Green HomesBy:Lavell Shipman, Alex Parra, Sheena Tagalicod
A growing world population of 6.3 billion needs the materials of life: food, clean water, shelter, clothes, and transportation. What can humans do to co-create a healthy planet? How do we restore and maintain balance between ourselves and our Earth?Calling all pioneers, innovators and eco-friendly citizens. What if there was a paradigm shift which people all over the world could integrate into their daily lives? So how do we become green?
This is not the green I was talking about
Buildings Affordable homes for Oahu’s residentsSet an example of green development in order to inspire future developments Produce a healthy and sustainably oriented living environment that fosters a connection to the land.Green Homes at Lualualei has 3 objectives that they want to get across to the people of Hawaii when they present homes to their customers. "Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future."
Everybody loves to save money so what are the Benefits of Living in a Green Home
Benefits of Green Homes Increased energy and water efficiency in construction could lead to decreased energy and water consumption in a home throughout its lifespan .
They are better for the environment
Proper insulation and air sealing will keep your heating and cooling cost lower, while efficient windows, appliances, lighting, and other household equipment will lower your electricity bills.More Benefits of Green Homes Health benefits- Green homes use toxin free building materials, they also have fewer problems with mold and mildew.
Use fewer natural resources: Green homes also use
Further, some renewable, recycled, and other efficient building products used in green home construction may reduce the impact on natural resources. Also, green homes often include resource and waste reduction and recycling amenities.Lets get a little greener and talk about bamboo homes
Bamboo It’s become clear that bamboo is one of the most significant solutions to our global warming issue. Because of the “carbon sink” properties, bamboo is indeed at a tipping point.
In fact, over one billion people on Earth live in bamboo houses--but not in Western society—the largest consumer and emitter of carbon dioxide, which is the major cause for global warming and climate change. Find out how bamboo, Earth’s most renewable green building material, can reduce global warming and carbon emission. Restore native habitat, protect watersheds and raise communities out of poverty
Description of BambooBamboo is one of the most amazingly versatile and sustainable building materials available. It grows remarkably fast and in a wide range of climates.
It is exceedingly strong for its weight and can be used both structurally and as a finish material. The canes are beautiful when exposed and they can be cut in such a way as to be re-combined into useful products such as flooring.
There is a long vernacular tradition to the use of bamboo in structures in many parts of the world, especially in more tropical climates, where it grows into larger diameter canes. One tricky aspect to the use of bamboo is in the joinery; since its strength comes from its integral structure, it cannot be joined with many of the traditional techniques used with wood. Can a Home really be made from bamboo???
Bamboo homes in HawaiiBamboo Village Hawai’i (BVH), is a Big Island based and non-profit organization that was formed to promote bamboo use as a sustainable building resource. By working together with local officials, architects, and other community leaders, BVH is eager to strengthen the Big Island’s economy through bamboo living. Thus, will also benefit the environment and promote a global sustainability movement.http://www.bamboovillagehawaii.org/index.htm

How Solar HomesworkSolar energy for homes begins with the solar panel. Solar panels are designed to capture the sun's radiation and convert it into electricity. They do this by making cells out of silicon, which acts as a semiconductor. When the sun's rays hit these cells, the energy is absorbed by the panel and releases free-flowing electrons. They flow into the panel's metal tips and become an electrical current. The glass plate protects these cells from weather elements like wind and heavy rain. Solar panels work best when the panels are exposed to the most sun, since most solar panels convert into energy around 22 percent of the radiation captured. Therefore, most homes will place their panels only on one side of the house. The next slide shows a picture of how solar energy works.
