2. England is a European country, home to the English people.
• The first British colonies, settled in the 1600s, were in North America,
in what would become Canada and the United States of America.
• Through the same period de facto control was established in India.
• Along the sea route to India, Britain occupied various Dutch and
French colonies, of which the Cape of Good Hope, Mauritius and
Ceylon were retained.
• A ‘swing to the east’, including the great voyages of James Cook in
the Pacific, drew Australia and New Zealand into the system.

4. SPAIN
• The occupation of northern Mexico, which was thinly populated and
largely arid, proceeded more slowly than did that of central and
southern Mexico.
• Spanish expansion in this area was motivated chiefly by the hope of
discovering precious metals, the need for defense against nomadic
indigenous raiders, and the desire to forestall incursions by the
British and French.
• Near the end of the 16th century, the northern frontier of New Spain
in most areas was close to the present Mexican-U.S. boundary line.
Within the area that is now the United States, a settlement had been
