The Importance Of Silence In Human Interaction
Silence in human interaction is an extremely complex construct. Silence can have numerous
conceptual meanings ranging from complete acceptance to complete rejection. It can be an
indication of a person's pace of thought or understanding (Johannesen, 1974; Tannen, 1993). As a
communicative vehicle, silence carries a hidden component in every verbalisation (Zeligs, 1953).
Before we can consider its' effects on the recipient, we first need to put context to the specific
interpretation of silence with regards to this study. In this case we are examining the effect on the
interviewer as a recipient in a suspect interview.
Silence is commonly associated with punishment and negative behaviour. When children
misbehave, they are told to sit in silence on the naughty step. The 'silent treatment' is a subtle form
of ostracism, where the lack of communicative engagement is used to express disapproval and
punishment. Silence has the power to create a sense of discomfort and can be used as a sign of
displeasure by its user (Landers, 2017). It is regarded as a power tactic (Falbo and Peplau, 1980;
Kipnis, 1984). Leonardo da Vinci said of silence, "nothing strengthens authority so much as
silence". When Gottman (1979, 1980) categorised disengagement behaviours present in damaged
relationships, the 'silent treatment' featured as a sub–category. It is used by young children as a form
of control (Asher and Coie, 1990; Barner–Barry, 1986; Cairns and Cairns, 1991), and as a form of
rejection

Similes In Lord Of The Flies
Lord of the flies, a novel written by author William Golding, is about group of british school boys,
flying on a airplane, are shot down onto a uncivilized island. Their goal throughout the book is to
survive while staying civilized without turning into savages. Golding's book, Lord of the Flies, is
centered on how the children turn into savages. He uses metaphor to help the reader see how the
children are turning into savages. Especially the main characters Jack and Ralph. For setting he uses
simile and personification to help the readers what the setting of the book is. The setting of Lord of
the Flies is based on an uncivilized island. Golding uses simile and personification to get the reader

Alice Paul Thesis
Suffragist Alice Paul got transferred out of the psychopathic ward of Washington, and being force
fed. During her toil Alice Paul said, "Why not let this miserable creature starve. The country would
be much better off without her and the balance of her gang of pickets."(Dismore 1). Alice Paul went
on this immense hunger strike for her six companions. She wanted to give her six companions better
food. She threatened to kill herself of starvation. She was very determined, she was force fed
multiple times, but she cared so much for her companion that she didn't give up. Amidst her hunger
strike she and her companions were put into solitary confinement inside a tiny cell with boarded up
windows. All this shows Alice Paul will never give up and she spoke with her actions not her words.
Reason 2 Throughout her life Alice Paul fought hard against president Woodrow Wilson. She put up
banners. Did silent protesting in front of the White House. Throughout this she endured mant many
things. She endured many things. She had to stay in one house for 2 days due to public outrage
when she showed a "Kaiser Wilson" banner to a Russian person going into the White House. In
Alice Paul it says, "They returned every day, in good weather and bad, ... Show more content on

She did countless things to pass an amendment which would grant the women their wish of being
able to have their rights. Including a hunger strike, a silent protest, and she even endured force
feeding. In Alice Paul it says, "For five months the White House siege continued; while Congress
refused to act without word from the president." (William and Mary Lavender 4). This shows the
frustration that she had to go through, and how much the government seemed stubborn. She never
gave up despite knowing the fact that president Wilson wouldn't budge. In the end she was able to
convince president Wilson. She never even married. If that doesn't show her devotion I don't know

Surprised by Joy and William Blake’s poem, The Sick Rose...
William Wordsworth's poem titled "Surprised by Joy" and William Blake's poem, "The Sick Rose"
employs a range of poetic techniques to highlight the pain that love can create. On the other hand,
John Clare's poem titled "First Love" and Robert Burns's poem, "A Red, Red Rose" contrastingly
explore the theme of love as a positive to be celebrated. William Wordsworth's poem titled
"Surprised by Joy" is a sonnet which uses simile, personification, metaphor, emotive language and a
question to highlight the pain love can create. The poet uses the simile "impatient as the wind" to
emphasize the fact that life is like the wind, it comes and goes as it pleases. In this case, the "wind"
is used as a symbol for 'life'. "Silent tomb" is a personification which shows that his love, being his
daughter, is dead and cannot respond to him. The metaphor "have I been so beguiled as to be blind"
is used to highlight the grief and pain his daughter's death has caused him. "Grievous love" is an
emotive language which is used to show how much heartache and misery love can bring us when it
is lost. The question "how could I forget thee?" is used in this poem to stress the importance of his
memories of his deceased daughter which being the only thing that he has of her. The poet
successfully expresses his opinion on how much pain love can create through his use of various
poetic techniques. Similarly, William Blake's poem, "The Sick Rose" uses personification,
symbolism, oxymoron and rhyme to

Film Analysis Of Sunset Boulevard
Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder features some very legendary and prominent actors as
well as directors which helps make this film and instant classic. What makes this movie so unique is
that there are both actors and directors in the movie who play themselves. The film stars notable
actors and actresses such as Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Buster Keaton, Hedda Hopper, and
Anna Q. Nilsson. It also features two very prominent directors, Erich von Stroheim and the
infamous Cecil B. DeMille. The actors and actresses seemed to be made for these roles and help turn
this movie into a classic. The over the top acting done by Gloria Swanson, the overly, flamboyant
setting, and the musical score by Franz Waxman all help contribute to make this film a classic.
Sunset Boulevard stars Gloria Swanson who plays a washed up silent movie star (Norma Desmond)
which was not too much of a far stretch for her since she had in fact been a silent movie star back in
her heyday. It also stars William Holden who plays a has–been writer down on his luck (Joe Gillis)
who just happens to land himself in Norma Desmond's home. While sidetracked at her home, Joe
decides to help her redo the script she had written. She offers him a place to stay while helping her
with her script, he reluctantly agrees. She falls for him and the feeling isn't exactly mutual but he
realizes that being a kept man might not be such a bad gig. It is clear that they both need one

The Silent Scene In Hamlet And William Shakespeare's Hamlet
Shakespeare was an intelligent man, he wrote characters with ideas in his mind of how they should
be played, some directors and actors do not respect that. In a comparison of three different film
adaptations of the play Hamlet, the famous "To be or not to be" speech is often butchered and
destroyed with no respect for the original material. Music, scenery, and acting are are vital to the
scene and how viewers may understand and appreciate the work and characters in it. Often
neglected, it is up to watchers to decide whether or not the work was enjoyable, there are many
reasons for those opinions to sway in a certain direction. Olivier, Tennant, and Branagh all had their
take at the scene, and in comparison, only one managed to impress and match the stature of the
original text. Olivier's portrayal of the "To be or not to be" soliloquy was utterly atrocious. With the
age of the film taken into consideration, it still manages to fail at nearly every aspect and disappoint
as much as possible. The strongest point, which in comparison is not strong at all, would have to be
the music and sound or lack thereof. The silence definitely is akin to Hamlet's depression and his
quiet speaking is attempting to add to that though failing miserably. A quiet scene is something
which can definitely add the feeling of a character's struggle when done correctly which this was
not, leading to an awkwardly quiet scene. The film starts to degrade even further with the scenery.

