves the Island.
• With Odysseus’s
cleverness he and
his men escape this

4th : Island of the Wind (Aeolia)

• While on shore Aeolus who is
the keeper of winds gives
Odysseus a bag of winds so
that Odysseus is able to travel
home.
4th : Island of the Wind (Aeolia)
• But when the ships are in sight of
Ithaca, Odysseus' men get curious
and open the bag of winds, thus
propelling them away from Ithaca and
back to Aeolus. This time the king is
not hospitable and forces them to
leave his island.
5th : Island of the Laestrygonians
• Away from Aeolus, Odysseus and
his fleet come to a strange place
called the Land of the Laestrygonians.
•The people here are cannibals and
they ate some of Odysseus' men.

• Then they launch rocks from the
high cliffs, destroying 11 of
Odysseus' 12 ships. Odysseus is
compelled to leave with his only
ship.
6th : Aeaea (Circe’s Island)
• After the Land of the
Laestrygonians, Odysseus
and his one ship with one
crew come to an island
called Aeaea.
•Here an enchantress
named Circe lives.
6th : Aeaea (Circe’s Island)
• After an initial setback, Odysseus and
Circe become friends and lovers.

•Circe captures Odysseus, and puts
him under her spell. She turns his men
into swine.
6th : Aeaea (Circe’s Island)
• Hermes gives Odysseus a magical
herb that will help Odysseus escape
the spell of Circe and have his men
changed back into humans. Circe
also helps Odysseus with his search
for Ithaca.
7th : The Underworld / Realms of Hades
  • This is the Island of
  the dead also known as
  the Underworld.
  •Odysseus must go
  here to talk to the
  prophet Tiresias.
7th : The Underworld / Realms of Hades
  •Tiresias tells Odysseus of how he
  must get home, and of the upcoming
  dangers that lay ahead. With the
  newly acquired knowledge, Odysseus
  and his men leave the underworld and
  travel back to Aeaea to bury one of
  the crew who had died there.
8th : Island of the Sirens
• Odysseus being a brave man allows
himself to be tide to the front of his
boat as he passes the Island of the
Sirens.
•The Sirens are beautiful women who
sing and attract seamen into the
shallow harbor when they become

• Wisely, Odysseus fills his mens'
ears with wax so they will not be
able to hear the singing.
•They pass the Sirens unharmed
and keep on sailing south.
9th : Scylla and Charybdis
• Scylla is a six-
headed monster
who lives in a
cave above the
cliffs on one side
of the strait.

• Charybdis is
a fierce
whirlpool that
lays on the
opposite side
of Scylla.

• The ship safely steers around
Charybdis and then come to Scylla
where they lose six men by the six
mouths of the monster. A little
battered, they sail on.
10th : Island of the Sun God (Thrinacia)
 • The home of the cattle of the sun
 god Helios.
 •Odysseus was warned not to eat the
 cattle or else the gods would become
 angry.

 • Odysseus’s men are at the starving
 point and find cattle on this land
 while Odysseus is asleep.
 •Helios punishes all of Odysseus’s
 men with death but Odysseus is lead
 to safety by Zeus.
11th : Island of Ogygia (Calypso)
•The island is home to the beautiful
nymph Calypso who Odysseus
befriends and becomes lovers with.
•After nine years with her, Odysseus
is decreed to return to Ithaca by the
gods.
12th : Island of the Phaeacians
•The island is home to the beautiful
nymph Calypso who Odysseus
befriends and becomes lovers with.
•After nine years with her, Odysseus
is decreed to return to Ithaca by the
gods.
12th : Island of the Phaeacians (Scheria
  •This is the home of King Alcinous
  and Queen Arete. Also on this Island
  lives the Phaecians. Odysseus stays
  here after being punished on sea by
  Poseidon. The Phaecians give
  Odysseus a magical boat to Ithaca.
BACK AT HOME: Island of Ithaca

 • Soon Odysseus is back on
 Ithaca. But before he can take
 back his rightful place as king,
 he must first defeat the
 suitors!!!

  • 27. 7th : The Underworld / Realms of Hades •Tiresias tells Odysseus of how he must get home, and of the upcoming dangers that lay ahead. With the newly acquired knowledge, Odysseus and his men leave the underworld and travel back to Aeaea to bury one of the crew who had died there.

  • 29. 8th : Island of the Sirens • Wisely, Odysseus fills his mens' ears with wax so they will not be able to hear the singing. •They pass the Sirens unharmed and keep on sailing south.
  • 30. 9th : Scylla and Charybdis • Scylla is a six- headed monster who lives in a cave above the cliffs on one side of the strait.
  • 31. 9th : Scylla and Charybdis • Charybdis is a fierce whirlpool that lays on the opposite side of Scylla.
  • 32. 9th : Scylla and Charybdis • The ship safely steers around Charybdis and then come to Scylla where they lose six men by the six mouths of the monster. A little battered, they sail on.
  • 33. 10th : Island of the Sun God (Thrinacia) • The home of the cattle of the sun god Helios. •Odysseus was warned not to eat the cattle or else the gods would become angry.

  • 35. 11th : Island of Ogygia (Calypso) •The island is home to the beautiful nymph Calypso who Odysseus befriends and becomes lovers with. •After nine years with her, Odysseus is decreed to return to Ithaca by the gods.
  • 36. 12th : Island of the Phaeacians •The island is home to the beautiful nymph Calypso who Odysseus befriends and becomes lovers with. •After nine years with her, Odysseus is decreed to return to Ithaca by the gods.
  • 37. 12th : Island of the Phaeacians (Scheria •This is the home of King Alcinous and Queen Arete. Also on this Island lives the Phaecians. Odysseus stays here after being punished on sea by Poseidon. The Phaecians give Odysseus a magical boat to Ithaca.
  • 38. BACK AT HOME: Island of Ithaca • Soon Odysseus is back on Ithaca. But before he can take back his rightful place as king, he must first defeat the suitors!!!
