2. The Internet
In this modern age, multimedia plays a vital role in education in schools. Multimedia
is defined as several different methods of communication or forms of expression. One of A
multimedia’s branches is the Internet which was invented in 1969. The Internet has made a AA
difference in many lives around the world. Websites and emails, things that were unheard A
two decades ago, are quickly gaining in popularity and usage. Bill Gates, the creator of AA
Microsoft, has created a mountain of softwares to enchance the capabilities of a computer AAA
which means stress-free web surfing. A
Internet connects a network of computers. There are a number of ways to do this. P1
Examples are Local Area Network (LAN) and wireless connection. Sharing the same network E1 E1
allows the computers to share information and functions. LAN is used in most cyber cafes E1 E1
where friends can compete with each other in a game. On the other hand, wireless E1
connection is usually used at home. This is because one is able to access internet from any E1
place in the house. Thus the Internet has benefited the people as it allows sharing of E1
information as well as making new associations and communications. E1 E1
Internet receives and sends information with web browsers. Examples of web P2
browsers are Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Most websites’ web address starts with E2 E2
www which stands for world wide web. People can create websites on anything, legal or E2 E2
illegal. One could find facts for knowledge and education on websites such as wikipedia.org. E2
One could also upload or download a fairly large amount of data from websites. E2 E2
Internet is also used for leisure. One could watch movies without paying a single P3 E3
cent. One could watch videos online at websites such as Youtube. Furthermore, E3 E3
downloading music and videos are also possible using the internet. Now, there is no need E3
to withdraw a large sum of money to buy albums and DVDs which are normally quite E3 E3
expensive. E3
Nowadays, one could do on-line banking all thanks to the internet. This is one
example of e-commerce. Paying bills would not be a hassle anymore as one could do it from P4 E4
home. Shopping too, would be very convenient. One could sell things on the internet on E4 E4 E4
websites such as eBay and lelong. E-commerce certainly has reduced the time taken for E4 E4
customers to pay their bills. They also will be able to avoid the traffic jams. E4
Those who crave for knowledge could get additional educational input and in depth P5
information on anything they desire. Wikepedia.org is an example of websites that has the E5 E5
sole purpose of enriching people’s lives with knowledge. Students could also do excercises E5
on the internet to further increase their understanding of a topic. E5 E5
Social networking by internet allows easier communication. One could get P6
aquianted with people around the world. They are also able to chat with their friends and E6 E6
relatives without any disturbance. It is said that it takes 6 people to form a link that E6 E6
connects everyone in the world. This is called six degrees of separation or the human web. E6 E6
This helps when you have the internet by your side.
Storing data systematically is made possible with the internet. Hundred gigabytes of
files would consume the space of a floor in library. However, in a computer, a few gigabytes E7
is only a fraction of space in a hard disk. One could save files in a hard disk and categorize E7 E7
them in folders which can be searched easily. In addition, bookmarking can also be made E7 E7
possible through this systematic data storage. Bookmarking is a programme where alist of P7
interesting web pages are stored by the browser for the users to look up later. E7 E7
Internet brings commucational oppurtunities. E-mails can be sent to people around P8 E8
the globe. Instant messaging or chatting too, can be used to communicate with people E8 E8
around the world. One could be in Malaysia while a friend in Australia is able to chat with E8
him via the Internet. E8
3. However, there are some dangers of using the internet. Some websites attack our
computer’s system by sending spam and viruses. Spam and viruses corrupt files in the P9
computer. Spams or pop-ups are also used for unwanted advertisement. They are usually E9 E9
found in our mail inbox and regularly spams are labelled as junk mail. There are also other E9 E9
breed of programmes quite similar to viruses which are spyware and malware. Although E9 E9
these spyware and malware are not dangerous, they invade our privacy. Accessing the E9
Internet without protection of an anti-virus programme or firewall is a sure way of getting E9 E9
infected. The result of infection varies from a simple obscene message on the screen to the E9 E9
complete erasure of the files and records in the computer. E9
People get addicted to the internet because of various reasons. Games are one of P10
them. Online games are addictive because of the lust to become the best player in the E10 E10
world. Online game creators target teenagers as at this stage their mind is set to do E10
everything that is considered fun. Internet addiction may lead to students playing truants. E10 E10
Porn is also addictive. Some people watch porn to deal with stress. Others watch porn just E10 E10
because it is considered fun to them. E10
Internet also contains offensive materials. Some people write blogs and spread P12 E12
wrong ideology to the readers. People would probably feel offended towards porn because E12 E12
it is degrading. Some write about racism. Phrases such as ‘illegal immigrants’ and ‘nigger’ E12 E12
are offensive to some. E12
Internet also brings the hazard of invasion of privacy. Hackers steal pictures and edit P13 E13
them using software such as Adobe Photoshop and post them online. Some would even E13 E13
blackmail the owner as a source of income. Hackers hack webcams and peep on the owner E13 E13
without the owners realizing a thing. They also hack computers to corrupt them. E13 E13
People who often use the internet are susceptible to possible health hazards. One P14
could get eye strain because they do not blink when staring at the monitor. They could also E14 E14
get eye damage because the monitor emit harmful rays to the eyes. Long hours of working E14
with computers bring stress to the users. Prolong use of computers would lead to headache E14 E14
and migraine. In addition, long hours of sitting may lead to obesity problem. E14 E14
Mobile phone users may also experience mobile phone risks when using the P11
Internet function in the phone. The mobile phone can be invaded by viruses through E11
massive downloading from the internet. Mobile phone users normally download songs E11 E11
from the internet. Infected mobile phone will eventually become malfunction which might E11
cost wastage to the users. E11
Internet users are prone to exploitations and scams. This is one of the most P15
common Internet frauds. A person might receive an e-mail that he thinks comes from his E15 E15
bank asking for his bank account number. This of course will lead to devastating financial E15
consequence when he gives his sensitive information such as his bank account number or E15 E15
his credit card details. E15 E15
In conclusion, using the Internet is no different from dealing with our daily lives in
the physical world. We use it but at the same time we take precautions to avoid the obvious A
dangers and negative elements in it.