How Does Giles Corey Tell The Truth In The Crucible
"And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free."– John 8:32.. The Crucible is all about
telling the truth. In the play no one wants to stand up and fight for what's right. The few people who
are courageous and tell the truth are punished for it. When first reading the Crucible the only thing
that comes to mind is the witch trials, but when looking closer it focuses on courage, weakness and
truth. It's easy to stand with the crowd, it takes courage to stand alone. Giles Corey is one person
who stands alone. He fights for his wife and brings sensible evidence to the court. He tries to explain
the lies of the girls and save his wife, but the court won't have it. He is pressed for having courage
and standing up for the truth. John

How do William Blake and William Wordsworth respond to...
How do William Blake and William Wordsworth respond to nature in their poetry? The Romantic
Era was an age, which opened during the Industrial
(1800–1900) and French Revolution (1789). These ages affected the romantic poets greatly by
disrupting and polluting nature. Before the
Industrial Revolution, William Blake wrote about Songs of Innocence.
He also wrote Songs of Experience but after the Industrial
Revolution. William Wordsworth, on the other hand, continued on an optimistic route and ignored
the Industrial Revolution in his poems.
He instead wrote about nature only and its beauty. Previous Augustan poets were more controlled
and rule governed. They were also concerned with order.
In Blake's 'London', he describes the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wordsworth talks about the mind being free and relaxed, "Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!"
The adjective
'deep' shows how immense the tranquility is. It also shows how the poem is personal, "Ne'er saw I."
He sets the scene in the morning, creating a feeling of calmness and peace, "The beauty of the
morning; silent, bare." The noun 'beauty' implies splendor and magnificence, showing the opposite
of what Blake writes about 'London'. The adjective 'silent' is also the opposite of what Blake writes
in
'London', "How the youthful Harlot's curse". Wordsworth mentions the daffodils as people, "When
all at once I saw a crowd." Similarly, he uses personification, 'crowd', to imply that everyone is
unified in nature. He uses color in his poem to indicate a deeper meaning, "A host, of golden
daffodils." The adjective "golden" illustrates purity as well, therefore connecting it to innocence.
The noun 'host' has a slight religious tone, which also relates to purity. 'The Daffodils' has eight
syllables in each line. This makes the poem seem more complex than 'Spring'.
In 'Spring', a lively tone is repeated throughout the poem,"Merrily, merrily we welcome in the year."
The adverb 'merrily' is repeated to highlight the positive tone of the poem and to make it last longer.
The pronoun 'we welcome in the year' also shows us how everyone is unified in nature. Blake uses
colour to expand the meaning of the sentence, "Come and

A Peace Stand For Peace : A Peaceful Stand For Peace
A Peaceful Stand For Peace In this age acts of violence are still going on around the world. We're
being labeled on who we are and attacked because of that, but, now people, groups, and organization
are starting to take a stand. Just like Martin Luther King Jr., Mary Lease, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa
Parks, and all the other leaders who stood up and fought for what they believed and sent a ripple
effect throughout the country we as a nation must stand up and follow their example and stop all
violent acts that are still going on across the nation. " Every step toward the goal of justice requires
sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless externation and passionate concern of dedicated
individuals." ( "Martin") We must work to reach our goal of equality and peace and we only reach
these goals together. However, today everyone is being labeled and labeling is stopping us from
coming together and stopping a major issue, racism. " Who we truly are is not skin deep." (
"Williams") During the 1960's African Americans were kept away from white kids because of their
skin color and now throughout the world races are being judged because of their skin color. Some
people aren't even able to get jobs because of their skin color still in the world. " Who would you be
if the world never gave you labels?" ( "Williams") Have you ever thought who you would be if not

Problematic Decisions In The Novel Crabbe, By William Bell
Throughout one's teenage years, one is forced with many difficult and problematic decisions. In the
novel Crabbe, Franklin Crabbe is a troubled teenager who runs away from home to live in a forest
on his own. He ruins the dream that his parents have for him because he feels that they expect too
much from him. He is always told how to live and how to think but by running away he does not
have to trust anyone nor maintain a relationship with anyone. In the novel Crabbe, William Bell
develops the idea that trust issues and bad relationships, lead to bad lifestyle choices. This is shown
through Crabbe's alcohol abuse and how he depends on it, how Crabbe acts on impulse and how he
acts before he thinks, and through Crabbe's poor personal morals ... Show more content on

For example, he always acts before he thinks. He says, "I felt good on the long journey North, sort
of free" (Bell 38). He may have felt free in that very moment, but he forgot to think about the future.
Crabbe did not know if running away would really solve his problems because it is the same thing as
running away from your problems. He also says, "Well, I was almost happy" (Bell 38). Crabbe did
not even know if this would make him happy in the long run. Crabbe has trust issues and bad
relationships because of the way he acts with others. For example, when he is in sessions with Dr.
Browne, he says the first thing that comes to his head. He replies, ' "Oh, don't worry, Fa – er, Doctor,
I don't inhale the smoke," I almost blew it that time" ' (Bell 12). This proves that he is acting and
that he is almost completely oblivious to what he is telling Dr. Browne. This is proving why trust
issues and why bad relationships lead to bad lifestyle decisions because if he does not open up, all
his emotions and feelings will be bottled up inside, and he will continue to act impulsively. He may
even run away again, who

Comparing The Metaphors Of London By William Blake And...
During the 18th century, London was not charming, clean, and astounding, at least that's what
William Blake thought. William Blake and William Wordsworth, poets of the romantic period, wrote
poems about London. These two poets expressed how they felt about London about how it was at
the time. Blake and Wordsworth create an image in a reader's mind of how they saw London,
Blake's image being dim and Wordsworth's image is brighter. Blake viewed London as an awful
place, and Wordsworth viewed London as a cheerful place. Blake and Wordsworth used metaphors,
a setting, and they call attention to the classes of the people to get their message to readers.

Both poets describe what they see and hear in London. Blakes setting is more depressing and
gloomy, and Wordsworth setting is happier and brighter. "In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;/
Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!" (10–11). Wordsworth is stating London is so calm and nice
as he looks out onto the silent town. "In every cry of every man,/ In every Infant's cry of fear,/ In
every voice, in every ban,/ The mind–forg'd manacles I hear." (5–8). Blake is stating London is
horrible, as he hears cries down every street he walks through. Wordsworth creates an image in a
reader's mind, an image that says London is great, beautiful, clean, calm, quiet, and dazzling. A nice
morning, standing on the bridge looking out and seeing a peaceful town asleep. Green swaying grass
and the smooth, warm sun on a face as another day a comes. Another example is if Wordsworth was
painting what he saw. He would have used bright, warm colors with soft strokes. On the other hand,
Blake creates an image that yells London is horrible. "But most, through midnight streets I hear"
(13). Blake was ambling the streets at night, giving the image even more of a depressing place.
Looking into the streets, a dirty, dark street, with cracks and loose rocks. With people crying and
struggling to live another day in the cruel town. Painting wise, Blake would have used dark colors
with harsh strokes. These are two different settings a reader can pick up from

this intrigues the reader by peeking their curiosity into what that conflict may be. In the passage it

How Did Rachel Carson Use To Change The World
When the Pen Was Mightier Than the Sword: Rachel Carson's Use of Prose to Change the World
The famous author and ecologist, Rachel Carson, singlehandedly managed to start an environmental
movement with the power of her writing. The sharp contrast of the beauty that she described and the
disaster that was happening prompts many a reader to take up arms and defend the world that they
live in. Rachel used her writing talent to emphasize the contrast between how the world used to be
and what it had and will become. Her powerful words created images within the readers minds of
the horrors to come if nothing happens, by giving us glances of what had already happened. In her
revolutionary book Silent Spring, the beauty of her prose juxtaposed by the evil of her topic makes
the book extraordinary. Her use of beautiful descriptions of the natural world contrast with the
destruction that pesticides can cause. It makes us realize that the world around us truly is beautiful
but can be destroyed easily. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

after her father death "Now she too would know the old thrill and the old despair of a penny more or

living within the household, without a husband and a job she very well could have been without a

ate Grenville's best selling 2005 book The Secret River, directed by Neil Armfield and adapted by

