INTRODUCTION:
Language documentation and
description play a crucial role in
safeguarding linguistic diversity,
preserving cultural heritage,
and advancing linguistic
research.
What is a LANGUAGE DOCUMENTATION?
Language documentation refers to the
systematic collection and preservation of
linguistic data from a particular language for
the purpose of analysis, description, and
preservation. It involves recording various
aspects of a language, such as its vocabulary,
grammar, phonetics, and cultural context.
Language documentation aims to create a
comprehensive record of a language to
ensure its preservation and to facilitate
linguistic research and revitalization efforts.
Importance of Language
Documentation:
1. Preservation of Endangered
Languages: Language documentation
ensures the survival of endangered
languages by creating a lasting record
of linguistic practices and traditions.
In 2008, two American linguists active in
documenting endangered languages ,
then it was made into a film ‘The
Linguists’.
KAURNA LANGUAGE
Historically spoken by Kaurna people
in South Australia . However this
language has been revived by
documentation of early missionaries and
other researchers.
TIBETO-BURMA LANGUAGE
In India, endangered tibeto-burma language of
nearby Arunachal Pradesh is being documented since
2016.
Nearly 220 Indian languages have been died in last
50 years
197 languages in India is declared as endangered by
UNESCO
HOW ARE WE GOING TO SAVE THESE LANGUAGES ?
Those languages dies with its people.
Since everything being digitalised , language
documentation also prefers digitalisation . they started
to record the folk dances , songs , idioms , their
conversations of people belonging to endangered
language community . and this digitalised format also
help the visually impaired people
