“One of the earliest explicitly anarchist manifestos, Anselme Bellegarrigue's 1850 Anarchist Manifesto, which the author self-published in his journal l'Anarchie: Journal de l'Ordre (Anarchy: A Journal of Order), states that authority is the source of all social disorder; therefore, the absence of central authority promotes social harmony. Written during a period of intense political upheaval in France, the manifesto was published in Paris after the establishment of the Second Republic in 1848 but before the 1851 coup that ushered in the Second Empire.