While Bovell maintains that William Thornhill is still central to the play, he has been deliberate in
giving voice to the silent characters of the book.
Factual research is interweaved with fictional drama in Grenville's novel, revealing the shocking
history, yet building a story around it. Part of the unfolding tragedy of the book and now the play is
the sense that both convey, of how history could have been different. Thornhill charges in seeing the
land as "the blank page in which a man might write a new life" but for the Aboriginal's it has always
been their land, so they are torn on what to do. It is the shocking, unexpected truth that leaves the
audience so silent you could hear a pin drop. Throughout the play there is brutal enslavement and
repeated rape of young aboriginal woman (played courageously by a naked Miranda Tapsell).
Smasher Sullivan (a rascally Jeremy Sims) commits these crimes, which are ignored and William
Thornhill (Nathaniel Dean) carelessly turns a blind eye to them.
Interestingly The Secret River is Andrew Upton and Cate Blanchett's very first commission for

production line for this play has been massive and unequalled.

popular monuments to the Confederacy such as Stone Mountain, and monuments to General Lee,
Jefferson Davis, and Nathan Forrest. Now even lesser memorials such as Silent Sam have also come

Life In The Iron Mills Summary
Rebecca Harding Davis's story "Life in the Iron Mills" is considered one of the first fictional novels
to use realism and bring to life a delineated lower class and issues relevant to women. Encouraging
social reform for working class women–as well blacks and immigrants–Davis employs a harsh
concrete description of poor living conditions within the mills, workers' homes, and for the workers
themselves. Whereas the meaning of class and social division has changed throughout time,
Raymond Williams entry "Class" will be taken into consideration throughout this essay and create
for an accurate definition of class among social division that correlates into the mills fictional
setting. This essay will include Davis's vivid illustration of class separation and argue for social
change among women, immigrants, and the alienated working class that are unable to escape life in
Antebellum America. The story of "Life in the Iron Mills" begins with describing Hugh Wolfe, an
immigrant mill hand whose differences separate himself from his faceless colleagues of the mill
before he makes an appearance. The main narrative of the story starts with Hugh's cousin Deborah
Wolfe; third–person narrative creates an opening depiction of Deborah as she stumbles home at 11
o'clock from a tiring shift in the iron mills. Williams choice of third person narrative to begin the
story in doing so reveals Deborah's "weak, wretch [having] some stimulant in her pale life to keep
her up, some love or hope, it

Essay Tough Love in William Shakespeare’s play, Othello
In William Shakespeare's tragic play, Othello, Desdemona asserts, "'wouldst thou do such a deed for
all the world?'" (4.3.76). During a friendly banter, Desdemona asks Emilia this very question; would
she cheat on her husband to help him become monarch and have power over all the world? She
quietly replies that she would only in secret, but only for her husband's own good. This question
plays an essential role throughout Othello because Emilia is first accused of cheating on her
husband. Additionally, she is obsequious towards Iago because of her female role and responsibility
as a wife. As a result of being so obedient, she later steals the highly valued handkerchief because
her husband desired it. Shakespeare utilizes Emilia to portray ... Show more content on

Additionally, Emilia's adverse view on marriage and her husband matches Iago's unfavorable view
on women and marriage being less than enjoyable. Demonstrating her disregard for marriage,
Emilia declares, "'they are all but stomachs, and we all but food; they eat us hungerly, and when they
are full, they belch us'" (3.4.104–60. By saying this, she is showing knowledge and experience with
the relations of men and women and the cruel manner they treat each other. Emilia verbalizes how
men only use women to get what they desire, and disregard them when they cannot be expended to
any further extent. In the play, Iago uses Emilia to seize Desdemona's handkerchief, his treasured
article of Desdemona's as a gift of love from Othello. After gaining possession of the handkerchief,
he wants to present evidence of Othello's wife cheating on him. The final result of the stolen
handkerchief is death of multiple people including Emilia, Desdemona, and Iago. Emilia's thoughts

Wings
Wings The film I watched was available on Netflix. Wings is a 1927 silent film produced by Lucien
Hubbard and directed by William Wellman. This film was popular in the late 1920s because its was
one of first kind of its genre. Wings was more of a dramatic type movie with little components of a
slapstick film. Mise–en–scene was a major part of the movie because Wings was a silent film.
Wings was the first film of many things, including awards and filming techniques. Wings was a
popular movie because of the aviation type movie. This fit in the 1920s era because of World War 1.
World War 1 started in 1914 and ended in 1918 allowing the story to be based of the war. However,

There were parts in the movie that were meant to be humourous. The movie starts off with a young
man working on his car, having funny slapstick components. However, throughout the movie the
characters become more involved and serious. Because of the long film this was built up seamlessly.
The movie also incorporates a love story in it. As the movie progresses one of the main characters
show the idea that he "won't make it". This later than is followed through and is accidentally killed
by his friend. This was a peak in the movie as a dramatic genre movie. At the end his goes on to fall
in love with a women that liked him, which would a mix of a dramatic/love film. One of the main
features with Wings is it is a silent war film. Props and cinematography were emphasized.
Throughout the movie props were used to tell a story with each item having a significant meaning.
The composition of the film outstanding. It provided the viewers at the time the experiences in war.
The producer and directors did not skimp on sets. Sets were played on the military base providing
the realism to the film. Many extras and pilots provided visual on how enormous the war was. There

Mr. Williams And The Music Of Music And Film
John Williams once said "so much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by
ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories" – and
linger it did. Mr. Williams has made significant contributions to the arts of music and film. To fully
understand the gravity of his achievements and their affect on humanity, we must first look at the
progression of sound in film; the effect music has in film and its audience; and lastly his
accomplishments of music and film.
In the infancy of film, movies were silent but not without sound. To make film a more pleasant
experience, music was provided to cover up the ambient noise of the projector and help create an
agreeable atmosphere, often by the use of a solo piano. (Fischoff, S. (2005)). The musician generally
improvised – playing mostly a variety of popular romantic and melodramatic scores of the late
nineteenth century (such as William Tell Overture, Ride of the Valkyrie, Les Preludes, etc.) – as long
as it accompanied the action/scene or enhanced the mood (for dramatic effect). ("From Scene to
Shining Screen: A Short History of Film Music". para. 1–2. (n.d.)). As film grew in popularity and
length, so did the musical accompaniment – adding instruments to the ensemble until even some
theaters were housing full orchestras. By the end of the silent era, the industry had completely
shifted from the all purpose "improve" music of the solo pianist, to exact musical scores written

Persuasive Essay About False Confessions
Almost everyone who has seen a cop television show or movie has heard the saying "You have the
right to remain silent". In America, people are raised to believe that the justice system never fails,
and that no matter what happens justice will always prevail, though for some people this safety net
has failed them. Since the late 1980s six studies have documented 250 interrogation–induced false
confessions. Police–induced false confessions are the result of multistep process and sequence of
influence, persuasion, and compliance. Imagine that a solider of the U.S. military is brought in for
questioning, kept locked up for sixteen hours in an interrogation room, constantly threatened with
the death penalty if they did not confess to the crime, and the whole time left without representation.
In 1997 this was the case for four individuals from Norfolk, Virginia held without representation and
forced to give false confessions. On July 8, 1997, William Bosko, an enlisted sailor returns home
from a week at sea to find his wife Michelle Moore–Bosko gruesomely murdered in their apartment.
Detectives interview family, friends and neighbors of the couple before asking their next–door
neighbor Danial Williams to come in for questioning. Danial Williams is interrogated for the next 11
hours by detectives Maureen Evans and Robert Glenn Ford before confessing to the murder of
Michelle Bosko. Even though neither his story of what happened, or his DNA matched the evidence
that the police had

Analyzing The Origins Of The Dutch Armies And Its First...
Countermarching is the military maneuver in which rows of infantry take turns advancing and firing
upon an enemy, only to be replaced by the rank behind them which had already reloaded. The
maneuver would allow ranks of infantry to establish a constant base of fire while involving a greater
proportion of rifle bearing soldiers at a single given time. The deadly practice saw its first
applications in late 16th century Japan and later developed independently in the midst of the Dutch
Revolt in Western Europe. Western European countermarch stemmed from humble and classical
origins, but would grow to be the status quo used by every major military power in Europe by the
end of the 17th century. To fully grasp the importance of this development, ... Show more content on

