The film opening sequence of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo uses close-ups throughout to draw the viewer in and show shots from a first-person perspective. It also uses overhead shots to build tension and cut between different camera angles faster to grab attention. Extreme close-ups are used to show where flames are coming from and signal a change in scene. The color scheme contrasts to foreshadow the different personalities of characters, and dark imagery with fire conveys the film will be a dramatic thriller where lives are endangered. Low-key lighting and simple white title credits are used.

Cinematography
One of the cinematography used in this is a close up this
technique is used a lot throughout the sequence. I think the
director has done this because he most likely thought it was the
best thing for the film opening title sequence. Almost every shot
in the film’s opening title sequence is a close up. Another
reason why I think the director has done this is because then we
get to see the shots sort of like first hand.
Another technique the director uses is an overhead shot. I think
the reason why the director has used this is because it sort of
builds up the tension. The director wanted to build the tension
so you want to keep watching it. He has changed the angle type
because when you’re watching it and its all close ups then you
think that it’s just going to be the same all the way through the
film so then when it changes and starts to get more faster than
it grabs your attention .
The last of the camera angles he uses is an extreme close up. I
think the director has chosen to do this because he has added
colour so as it is on a dark screen then he wants to show you
where the flame is coming from. He could have also made the
shot be a close up because it could be a clue to what will end up
happening in the film. Another reason why I think he has
included an extreme close up is because there is a change in the
scene. All the way through the opening title sequence it has
been people/objects being covered in some sort of black thing
but all of a sudden there is a fire which is bright and in contrast
to the normal black scenes.

Visual Effects &
Colour Scheme
The colour scheme for this opening title sequence is contrasting.
I think that the director has done this because the film is about
two very different people. This could be seen as foreshadowing
because he’s basically telling us that one character is plain, basic
and boring and the other character is more dangerous,
interesting and flamboyant.
Genre Conventions
From the film’s opening title sequence I think it is going to be a
very dark drama. I can tell this because the director is showing
us that during the film people’s lives will be in danger. The
audience can see this because he is using a lot of blackness
which can be associated with death. He also uses fire because
fire shows that something is going to happen that is destructive,
chaotic and will cause grief to a lot of people. The reason why I
think it will be a drama is because people tend to think of fire as
being very dramatic.
Narrative
There was no narrative in this opening sequence.

The only editing technique used for this was low key lighting. This
fits in with the genre conventions.
Title Credit Design
The title credit design for this sequence is normal white writing.
The director has done this so then the writing stands out.
