Gatsby
• Great Gatsby is a novel which tells the story of
Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire and his
pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, a wealthy young
woman whom he loved in his youth.
• The Great Gatsby can be considered a tragedy
because it revolves around a larger-than-life hero
whose pursuit of an impossible goal blinds him to
reality and leads to his violent death
Author
• The Great Gatsby is a historical novel which is
written by American writer Francis Scott Key
Fitzgerald in 1925, published on 10th April 1925.
• Fitzgerald was inspired to write the book by the
grand parties, he attended on prosperous long
island, where he got a front-row view of the elite,
moneyed class of 1920s, a culture he longed to
join but never could.
Genre
• The great Gatsby is a Historical fictional story
which has literary genre. The great Gatsby is
based on Tragedy, Realism, Modernism and
Social Satire.

• Nick Carraway:
He was the narrator of “Great Gatsby”. He was
young man from the Minnesota. He settled in West
Egg, home to rich people. He was the neighbor of
Jay Gatsby
• Jay Gatsby:
He was a mysterious wealthy man living in a gothic
mansion in West Egg. He threw lavish parties every
Saturday night. James Gatz was the original name of
Jay Gatsby.
• Daisy Buchanan:
She was Nick’s cousin, and the woman Gatsby
loved. She was currently married to the wealthy
Tom Buchanan. She was lived in East Egg, where
traditional rich people lived.

Point of View
• The Great Gatsby can be described as the
narration of a series of events. Nick Carraway is a
witness in the novel, around which the story
unfold.
• While Fitzgerald’s choice to present the plot
mainly through the eyes of first person narrators
presents certain limitations.
• It provides the mean to relate the tone and the
message of the novel as whole.
Exposition
• The narrator describes Gatsby as having something gorgeous
about him. He says that the Gatsby is optimistic about life, has
an extraordinary gifts for hope and romantic in a way that no
one else.
• Tom Buchanan was the huge guy who was previously one of
the most powerful ends that ever played football as new
heaven. His first impression in the novel doesn’t seems to be
very likable.
• Daisy Buchanan was a kind and charming person who is
engaging and makes people feels like there is no one that she
would rather see. Having bright eyes, a passionate mouth, and
full of excitement, she has certain innocence to her. She seems
to be fake a lot of her innocence though.
• Miss Baker tells nick that Tom has a mistress in the New York
City.
• Myrtle is Tom’s mistress and George is her clueless husband
that is friendly with Tom and works in the auto Business.
Rising Action
• Gatsby wealth comes from the “new” money,
which means that It was recently acquired, not
passed down through his family. This money
spent on the fancy things that shown off his
wealth . Some of these things including his
extravagant mansion and grounds, huge parties
which he throw all time, a fancy Roll-Royce,
several aquaplanes, the multitude of hired help,
carets of food, the library full of unread books,
and just overall lifestyle.
• Nick goes to the party of Jay Gatsby because he
was invited that Saturday morning by Gatsby’s
chauffeur bringing over a formal note
• When Nick met Gatsby, he did not realize that the person whom he is talking to
was Gatsby himself. Nick Start talking to Gatsby when him and Jordan sat down
at a table with him and a little girl. After realizing that they had seen each other
while in the army, Nick makes a comment about it being strange that he has not
even seen the host of the party. At this point, Gatsby reveals who he is, Nick is
embarrassed.
• Gatsby and Nick soon becomes friends. Nick and Jordan also begin to each other
daily. Nick and Gatsby travel to the city one day and Nick meets Meyer
Wolfsheim, one of Gatsby’s associates and his link to organize crime.
• While having tea with Jordan Nick learns Gatsby is in love with Daisy. Gatsby
and daisy had met years earlier when he was in army, but they could not be
together as he was not rich
Falling Action
• Gatsby made his fortune with goal of
winning Daisy Buchanan. He threw parties in
the hope that Daisy will attend them. Gatsby
wants to meet daisy. Through Jordan, he asks
Nick to invite Daisy to his house.
• When the former lovers, Gatsby and Daisy
met, they felt slightly nervous at first but
soon they are very comfortable around each
other.
• Daisy impressed by the beautiful mansion
and Gatsby attitude. Tom and Daisy attended
one of the Gatsby’s parties. Tom is busy
chasing women, whereas Gatsby and Daisy
sneak over to Nick’s yard. Gatsby and Daisy’s
affair began to grow.
• On one fateful summer day, Gatsby and Nick travel to East Egg to have lunch with
Buchanan and Jordan Baker. Daisy suggests they make a trip to the city. Daisy pays
special attentions because she does not want her feelings to hide from Gatsby. She does
not want to hide her love from Gatsby, and Tom easily understood what’s going on.
• Tom, Nick and Jordan drive in Gatsby’s car. Gatsby and Daisy drive Tom’s car.
• Low on gas, Tom stops Gatsby’s car at George Wilson’s gas station where he sees Wilson
is not well.
• Like Tom who has just learned of his wife’s affair. Wilson has learned of Myrtle’s secret
affair, but he does not know who the man is Wilson plans to take Myrtle away from the
place which makes tom very unhappy.
• The group ends up at plaza Hotel.
Climax
• Tom questioned Gatsby about his intentions regarding
Daisy. Gatsby wants Daisy to tell Tom that she has
never loved Tom and has always loved him. But daisy
did not do this. Then Gatsby declared that she will soon
leave Tom. Tom knows Daisy far better than Gatsby.
He knows that Daisy will never going to leave him.
Because of his traditional wealth from the family and
power. She knows Tom’s wealth will always win over
the Gatsby newfound-wealth.
• Tom ordered Daisy and Gatsby to go back home in
Gatsby car. Tom, Nick and Jordan follows in his car. As
Tom’s car approaches near Wilson garage, they can see
that some sort of accident has occurred.
• They learn that Myrtle Wilson has been hit and killed
by a passing car which seems to have been Gatsby’s
car.
• Nick learns that Daisy and Gatsby was not driving the car when the
accident happened. But Gatsby confessed that he would take all the
blame.
• George Wilson searches for the driver who killed Myrtle. Tom told
George that Gatsby was the driver of the Car. George thought that
driver who killed Myrtle must be his secret lover.
• After that he found Gatsby in the pool at his mansion. He shot Gatsby
dead. Later, he killed himself.

Ending
• Nick planned for Gatsby funeral. He saw
that no one is concerned with Gatsby
death. Daisy and tom has mysterious left
on a trip.
• A telegram from Henry C Gatz, Gatsby’s
father say that he will attend the funeral.
Nick, Henry Gatz and minister attend the
funeral of Gatsby.
• Just Like Gatsby’s dream of Dishonesty.
The American dream of happiness and
individualisms has disintegrated into
more pursuit of wealth even by dishonest
means.
• Even Daisy did not attend the funeral of Gatsby for her he become
wealthy and did everything
• The American dream became an American tragedy or nightmare for
Gatsby.
• Gatsby’s power to transform his dreams into reality and his capability
to love Daisy deeply makes him “The Great Gatsby” despite all his
flaws.