During the siege of Middleburg in 1572, the Spanish implemented water defenses that prevented any
the effective use of siege equipment by the Dutch. The Spanish also exploited their competitive
advantage in open combat away from Dutch waterways, and in open combat crushed Louis of
Nassau's army at Mook on the 14th of April 1574. Fighting between the army of Flanders, which
had just under 100,000 men by the end of 1580. The combination of Dutch Naval superiority and the
Army of Flanders superiority on the ground meant that no meaningful victory could be achieved.
The wars remained costly for both governments with the Spanish defaulting on war debts in 1575,
but with the dutch unable to exploit their sudden advantage because of a tired and ineffective
military. In order to finally reunite the low countries, newly appointed Maurice of Nassau would
have to embark on a series of military reforms that could see influence expanded into the landlocked
south, away from the comfort of the ocean and waterways of the north.
Early military reformers had a great deal of difficulty reforming the status quo, as military generals
and members of the intellectual community demonstrated a great deal of inertia. As military thinkers
and philosophers began to explore newly translated ancient texts, they ran into a great deal of
intellectual backlash. In a particularly potent example, Thomas Digges, an Englishmen who served
in the armies of the Dutch republic, writes in his

The Sentimentality Of William Tavener
The story "The sentimentality of William Tavener" is a story about a father's reluctance to allow his
sons to go to a fair. The plot of the story consists of three main parts: the introduction of characters,
the development through conversation, and the resolution that develops from the conversation.
Close to the exposition of the story, Hester has a monologue that includes many details about the
two main characters. Hester is described as a caring mother urging her strict husband to introduce
mild lenience, while William is given the silent air of authority and power over the family. Hester's
initial character strongly fights for her sons' rights to go to the fair, as seen in paragraph three.
Describing Hester's unrelenting manner is

Richard's heart fluttered in relief when he heard Lexi's familiar voice, and he fixated his gaze on the
silhouette that appeared at the second–floor window, before the Heiress herself appeared. The nerves
that had strained his mind and body all day, loosened, and he began to shake at the sight of Lexi,

Dear Silent Partners Of Chocoholics Anonymous
Dear silent partners of Chocoholics Anonymous,
The purpose of this memo is to discuss the opposing views of shareholders and stakeholders,
evaluating our decision based on multiple ethical principles, focusing on Chocoholics Anonymous
profitability and ethical integrity.
Chocoholics Anonymous has a decline of sales and decrease of profits during the economic
downturn, and so do the other companies in town; and those companies fired employees to save
money which caused a rapidly growing unemployment rate. In order to control the increasing of
unemployment rate, the local economic development group cautioned local firms, in attempts to
lower layoffs, and the internal managers of Chocoholics Anonymous now has a conflict about the
decision to keep or fire a full–time manager. By discussing and analyzing the different views of
shareholders (silent partners) and stakeholders (employees), in addition to acknowledging
government recommendations, it will be clear for Chocoholics Anonymous to make an applicable
and ethical decision.
When encountering the decision of Chocoholics Anonymous, silent partners voiced their greatest
concern, which was to guarantee and maximize profits; however, based on current corporate culture,
making decisions using the shareholder's view will be harmful to the company. The silent partners,
who are the shareholders in the company, believe they are most socially responsible when
maximizing profits, for this shares the maximum wealth from their company.

The Silent Partners And The Social Responsibility Model Of...
Novel Ideas' silent partners have numerous concerns with public officials calling off layoffs
including the hindrance of economic performance, an increase in insolvency, and an inability to
maximize company profits.. We realize that the principal motive is to maximize profits. As investors
in our company, we understand why the silent partners tend to agree with the social responsibility
model of Milton Friedman. The silent partners, like Mr. Friedman, feel as if we need to utilize our
resources and engage in activities that diminish the economic volatility our company is facing
(Crawford, 9/20). A primary concern is to do whatever it takes to maintain the company's solvency,
while adhering and staying within any legal boundaries. Another concern the silent partners may
have is the social responsiveness strategy that the officials from the local chamber of commerce and
local economic development group want us to utilize. The local organizations want us to avoid
layoffs, so the community can maintain economic stability. However, we know that the silent
partners are concerned that if we do not fire one of the full–time employees, we will not be
maximizing our profits, and again increasing the economic volatility of our business. As the silent
partners have mentioned, firing one of the full–time employees would not be of concern as we
would save money, increase profits, and still maintain a satisfactory level of customer service.
However, many would categorize our strategy as

What Are The Characteristics Of The Dutch Republic
In this time, the Dutch Republic will let you publish any book and will let anyone say what they
think no matter if it is against the government or anyone or anything. That is a trait of the Dutch
Republic that no other country would let that happen, they will probably kill the person that
published a controversial book if anyone did so out of the Dutch republic. The Dutch are also very
open to new ideas and opinions, like the ideas that the Earth orbits the Sun and that the Earth is
round. Also the Dutch really like painting, science and basically learning, they are open to any idea
and will try to come up with their own ideas too and try to help each other with their ideas. They are

Also there are lots of artists like the Golden Boy Rembrandt and lots more, but a very big difference
between our artists and the artists in France is that our artists can paint for more people not only the
church, they could paint for the Regenten or for people with enough money to pay them, of course
that doesn't assure you to become some kind of superstar for appearing in a Rembrandt painting
because you might not appear in the front or even be seen. The Dutch Republic is also widely
known for the smartness and intelligence of the Dutch and their people, they most probably have a
very high IQ :). They are very smart because they really like learning and they learn a lot and their
intelligence and open mindedness makes them learn faster and more things in the same time as other
people might learn half what they learn in the same time because they are really open minded and
they are also very intelligent and creative. Also people really like each other in the Dutch Republic

A Short Story : A Story?
The massive hills were vibrant, a hue of light moss and shimmering that the two youth began to
tumble down its towering structures with thunderous laughs that boomed through the small village
nearby. "I think we've angered my mother again, haven't we?", the first one said, a soft feminine
sound. She turned to her companion, her most faithful and loyal friend in the entire world. He was
brushing away tiny pieces of grass and grime from the wrinkled black cloth of his knees. He glanced
to her when he realized there was no point in his actions; he looked filthy. A grin stretched itself
across his lips when he saw that she appeared even more horrid than he. Her already worn gown was
disastrous, covered in wet soil and patches of smut. He watched as she attempted to remove dirt
from her auburn hair and clicked his tongue loud enough that she huffed and threw her arms down
in frustration. "I am in no state to face her shouts." Sighing, she began a slow walk back to their
cottage, a compact house ready to collapse at any given moment. "William?" He gave her a low
grumble in response, his long black hair wet and greasy with substances unknown. "Where's your
father? At the whorehouse again?"
His shoulders fell a little rigid but he nodded. "Most definitely for the rest of the night." The girl
clapped her hands enthusiastically.
"Mother won't yell if you're staying with me. How quaint. We can stay late too, mind you." She
rambled until they reached home. Unfortunately, an older woman

Stafford takes the time to let the reader think and analyze the questions asked in the first seven lines.
In lines 9 and 10 he says that "You and I can turn and look at the silent river and wait" (Stafford).
But if you remember in the first line the river is ice so it's not only silent but calm, it's not moving at
all. "The speaker in the poem chooses not to discuss "whether/ what I have done is my life" until the
river is ice" (Anderson).I think that he uses the time of winter to wait for the river to freeze so share
his thoughts. For if the river is frozen it cannot pass on and judge his life. He follows in lines 11–13
that the river is silent but there are still currents and movement hidden under the ice. Stafford
paraphrases these lines "That river, and that world–and our lives–all share the depth and stillness of
much more significance then our talk, or intentions" (Stafford). I believe that he trying to tell (you)
the reader that no matter what you do in life or who has something to say about it the actions in
which we choose to make have more significance than we may see. In the last line Stafford says
"What the river says, that is what I say" (Stafford). Stafford uses the "ice as a protective mask within
the poem" (Anderson), not allowing any final judgment to be passed. Starting with the frozen river
in the first line Stafford gives us the ultimate life lesson hidden within life's "mistakes" that the

