The bikini originated in 1600 AD from mosaics depicting women in two-piece bathing suits found in an old Sicilian villa. In 1946, French designer Louis Réard introduced the modern bikini, naming it after Bikini Atoll where the US was testing nuclear weapons. The bikini was initially controversial and considered immoral by some. It gained popularity in the 1960s due to film stars and the changing social attitudes in the Western world.
