The document proposes a framework for performing joint inference over multiple tasks like attribute prediction, link prediction, and entity resolution on noisy information networks. The key aspects are:
1) A declarative language like Datalog is used to specify the domain, features, predictions, and iteration over predictions. This allows users to declaratively specify the prediction tasks and how they are combined.
2) A unifying framework is presented where the domain, features, predictions, and applying predictions are specified generically to support the different tasks.
3) An implementation of the framework uses the declarative language to efficiently handle complex prediction functions and arbitrary interleaving of the prediction tasks.

The use of data science and machine learning in the investment industry is increasing. Financial firms are using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to augment traditional investment decision making.
In this workshop, we aim to bring clarity on how AI and machine learning are revolutionizing financial services. We will introduce key concepts and, through examples and case studies, will illustrate the role of machine learning, data science techniques, and AI in the investment industry.
Agenda:
In Part 1, we will discuss key trends in AI and machine learning in the financial services industry, including the key use cases, challenges, and best practices.
In Part 2, we will illustrate two case studies where AI and machine learning techniques are applied in financial services.
Case studies:
Sentiment Analysis Using Natural Language Processing in Finance
In this case study, we will demonstrate the use of natural language processing techniques to analyze EDGAR call earnings transcripts that could be used to generate sentiment analysis scores using the Amazon Comprehend, IBM Watson, Google, and Azure APIs (application programming interfaces). We will illustrate how these scores can be used to augment traditional quantitative research and for trading decisions.
Credit Risk Decision Making Using Lending Club Data
In this case study, we will use the Lending Club data set to build a credit risk model using
machine learning techniques.
Digitization is a burning issue in the business world today. The accountants are tasked to learn new
skills in order to fit in to the new demands of their job. Existing accountants are afraid that they will lose their
jobs. In the light of this, this research investigated the effect of digitization in the job of the accountant to
establish if it was a threat or a companion to the accountant
Jonno Bourne worked on a project analyzing smart meter data from several years to help understand customer energy consumption. He used hierarchical clustering and data visualization techniques to analyze the large, messy dataset with over half missing data. This allowed him to identify naturally forming clusters of customers with similar behavior patterns. Once clusters were identified, he could accurately predict what kind of energy user they were and their likely future consumption. The project demonstrated that data science approaches can discover hidden user groups and patterns in smart meter data to improve energy forecasting.

The digital workplace whitepaper - infocentric researchAlex Krol
1) Employees spend 1-2 hours per day searching for information needed to do their jobs, wasting over 30 work days per year. This huge productivity loss has gone largely unnoticed by organizations.
2) Current information management systems in organizations were designed based on outdated industrial-era work practices and are ill-suited for information-focused work.
3) The "Digital Workplace" is a proposed solution to fundamentally change how information work gets done through an integrated system that is aware of employee roles and tasks and actively supports employees throughout the workday.
Automation: work, inequality, skills and jobsAzeem Azhar
This document discusses the impacts of automation on inequality and skills. It notes that automation has led to growing inequality and a decline in the labor share of value in many countries. Automation has created "superstar firms" with huge value per employee. However, automation also poses risks of mass long-term unemployment if not addressed. The document outlines two potential scenarios: 1) wide-scale automation leads to only a handful of jobs or 2) industrial reconfiguration creates plenty of new types of jobs. It argues companies should address the externalities of automation and societies should widen access to key skills to mitigate these risks.
A Guide to Succeeding in the Internet of Things provides innovators, designers, engineers and strategists with shared tools and a vocabulary to collaborate and create fresh, viable product and service concepts in the Internet of Things (IoT).
The document discusses the history and impact of the electronic spreadsheet, beginning with the creation of the first spreadsheet program VisiCalc in 1979 by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston. It describes how spreadsheets automated financial tasks and calculations, giving users new capabilities to sort data, create scenarios, and update information frequently. This empowered decentralized decision making and increased reliance on quantitative data. While spreadsheets provided benefits, the document cautions they oversimplify reality and could mislead through persuasive formatting.
The Digital Workplace - Redefining Productivity in the Information AgeElizabeth Lupfer
The document discusses the need for organizations to redefine how information work is done to increase productivity in the digital age. It notes that while information technology has advanced, work practices have not adapted and continue to rely on outdated industrial-era models. As a result, employees spend over an hour per day searching for information instead of being productive. The proposed solution is to create a "Digital Workplace" that integrates different work systems and is tailored to employees' specific roles and tasks. This could fundamentally change how work gets done and help organizations gain a competitive advantage through improved information work productivity.
This document summarizes a presentation on how work will change in a post-COVID world. It discusses how the pandemic has accelerated various trends, such as the growth of remote work and e-commerce. Recent graduates may face higher unemployment or need to accept lower-paying jobs. However, times of crisis can also create opportunities for career development and entrepreneurship. The presentation advises companies to focus on innovation, agility, and reskilling. Individuals are encouraged to develop skills in resilience, continuous learning, self-driven entrepreneurship, virtual networking, and adapting to new environments.

