The short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe tells of a visit by an unnamed narrator to his friend Roderick Usher, the last surviving member of the House of Usher, who has been overcome by hypochondria and anxiety. While at the house, Roderick's sister Madeline falls ill and appears to die, though she is later discovered alive while being entombed. She attacks Roderick in a delirious state and they both die as the house cracks and sinks into a tarn, ending the Usher bloodline.
