THE EARLY LIFE and
CHILDHOOD OF JESUS
The Early Life of Jesus
• Synoptic means “same view”. The gospels of Matthew, Mark and
Luke give the same kinds of stories summarizing events in the life of
Jesus.
• John’s gospel is different because it uses poetic
language and contains long speeches of Jesus called
discourses.
These discourses are not found in the synoptic gospels.
• The INFANCY NARRATIVES tell how the birth of Jesus came to be,
and give accounts of the earliest life of Jesus.
– Matthew 1:18-25 and Matthew 2:1-23 includes the story of the
Magi (the Three Kings)
– Luke 1:26-56 and Luke 2:1-20/22-40 includes the shepherds
Important Events: The Childhood of Jesus
* The ___________________ - The angel Gabriel tells Mary that she
will be the Mother of the Savior ( Lk. 1:26-35)
* The ___________________ - Mary goes to see Elizabeth, mother of
John the Baptist (Lk. 1:39-56)
* The ___________________ - The birth of Jesus (Lk. 2: 4-12)
•The ___________________ - The infant Jesus is taken to the Temple,
in accordance with Jewish Law. At this time, a man named Simeon
shows devotion to God and gives thanks for seeing the Savior. (Lk. 2:22
- 38)
•The ________________ of the ______________ - three kings
(astrologers) come from the East to see the Baby Jesus. Their gifts of
gold, frankincense and myrrh show that Jesus is a King.
• The __________ into ___________ - Joseph has a dream that warns him
of danger. He takes Jesus and Mary to Egypt to protect Jesus from
___________ (Mt. 2:13-23)
• The _____________ of the ________________ - At King Herod’s
command, all baby boys in Palestine were killed. Herod was afraid that a
“new king” would tbake over his kingdom. ( Mt.2:16-18)
• The ___________ of __________ in the ___________ - by the time Jesus
was 12 years old, Joseph has brought the family back to Palestine
(Nazareth). They go to visit the Temple in Jerusalem. Jesus is separated
from his parents; they find him teaching the Elders
(Pharisees & Scribes) in the Temple (Lk.2:41-52)
•The Infancy Narratives are often called the “Gospels in miniature” because
they tell the same Good News as the whole Gospels, showing all aspects
of Jesus’ love.
•The Infancy Narratives reveal:
ÞJesus’ identity
ÞJesus’ mission
ÞThe role of the Holy Spirit in His life
ÞJesus’ concern for all (rich or poor)
ÞJesus’ suffering
ÞJesus’ rejection from people
The stories of Jesus’ infancy also reveal the main message, what
Christians call the Easter message: Jesus is Lord, the Son of God who
saved us.

Jesus had a mission The Holy Spirit always
had a role in the life of Jesus
Jesus came to save ALL
Jesus suffered for us
JESUS IS
LORD, the
SON OF
GOD, WHO
SAVED US
-Jesus was born sometime around the year 4 BC
-BC means Before Christ. It refers to the years before
Jesus was born, before He was recognized as the Christ
(anointed one)
-The current epoch (time period) is referred to as AD,
meaning Anno Domini, “In the Year of Our Lord”. This
refers to the years since the birth of Jesus
-In order for Jesus
to become a flesh
and blood human,
He needed a
Mother. Mary said
yes to God.
-In Latin, the word
fiat means “let it
be”. Mary’s fiat gave
us Jesus.
“I am the handmaid of
the Lord. May it be
done to me according
to your word.”
- A Greek title for Mary is Theotokos,
which means Mother of God. This title
was first given in 431 AD at the
Counsel of Ephesus
- Catholics believe that God gave
Mary special privileges. These
are:
ÞThe Immaculate Conception –
Mary was never in a state of sin
ÞThe Virgin Birth – Mary
conceived Jesus through the
power of the Holy Spirit
ÞThe Assumption – Mary went to
heaven body and soul at the end
of her life
