The Development Of A Venous Leg Ulcer
Stages And Treatment
What Is a Venous Stasis Ulcer?
Venous stasis ulcers are persistent, non-healing wounds that typically
manifest on the legs or ankles. These ulcers arise from inadequate
blood circulation, causing blood to accumulate in these regions and
accounting for more than 80 percent of all ulcer cases. If left untreated,
venous leg ulcers can lead to serious complications such as infections
and skin discoloration.
Venous ulcers progress through distinct stages:
Stage 1: The initial stage presents as red and inflamed skin, often
resembling a bug bite, bruise, or mild irritation, making it challenging to
detect.
Stage 2: As the ulcer advances, the inflamed skin may release a small
amount of fluid, becoming more noticeable. The ulcer may appear as a
severe bruise, and the area may become reddened, dry, or cracked.
Stage 3: The affected skin area begins to die, forming the foundation
of the ulcer. The wound may deepen, and although healing might
initiate, venous ulcer disease may reopen.
Stage 4: The open wound becomes visible and apparent, requiring
meticulous cleanliness. While venous ulcers may not self-heal, vein
treatment can address the underlying issue, reducing the risk of
recurrence.
Venous Ulcer Treatment
Treatment for mild cases of venous leg ulcers includes at-home
remedies such as elevating the affected leg, regular wound cleaning as
advised by a doctor, and antibiotics if an infection is present. For cases
not responding to these measures, seeking additional medical help is
essential. At Vein Clinic of America, our non-surgical treatment
techniques aim to redirect blood flow from malfunctioning veins to
healthier ones. This approach addresses the root cause, promoting
proper blood circulation crucial for preventing the recurrence of venous
leg ulcers. After undergoing appropriate vein treatment, these ulcers
should have the opportunity to heal on their own. We have 180 vein
clinic of America locations in over 30 states in the U.S.