Rachel Carson's Silent Spring and the Beginning of the Environmental Movement in the United
States
When Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was published in 1962, it generated a storm of controversy over
the use of chemical pesticides. Miss Carson's intent in writing Silent Spring was to warn the public
of the dangers associated with pesticide use. Throughout her book are numerous case studies
documenting the harmful effects that chemical pesticides have had on the environment. Along with
these facts, she explains how in many instances the pesticides have done more harm than good in
eradicating the pests they were designed to destroy. In addition to her reports on pesticide use, Miss
Carson points out that many of the long–term effects that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Impact of Silent Spring
When excerpts of Silent Spring first began appearing in The New Yorker magazine in June 1962,
they caused an uproar and brought a "howl of indignation" from the chemical industry. Supporters
of the pesticide industry argued that her book gave an incomplete picture because it did not say
anything about the benefits of using pesticides. An executive of the American Cyanamid Company
complained, "if man were to faithfully follow the teachings of Miss Carson, we would return to the
Dark Ages, and the insects and diseases and vermin would once again inherit the earth." Chemical
manufacturers began undertaking a more aggressive public relations campaign to educate the public
on the benefits of pesticide use. Monsanto, for example, published and distributed 5,000 copies of a
brochure "parodying" Silent Spring entitled "The Desolate Year," which explained how chemical
pesticides were largely responsible for the virtual eradication of diseases such as malaria, yellow
fever, sleeping sickness, and typhus in the United States and throughout the world, and that without
the assistance of pesticides in agricultural production millions around the world would suffer from
malnutrition or starve to death (NRDC 1997).
One of the main counterarguments to Miss Carson's book expressed by the farmers, scientists, and
other supporters of the pesticide industry was that farm yields would be drastically reduced without
the assistance

Langston Hughes Poetry Analysis
Throughout history, forms of language such as, speeches, poetry, and literature, have been
strategically and efficiently utilized as a revolutionary tactic to fulfill a goal of social change. For
instance, Langston Hughes was an incredible poet in which he used his words to question the racial
division of the American society during the Harlem Renaissance. Additionally, Hughes became a
vital figure in the movement for racial equality through the use of his language. Language and more
specifically, words have the power to drive resistance because they convey a particular message and
inspire and motivate others to strive for social change. With the assistance of rhetorical techniques,
such as word choice, tone, theme, allusion, imagery, pathos, and repetition, the message is
adequately emphasized to convey the poet's idea. This, therefore, motivates others to contribute to
change. Furthermore, poetry is crucial to effectively motivate the collective majority to be involved
in resistance through the use of rhetoric. Besides Hughes, another poet named Oscar Williams wrote
a poem entitled "A Total Revolution," which was a direct response to Robert Frost's "A Semi–
Revolution," in which he argued that everyone is needed to contribute to change, not half. Williams
usage of the word "evolution" makes a definite explanation of what a semi revolution would result
to. The word "evolution" is commonly applied in the context of science to explain the gradual
development or progress of

The During The Dutch Golden Age
Portraiture During The Dutch Golden Age
The 17th century was a very successful period for the Dutch Republic, as the golden age started,
trading has increased, exploration was at its peak, and merchants were becoming very wealthy and
powerful. At this time paintings were a form of communication to express power, value, and social
class. During the golden age Dutch artists have specialized and master the genre of still life,
portraiture, scene's of everyday life, and landscape painting. Middle–class merchants and wealthy
people were the driving force for the demand of art, because "luxury was associated with power"
(De Vries). As a result people wanted to express through art their power and wealth in paintings.
Furthermore, paintings also let painters express the current fashion and luxurious lives of people.
Even though everyone interprets a painting in a very different way, portraits from the Dutch golden
age usually emphasized a certain predominant value in its paintings. Portraiture, from the Dutch
golden age, mainly focused on emphasizing, pride, power, prosperity, and idealism in its paintings.
During the 17th century, as the Dutch golden age was thriving the trading and collecting of artwork
has gained interest in people. More middle–class citizens were in larger cities for easy access to
merchandise. It was a time where Dutch trade, science, warfare, and art were the most well known
around the world. During the golden age one of the main luxury items was art, more

