Gatsby bought a house across from Daisy's to be close to her. All of his wealth and parties were an attempt to impress her and lure her back to him. However, Daisy has a daughter with Tom which complicates Gatsby's dream of recapturing the past with Daisy. Gatsby's infatuation with Daisy, the idealized version from years ago, reveals that he may be shallow or in love with an idea rather than the real person.
