The Earth's atmosphere consists of five layers, starting from the thickest at the surface and thinning out into space. Each layer has distinct characteristics, with the troposphere where weather occurs, the stratosphere with stable flying conditions for aircrafts and ozone protection, the mesosphere where meteors burn up, the thermosphere with auroras, and the exosphere marking the boundary with space. Understanding and preserving the atmosphere is vital for life on Earth.

2. The Atmosphere: The atmosphere is divided into five layers. It is thickest near the surface and thins out with height until it eventually merges with space. The atmosphere like the ocean currents helps moderate extreme temperatures, thereby making it livable on Earth. The Earth’s atmosphere is about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and the rest of the 1% is made up of other gases. Carbon dioxide is between 0.01- 0.1% and water vapor is between 0- 7%. There is also between 0 -0.01% of ozone.

3. The Troposphere is the first layer above the surface of the Earth and contains half of its atmosphere. Weather occurs in this layer. The Stratosphere is the layer where many jets and aircrafts fly since it is a lot more stable. And the presence of the Ozone helps in absorbing most of the harmful rays (ultraviolet) from the sun and converts this into heat. The Mesosphere is where most meteors or rock fragments burn up before they even had the chance to reach the Earth’s surface. The Thermosphere is the layer with auroras (or simply northern and southern lights). This is also where space shuttle orbits. Beyond the thermosphere is what is known as the Exosphere, which is the upper limit of the atmosphere. And this is where the atmosphere also merges with space. .