The Importance Of Silence In Human Interaction

  • 1. The Importance Of Silence In Human Interaction Silence in human interaction is an extremely complex construct. Silence can have numerous conceptual meanings ranging from complete acceptance to complete rejection. It can be an indication of a person's pace of thought or understanding (Johannesen, 1974; Tannen, 1993). As a communicative vehicle, silence carries a hidden component in every verbalisation (Zeligs, 1953). Before we can consider its' effects on the recipient, we first need to put context to the specific interpretation of silence with regards to this study. In this case we are examining the effect on the interviewer as a recipient in a suspect interview. Silence is commonly associated with punishment and negative behaviour. When children misbehave, they are told to sit in silence on the naughty step. The 'silent treatment' is a subtle form of ostracism, where the lack of communicative engagement is used to express disapproval and punishment. Silence has the power to create a sense of discomfort and can be used as a sign of displeasure by its user (Landers, 2017). It is regarded as a power tactic (Falbo and Peplau, 1980; Kipnis, 1984). Leonardo da Vinci said of silence, "nothing strengthens authority so much as silence". When Gottman (1979, 1980) categorised disengagement behaviours present in damaged relationships, the 'silent treatment' featured as a sub–category. It is used by young children as a form of control (Asher and Coie, 1990; Barner–Barry, 1986; Cairns and Cairns, 1991), and as a form of rejection ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Their goal throughout the book is to survive while staying civilized without turning into savages. Golding's book, Lord of the Flies, is centered on how the children turn into savages. He uses metaphor to help the reader see how the children are turning into savages. Especially the main characters Jack and Ralph. For setting he uses simile and personification to help the readers what the setting of the book is. The setting of Lord of the Flies is based on an uncivilized island. • 9. Alice Paul Thesis Suffragist Alice Paul got transferred out of the psychopathic ward of Washington, and being force fed. During her toil Alice Paul said, "Why not let this miserable creature starve. The country would be much better off without her and the balance of her gang of pickets."(Dismore 1). Alice Paul went on this immense hunger strike for her six companions. She wanted to give her six companions better food. She threatened to kill herself of starvation. She was very determined, she was force fed multiple times, but she cared so much for her companion that she didn't give up. Amidst her hunger strike she and her companions were put into solitary confinement inside a tiny cell with boarded up windows. All this shows Alice Paul will never give up and she spoke with her actions not her words. Reason 2 Throughout her life Alice Paul fought hard against president Woodrow Wilson. She put up banners. Did silent protesting in front of the White House. Throughout this she endured mant many things. She endured many things. She had to stay in one house for 2 days due to public outrage when she showed a "Kaiser Wilson" banner to a Russian person going into the White House. In Alice Paul it says, "They returned every day, in good weather and bad, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She did countless things to pass an amendment which would grant the women their wish of being able to have their rights. Including a hunger strike, a silent protest, and she even endured force feeding. In Alice Paul it says, "For five months the White House siege continued; while Congress refused to act without word from the president." (William and Mary Lavender 4). This shows the frustration that she had to go through, and how much the government seemed stubborn. She never gave up despite knowing the fact that president Wilson wouldn't budge. In the end she was able to convince president Wilson. She never even married. If that doesn't show her devotion I don't know what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Surprised by Joy and William Blake’s poem, The Sick Rose... William Wordsworth's poem titled "Surprised by Joy" and William Blake's poem, "The Sick Rose" employs a range of poetic techniques to highlight the pain that love can create. On the other hand, John Clare's poem titled "First Love" and Robert Burns's poem, "A Red, Red Rose" contrastingly explore the theme of love as a positive to be celebrated. William Wordsworth's poem titled "Surprised by Joy" is a sonnet which uses simile, personification, metaphor, emotive language and a question to highlight the pain love can create. The poet uses the simile "impatient as the wind" to emphasize the fact that life is like the wind, it comes and goes as it pleases. In this case, the "wind" is used as a symbol for 'life'. "Silent tomb" is a personification which shows that his love, being his daughter, is dead and cannot respond to him. The metaphor "have I been so beguiled as to be blind" is used to highlight the grief and pain his daughter's death has caused him. "Grievous love" is an emotive language which is used to show how much heartache and misery love can bring us when it is lost. The question "how could I forget thee?" is used in this poem to stress the importance of his memories of his deceased daughter which being the only thing that he has of her. The poet successfully expresses his opinion on how much pain love can create through his use of various poetic techniques. Similarly, William Blake's poem, "The Sick Rose" uses personification, symbolism, oxymoron and rhyme to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Film Analysis Of Sunset Boulevard Sunset Boulevard, directed by Billy Wilder features some very legendary and prominent actors as well as directors which helps make this film and instant classic. What makes this movie so unique is that there are both actors and directors in the movie who play themselves. The film stars notable actors and actresses such as Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Buster Keaton, Hedda Hopper, and Anna Q. Nilsson. It also features two very prominent directors, Erich von Stroheim and the infamous Cecil B. DeMille. The actors and actresses seemed to be made for these roles and help turn this movie into a classic. The over the top acting done by Gloria Swanson, the overly, flamboyant setting, and the musical score by Franz Waxman all help contribute to make this film a classic. Sunset Boulevard stars Gloria Swanson who plays a washed up silent movie star (Norma Desmond) which was not too much of a far stretch for her since she had in fact been a silent movie star back in her heyday. It also stars William Holden who plays a has–been writer down on his luck (Joe Gillis) who just happens to land himself in Norma Desmond's home. While sidetracked at her home, Joe decides to help her redo the script she had written. She offers him a place to stay while helping her with her script, he reluctantly agrees. She falls for him and the feeling isn't exactly mutual but he realizes that being a kept man might not be such a bad gig. It is clear that they both need one another, though for much different ... • 25. The Silent Scene In Hamlet And William Shakespeare's Hamlet Shakespeare was an intelligent man, he wrote characters with ideas in his mind of how they should be played, some directors and actors do not respect that. In a comparison of three different film adaptations of the play Hamlet, the famous "To be or not to be" speech is often butchered and destroyed with no respect for the original material. Music, scenery, and acting are are vital to the scene and how viewers may understand and appreciate the work and characters in it. Often neglected, it is up to watchers to decide whether or not the work was enjoyable, there are many reasons for those opinions to sway in a certain direction. Olivier, Tennant, and Branagh all had their take at the scene, and in comparison, only one managed to impress and match the stature of the original text. Olivier's portrayal of the "To be or not to be" soliloquy was utterly atrocious. With the age of the film taken into consideration, it still manages to fail at nearly every aspect and disappoint as much as possible. The strongest point, which in comparison is not strong at all, would have to be the music and sound or lack thereof. The silence definitely is akin to Hamlet's depression and his quiet speaking is attempting to add to that though failing miserably. A quiet scene is something which can definitely add the feeling of a character's struggle when done correctly which this was not, leading to an awkwardly quiet scene. The film starts to degrade even further with the scenery. Certainly a cliff ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the play no one wants to stand up and fight for what's right. The few people who are courageous and tell the truth are punished for it. When first reading the Crucible the only thing that comes to mind is the witch trials, but when looking closer it focuses on courage, weakness and truth. It's easy to stand with the crowd, it takes courage to stand alone. Giles Corey is one person who stands alone. He fights for his wife and brings sensible evidence to the court. He tries to explain the lies of the girls and save his wife, but the court won't have it. He is pressed for having courage and standing up for the truth. John ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. How do William Blake and William Wordsworth respond to... How do William Blake and William Wordsworth respond to nature in their poetry? The Romantic Era was an age, which opened during the Industrial (1800–1900) and French Revolution (1789). These ages affected the romantic poets greatly by disrupting and polluting nature. Before the Industrial Revolution, William Blake wrote about Songs of Innocence. He also wrote Songs of Experience but after the Industrial Revolution. William Wordsworth, on the other hand, continued on an optimistic route and ignored the Industrial Revolution in his poems. He instead wrote about nature only and its beauty. Previous Augustan poets were more controlled and rule governed. They were also concerned with order. In Blake's 'London', he describes the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wordsworth talks about the mind being free and relaxed, "Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!" The adjective 'deep' shows how immense the tranquility is. It also shows how the poem is personal, "Ne'er saw I." He sets the scene in the morning, creating a feeling of calmness and peace, "The beauty of the morning; silent, bare." The noun 'beauty' implies splendor and magnificence, showing the opposite of what Blake writes about 'London'. The adjective 'silent' is also the opposite of what Blake writes in 'London', "How the youthful Harlot's curse". Wordsworth mentions the daffodils as people, "When all at once I saw a crowd." Similarly, he uses personification, 'crowd', to imply that everyone is unified in nature. He uses color in his poem to indicate a deeper meaning, "A host, of golden daffodils." The adjective "golden" illustrates purity as well, therefore connecting it to innocence. The noun 'host' has a slight religious tone, which also relates to purity. 