The document presents a waste-based management approach for quantifying and removing waste in construction projects. It defines waste-based management as focusing on making waste visible from the beginning of a project. The approach involves quantifying waste using metrics like waste of materials, inventory, labor, equipment, and defects. Tools for controlling and removing waste include visual management, monitoring indicators, Lean tools like Last Planner System and 5S, and applying principles from the Toyota Production System. The approach aims to transform non-value-adding activities into profit by accurately identifying, measuring, and reducing waste.

The New Division Of Labor -How Computers Are Creating the Next Job Market-PISA 2009 -ERA

How Computers Are Creating the
Next Job Market
PISA 2009 -ERA

2. ON MARCH 22, 1964, THE AD HOC COMMITTEE ON THE TRIPLE
Revolution sent a fourteen-page memorandum
to President Lyndon Johnson
The signers included chemist Linus Pauling
(recipient of two Nobel Prizes),
economist Gunnar Myrdal (a future
Nobel Prize-winner), and
Gerard Piel, publisher of Scientific American.
3. A new era of production has begun
• Its principles of organization are as different from
those of the industrial era as those of the
industrial era were different from the agricultural.
• The cybernation revolution has been brought
about by the combination of the computer and
the automated self-regulating machine.
• This results in a system of almost unlimited
productive capacity which requires progressively
less human labor.
• Cybernation is already reorganizing the economic
and social system to meet its own needs.
4. It involves rethinking education and training,
beginning with answering four fundamental questions:
• What kinds of tasks do humans perform better than
computers?
• What kinds of tasks do computers perform better than
humans?
• In an increasingly computerized world, what well-paid
work is left for people to do both now and in the
future?
• How can people learn the skills to do this work?
5. In 1970, more than one-half of employed U.S. adults worked in
two broad occupational categories:
• blue-collar jobs and clerical (white)jobs
• Few people got rich in these jobs, but they
supported middle- and lower-middle-class living
and many were open to high school graduates.
• Today, less than 40 percent of adults have blue-
collar or clerical jobs and many of these jobs
require at least some college education.
• The computerization of work has played a
significant role in this change.
6. In the past, when new technologies have replaced workers in a given
sector, new sectors have always emerged to absorb the displaced
laborers
• Today, all three of the traditional sectors of the economy--
agriculture, manufacturing, and service--are experiencing
technological displacement, forcing millions onto the
unemployment rolls.
• The only new sector emerging is the knowledge sector,
made up of elite entrepreneurs, scientists, technicians,
computer programmers, professionals, educators, and
consultants.
• While this sector is growing, it is not expected to absorb
more than a fraction of the hundreds of millions who will
be eliminated in the next several decades in the wake of
revolutionary advances in the information and
communication sciences.

9. What Skills are Now Required?
Expert Thinking:
Solving problems for which there are no rule-based solutions.
Examples :
•Diagnosing the illness of a patient whose symptoms seem
strange
•Creating a good tasting dish from the ingredients that are fresh in the market
that morning
•Repairing an auto that does not run well but that the computer diagnostics
report has no problem.
These problems require what we have called pure pattern recognition –
information processing that cannot now be programmed on a computer.
10. Complex Communication:
Interacting with humans to acquire information, to
explain it, or to persuade others of its implications for action.
Examples:
•Manager motivating the people whose work she supervises
•A sales person gauging a customer’s reaction to a piece of clothing,
•A biology teacher explaining how cells divide,
•An engineer describing why a new design for a DVD player is an advance over previous
designs.
11. Routine Cognitive Tasks.
Mental tasks that are well described by deductive or
inductive rules.
Examples:
• Maintaining expense reports
•Filing new information provided by insurance customers
•Evaluating applications for mortgages.
Because these tasks can be accomplished by following a set of rules,
they are prime candidates for computerization.
12. Routine Manual Tasks.
Physical tasks that can be well described using
deductive or inductive rules.
Examples:
•Installing windshields on new vehicles in automobile assembly plants
•Counting and packaging pills into containers in pharmaceutical firms.
Since these tasks can be defined in terms of a set of precise, repetitive
movements they are also candidates for computerization.
13. Non-routine Manual Tasks:
Physical tasks that cannot be well described as
following a set of If-Then-Do rules because they require optical recognition
and fine muscle control that have proven extremely difficult to program
computers to carry out.
Examples:
•driving a truck
•cleaning a building
•setting gems in engagement rings.
Computers do not complement human effort in carrying out most such tasks.
As a result, computerization should have little effect on the percentage of the
workforce engaged in these tasks.

16. PISA 2009 -Electronic Reading Assessment
Reading of electronic texts is becoming increasingly necessary and prevalent in
society.
PISA recognises this and has integrated the reading of electronic texts into the
PISA 2009 Reading Framework.
The Electronic Reading Assessment (ERA) is an innovative
Electronic Reading Assessment
project aiming at assessing the reading literacy of 15-year-olds using electronic
texts.
It is an international option in PISA 2009. ERA is a 30-minute test using existing
school IT infrastructure.