'The Daffodils' has eight syllables in each line. This makes the poem seem more complex than 'Spring'. In 'Spring', a lively tone is repeated throughout the poem,"Merrily, merrily we welcome in the year." The adverb 'merrily' is repeated to highlight the positive tone of the poem and to make it last longer. The pronoun 'we welcome in the year' also shows us how everyone is unified in nature. • 41. A Peace Stand For Peace : A Peaceful Stand For Peace A Peaceful Stand For Peace In this age acts of violence are still going on around the world. We're being labeled on who we are and attacked because of that, but, now people, groups, and organization are starting to take a stand. Just like Martin Luther King Jr., Mary Lease, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, and all the other leaders who stood up and fought for what they believed and sent a ripple effect throughout the country we as a nation must stand up and follow their example and stop all violent acts that are still going on across the nation. " Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless externation and passionate concern of dedicated individuals." ( "Martin") We must work to reach our goal of equality and peace and we only reach these goals together. However, today everyone is being labeled and labeling is stopping us from coming together and stopping a major issue, racism. " Who we truly are is not skin deep." ( "Williams") During the 1960's African Americans were kept away from white kids because of their skin color and now throughout the world races are being judged because of their skin color. Some people aren't even able to get jobs because of their skin color still in the world. " Who would you be if the world never gave you labels?" • 45. Problematic Decisions In The Novel Crabbe, By William Bell Throughout one's teenage years, one is forced with many difficult and problematic decisions. In the novel Crabbe, Franklin Crabbe is a troubled teenager who runs away from home to live in a forest on his own. He ruins the dream that his parents have for him because he feels that they expect too much from him. He is always told how to live and how to think but by running away he does not have to trust anyone nor maintain a relationship with anyone. In the novel Crabbe, William Bell develops the idea that trust issues and bad relationships, lead to bad lifestyle choices. This is shown through Crabbe's alcohol abuse and how he depends on it, how Crabbe acts on impulse and how he acts before he thinks, and through Crabbe's poor personal morals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, he always acts before he thinks. He says, "I felt good on the long journey North, sort of free" (Bell 38). He may have felt free in that very moment, but he forgot to think about the future. Crabbe did not know if running away would really solve his problems because it is the same thing as running away from your problems. He also says, "Well, I was almost happy" (Bell 38). Crabbe did not even know if this would make him happy in the long run. Crabbe has trust issues and bad relationships because of the way he acts with others. For example, when he is in sessions with Dr. Browne, he says the first thing that comes to his head. He replies, ' "Oh, don't worry, Fa – er, Doctor, I don't inhale the smoke," I almost blew it that time" ' (Bell 12). This proves that he is acting and that he is almost completely oblivious to what he is telling Dr. Browne. This is proving why trust issues and why bad relationships lead to bad lifestyle decisions because if he does not open up, all his emotions and feelings will be bottled up inside, and he will continue to act impulsively. • 49. Comparing The Metaphors Of London By William Blake And... During the 18th century, London was not charming, clean, and astounding, at least that's what William Blake thought. William Blake and William Wordsworth, poets of the romantic period, wrote poems about London. These two poets expressed how they felt about London about how it was at the time. Blake and Wordsworth create an image in a reader's mind of how they saw London, Blake's image being dim and Wordsworth's image is brighter. Blake viewed London as an awful place, and Wordsworth viewed London as a cheerful place. Blake and Wordsworth used metaphors, a setting, and they call attention to the classes of the people to get their message to readers. Metaphors are a attractive way to get readers to keep reading. In addition to that, Blake ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both poets describe what they see and hear in London. Blakes setting is more depressing and gloomy, and Wordsworth setting is happier and brighter. "In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;/ Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!" (10–11). Wordsworth is stating London is so calm and nice as he looks out onto the silent town. "In every cry of every man,/ In every Infant's cry of fear,/ In every voice, in every ban,/ The mind–forg'd manacles I hear." (5–8). Blake is stating London is horrible, as he hears cries down every street he walks through. Wordsworth creates an image in a reader's mind, an image that says London is great, beautiful, clean, calm, quiet, and dazzling. A nice morning, standing on the bridge looking out and seeing a peaceful town asleep. Green swaying grass and the smooth, warm sun on a face as another day a comes. Another example is if Wordsworth was painting what he saw. He would have used bright, warm colors with soft strokes. On the other hand, Blake creates an image that yells London is horrible. "But most, through midnight streets I hear" (13). Blake was ambling the streets at night, giving the image even more of a depressing place. Looking into the streets, a dirty, dark street, with cracks and loose rocks. With people crying and struggling to live another day in the cruel town. Painting wise, Blake would have used dark colors with harsh strokes. These are two different settings a reader can pick up from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kanye West and Hype Williams have been accused by the film director Gaspar Noé for ripping off his fantasy movie 'Enter the Void' for the 'All of the Lights' music video. In an interview, the film director finally addressed the controversy and has spoken about it. He revealed he was never consulted by the rapper during the making of the music video. Instead he was surprised when he saw Kanye's video and couldn't help but notice the similarities of it. Since the author choose to write this short story in the order in which it happened it helps the flow of the passage. Because this story started as it was happening you have to figure out what the conflict in the story is; this intrigues the reader by peeking their curiosity into what that conflict may be. In the passage it opens with Hester slightly persuading her husband's seemingly stubborn attitude. She states, "William, I don't think it would hurt you to let the boys go to the circus in town tomorrow." As if she assumes that his mind it already made up. How Did Rachel Carson Use To Change The World When the Pen Was Mightier Than the Sword: Rachel Carson's Use of Prose to Change the World The famous author and ecologist, Rachel Carson, singlehandedly managed to start an environmental movement with the power of her writing. The sharp contrast of the beauty that she described and the disaster that was happening prompts many a reader to take up arms and defend the world that they live in. Rachel used her writing talent to emphasize the contrast between how the world used to be and what it had and will become. Her powerful words created images within the readers minds of the horrors to come if nothing happens, by giving us glances of what had already happened. In her revolutionary book Silent Spring, the beauty of her prose juxtaposed by the evil of her topic makes the book extraordinary. Her use of beautiful descriptions of the natural world contrast with the destruction that pesticides can cause. It makes us realize that the world around us truly is beautiful but can be destroyed easily. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Patriarchy Or A Silent Feminist, By William Faulkner Patriarchy or a silent feminist, in the 1931 short story by William Faulkner patriarchy was the way of life, men are the dominate gender and women submissive. According to Sweeting–DeCaro patriarchy is "most men and (some) women believe that anyone who violates traditional gender roles in some way is unnatural, unhealthy and even immoral". (pp. 305–306) Therefore, patriarch status transferred to her, because she was the only one living within the household, without a husband and a job she very well could have been without a place to live. Due to this act and because of her family, social standing she could continue her upper–class life style image remaining in her home. Addition proof the author conveyed, "It was as if she demanded more than ever the recognition of her dignity as the last Grierson". (p. 306). Further, proof of her battle and soon emerging feminist, she visited by the authorities from the city about an odor coming from her home and again when they wanted her to pay taxes she dismissed them both times. This was not the character of women; boldly dismiss a man, especially a man of authority, this was not done during the time in which she lived. Further evidence of this point is "I have no taxes in Jefferson. Tobe!" The Negro appeared. "Show these gentlemen out." This ambitious new play teaches us the truth behind what really happened between the two groups the 'Dharug's' and the white settlers and by the use of Aboriginal dialect we are placed in the perspective of one white man, leaving the theatre in a deafening silence. The insightful casting of William Thornhill (Nathaniel Dean), an award winning actor and voice over artist, brings you to a better understanding of the archetypical character. While Bovell maintains that William Thornhill is still central to the play, he has been deliberate in giving voice to the silent characters of the book. Factual research is interweaved with fictional drama in Grenville's novel, revealing the shocking history, yet building a story around it. Part of the unfolding tragedy of the book and now the play is the sense that both convey, of how history could have been different. Thornhill charges in seeing the land as "the blank page in which a man might write a new life" but for the Aboriginal's it has always been their land, so they are torn on what to do. It is the shocking, unexpected truth that leaves the audience so silent you could hear a pin drop. Throughout the play there is brutal enslavement and repeated rape of young aboriginal woman (played courageously by a naked Miranda Tapsell). Smasher Sullivan (a rascally Jeremy Sims) commits these crimes, which are ignored and William Thornhill (Nathaniel Dean) carelessly turns a blind eye to them. Interestingly The Secret River is Andrew Upton and Cate Blanchett's very first commission for Sydney Theatre Company, so it's been a while in the making. It's also been worth the wait! Life In The Iron Mills Summary Rebecca Harding Davis's story "Life in the Iron Mills" is considered one of the first fictional novels to use realism and bring to life a delineated lower class and issues relevant to women. Encouraging social reform for working class women–as well blacks and immigrants–Davis employs a harsh concrete description of poor living conditions within the mills, workers' homes, and for the workers themselves. Whereas the meaning of class and social division has changed throughout time, Raymond Williams entry "Class" will be taken into consideration throughout this essay and create for an accurate definition of class among social division that correlates into the mills fictional setting. This essay will include Davis's vivid illustration of class separation and argue for social change among women, immigrants, and the alienated working class that are unable to escape life in Antebellum America. The story of "Life in the Iron Mills" begins with describing Hugh Wolfe, an immigrant mill hand whose differences separate himself from his faceless colleagues of the mill before he makes an appearance. The main narrative of the story starts with Hugh's cousin Deborah Wolfe; third–person narrative creates an opening depiction of Deborah as she stumbles home at 11 o'clock from a tiring shift in the iron mills. Williams choice of third person narrative to begin the story in doing so reveals Deborah's "weak, wretch [having] some stimulant in her pale life to keep her up, some love or hope, it ... During a friendly banter, Desdemona asks Emilia this very question; would she cheat on her husband to help him become monarch and have power over all the world? She quietly replies that she would only in secret, but only for her husband's own good. This question plays an essential role throughout Othello because Emilia is first accused of cheating on her husband. By saying this, she is showing knowledge and experience with the relations of men and women and the cruel manner they treat each other. Emilia verbalizes how men only use women to get what they desire, and disregard them when they cannot be expended to any further extent. In the play, Iago uses Emilia to seize Desdemona's handkerchief, his treasured article of Desdemona's as a gift of love from Othello. After gaining possession of the handkerchief, he wants to present evidence of Othello's wife cheating on him. The final result of the stolen handkerchief is death of multiple people including Emilia, Desdemona, and Iago. Emilia's thoughts and sayings pertaining to marriage, if taken seriously, could have prevented numerous deaths. Although a minor character, Shakespeare implements Emilia, and her decisions to remain silent or voice her opinions, to establish his storyline and eventually tie it all together into a tragic play. Mr. Williams And The Music Of Music And Film John Williams once said "so much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories" – and linger it did. Mr. Williams has made significant contributions to the arts of music and film. To fully understand the gravity of his achievements and their affect on humanity, we must first look at the progression of sound in film; the effect music has in film and its audience; and lastly his accomplishments of music and film. In the infancy of film, movies were silent but not without sound. To make film a more pleasant experience, music was provided to cover up the ambient noise of the projector and help create an agreeable atmosphere, often by the use of a solo piano. (Fischoff, S. (2005)). The musician generally improvised – playing mostly a variety of popular romantic and melodramatic scores of the late nineteenth century (such as William Tell Overture, Ride of the Valkyrie, Les Preludes, etc.) – as long as it accompanied the action/scene or enhanced the mood (for dramatic effect). ("From Scene to Shining Screen: A Short History of Film Music". para. 1–2. (n.d.)). As film grew in popularity and length, so did the musical accompaniment – adding instruments to the ensemble until even some theaters were housing full orchestras. In America, people are raised to believe that the justice system never fails, and that no matter what happens justice will always prevail, though for some people this safety net has failed them. Since the late 1980s six studies have documented 250 interrogation–induced false confessions. Police–induced false confessions are the result of multistep process and sequence of influence, persuasion, and compliance. Imagine that a solider of the U.S. military is brought in for questioning, kept locked up for sixteen hours in an interrogation room, constantly threatened with the death penalty if they did not confess to the crime, and the whole time left without representation. In 1997 this was the case for four individuals from Norfolk, Virginia held without representation and forced to give false confessions. On July 8, 1997, William Bosko, an enlisted sailor returns home from a week at sea to find his wife Michelle Moore–Bosko gruesomely murdered in their apartment. Detectives interview family, friends and neighbors of the couple before asking their next–door neighbor Danial Williams to come in for questioning. Countermarching is the military maneuver in which rows of infantry take turns advancing and firing upon an enemy, only to be replaced by the rank behind them which had already reloaded. The maneuver would allow ranks of infantry to establish a constant base of fire while involving a greater proportion of rifle bearing soldiers at a single given time. The deadly practice saw its first applications in late 16th century Japan and later developed independently in the midst of the Dutch Revolt in Western Europe. Early military reformers had a great deal of difficulty reforming the status quo, as military generals and members of the intellectual community demonstrated a great deal of inertia. Novel Ideas' silent partners have numerous concerns with public officials calling off layoffs including the hindrance of economic performance, an increase in insolvency, and an inability to maximize company profits.. We realize that the principal motive is to maximize profits. As investors in our company, we understand why the silent partners tend to agree with the social responsibility model of Milton Friedman. The silent partners, like Mr. Friedman, feel as if we need to utilize our resources and engage in activities that diminish the economic volatility our company is facing (Crawford, 9/20). A primary concern is to do whatever it takes to maintain the company's solvency, while adhering and staying within any legal boundaries. Another concern the silent partners may have is the social responsiveness strategy that the officials from the local chamber of commerce and local economic development group want us to utilize. The local organizations want us to avoid layoffs, so the community can maintain economic stability. However, we know that the silent partners are concerned that if we do not fire one of the full–time employees, we will not be maximizing our profits, and again increasing the economic volatility of our business. Stafford takes the time to let the reader think and analyze the questions asked in the first seven lines. In lines 9 and 10 he says that "You and I can turn and look at the silent river and wait" (Stafford). But if you remember in the first line the river is ice so it's not only silent but calm, it's not moving at all. "The speaker in the poem chooses not to discuss "whether/ what I have done is my life" until the river is ice" (Anderson).I think that he uses the time of winter to wait for the river to freeze so share his thoughts. For if the river is frozen it cannot pass on and judge his life. He follows in lines 11–13 that the river is silent but there are still currents and movement hidden under the ice. Stafford paraphrases these lines "That river, and that world–and our lives–all share the depth and stillness of much more significance then our talk, or intentions" (Stafford). I believe that he trying to tell (you) the reader that no matter what you do in life or who has something to say about it the actions in which we choose to make have more significance than we may see. In the last line Stafford says "What the river says, that is what I say" (Stafford). Stafford uses the "ice as a protective mask within the poem" (Anderson), not allowing any final judgment to be passed. Starting with the frozen river in the first line Stafford gives us the ultimate life lesson hidden within life's "mistakes" that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rachel Carson's Silent Spring and the Beginning of the Environmental Movement in the United States When Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was published in 1962, it generated a storm of controversy over the use of chemical pesticides. Miss Carson's intent in writing Silent Spring was to warn the public of the dangers associated with pesticide use. Throughout her book are numerous case studies documenting the harmful effects that chemical pesticides have had on the environment. Along with these facts, she explains how in many instances the pesticides have done more harm than good in eradicating the pests they were designed to destroy. In addition to her reports on pesticide use, Miss Carson points out that many of the long–term effects that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Impact of Silent Spring When excerpts of Silent Spring first began appearing in The New Yorker magazine in June 1962, they caused an uproar and brought a "howl of indignation" from the chemical industry. Supporters of the pesticide industry argued that her book gave an incomplete picture because it did not say anything about the benefits of using pesticides. An executive of the American Cyanamid Company complained, "if man were to faithfully follow the teachings of Miss Carson, we would return to the Dark Ages, and the insects and diseases and vermin would once again inherit the earth." Chemical manufacturers began undertaking a more aggressive public relations campaign to educate the public on the benefits of pesticide use. Monsanto, for example, published and distributed 5,000 copies of a brochure "parodying" Silent Spring entitled "The Desolate Year," which explained how chemical pesticides were largely responsible for the virtual eradication of diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, sleeping sickness, and typhus in the United States and throughout the world, and that without the assistance of pesticides in agricultural production millions around the world would suffer from malnutrition or starve to death (NRDC 1997). One of the main counterarguments to Miss Carson's book expressed by the farmers, scientists, and other supporters of the pesticide industry was that farm yields would be drastically reduced without the assistance ... • 141. Langston Hughes Poetry Analysis Throughout history, forms of language such as, speeches, poetry, and literature, have been strategically and efficiently utilized as a revolutionary tactic to fulfill a goal of social change. For instance, Langston Hughes was an incredible poet in which he used his words to question the racial division of the American society during the Harlem Renaissance. Additionally, Hughes became a vital figure in the movement for racial equality through the use of his language. Language and more specifically, words have the power to drive resistance because they convey a particular message and inspire and motivate others to strive for social change. With the assistance of rhetorical techniques, such as word choice, tone, theme, allusion, imagery, pathos, and repetition, the message is adequately emphasized to convey the poet's idea. This, therefore, motivates others to contribute to change. Furthermore, poetry is crucial to effectively motivate the collective majority to be involved in resistance through the use of rhetoric. Besides Hughes, another poet named Oscar Williams wrote a poem entitled "A Total Revolution," which was a direct response to Robert Frost's "A Semi– Revolution," in which he argued that everyone is needed to contribute to change, not half. Williams usage of the word "evolution" makes a definite explanation of what a semi revolution would result to. The word "evolution" is commonly applied in the context of science to explain the gradual development or progress of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
