2. The story so far:
A small protestant town in Salem Massachusetts has
begun to assume witchcraft is among them, cursing
their children to become ill or hallucinate. Many
citizens have already been hanged due to conviction
of witchery. John Procter’s pregnant wife has been
charged as a witch by Miss Abigail Williams, who is
jealous of Goody Procter for being married to John.
All Hell has broken loose with neighbors against
neighbors and young girls pretending to be
psychically attacked by “witches”. John Proctor went
into court and confessed to lechery, but the court
didn't believe him. Then Mary Warren testified that
John Proctor used his spirit to drag her into court
and testify against the girls who were accusing
everyone of witchcraft and John Proctor got locked up
for wizardry.
3. ACT FOUR
SCENE ONE
A cell in Salem jail where men and women
await their conviction.
HALE: I have come to counsel you as a Christian.
PROCTOR: But why? Without looking up. I am
dammed to Hell and back for being a bloody
Wizard of all things. Stands up and angrily
makes arm gestures. This town has gone nuts with
talk of witchery and accusing your neighbors to
be something they’re not!
4. HALE: Calmly sits on a near-by bench. Yes, I know. I
believe there are no witches about, just bored young women
that are stoked full of jealousy and anger for others.
PROCTOR: Then why must I suffer for their cruel games?
Pacing around cell. I confessed my sins but I did not
confess to witchery! I am no witch!
HALE: Well I am sure many others believe in that and we
could put a stop to this.
PROCTOR: Sits next to Hale. We must surely try.
HALE: I do not believe convincing the town will be easy but
this madness to kill your neighbors must be stopped, in the
name of God. This is something of the Devil’s work, the
making of friends into enemies. Short silence. I will leave
now and make with getting everything back to the good
Christian way. Hale rises then exits.
5. Proctor is now alone in the jail
cell.
PROCTOR: With head in hands. I pray
to God, someone help us end this
misery.
Scene ends
6. SCENE TWO
Hale is walking around the village consoling panicking
women and children
HALE: Goody Bradshaw, listen as I speak. Your neighbor is
not a witch. You flowers have wilt due to poor care and
over watering.
GOODY BRADSHAW: No! I seen her curse my land, so none may
grow, with my own eyes!
HALE: I know you may wish to believe the recent talk of
witches, but I have found that none of the accused actually
served Lucifer and were wrongly hanged. There are no
witches I tell you! Anger rising.
7. GOODY BRADSHAW: I know what I seen Mr. Hale, and there’s
somethin’ unnatural about my wilted flowers! Turns and
leaves without hearing from Hale.
HALE: Rubs eyes with hand muttering and shaking his head.
Why is everyone so out to blame their wrongs on those they
once called friends?
Mary Warren walks by quickly, muttering to herself. Hale
grabs her wrist, pulling her
to the front of him.
HALE: Where are you going to in such a rush young Mary?
MARY WARREN: Stammering and seeming lost. I just- I need to
find Abby. Pulls arm free of Hale’s grip and goes to run
away.
8. HALE: Grabs her shoulders, turning her around. Mary, I know
that you girls have not been attacked by witches. I know
you’ve been lying to the town for your own selfish wants!
People turn and stare then Hale leads them into a corner
farthest from the crowd.
MARY WARREN: I just need to talk to Abby! There’s a long
pause. Mary looks around quickly then speaks in a whisper.
I think we’ve done wrong in the accusing of witches Mr.
Hale. But if we be found of lying, we’ll be- She stops and
takes a deep breath. we will be hanged for doing such a
thing.
HALE: Mary, this needs to stop! The town has gone nuts and
people have died!
MARY WARREN: But- Pauses then whispers. Abby said if I, or
anyone, says anything about us faking or dancing or of her-
Pause she’ll kill whoever talks!
9. HALE: What did Abby do?
MARY WARREN: She didn’t do nothing.
HALE: Long pause. I will not let her know you
have told me but I must know. This- this madness
must stop immediately and I will do everything
in my power save you and the others from
hanging.
MARY WARREN: Pause. It was when we was dancin’
in the woods. Tituba was conjuring Goody
Putnam’s dead babies and well, Abby wanted John
Proctor to herself. She says she wishes Goody
proctor dead and she drank blood over the fire.
Abigail tried to kill Goody Proctor by drinking
blood!
10. HALE: Why pretend witches are amongst the town?
MARY WARREN: I do not know. We just did what
Abby was doin’. After awhile it was easy and I
started believing in what I said I saw. That’s
when Mercy Lewis got talking about how what we
are doin’ is wrong.
HALE: Go get Mercy and return to me if you want
to help the town.
MARY WARREN: I cannot make her come with me but
I can try.
Scene ends.
11. SCENE THREE
Mary has returned with Mercy and they have
agreed to admit what they have done and accuse
Abby of aiding adultery and false accusation of
witches. They now sit in Judge Danforth’s
courtroom with Parris and Hale as well as all
those still imprisoned with the accusation of
witchery/wizardry.
DANSFORTH: Miss Abigail Williams is on trial for
aiding adultery, threatening many lives, and
falsely accusing witches. Do you admit to these
charges Abigail?
12. ABIGAIL: Sits far away the others avoiding eye contact. I
did threaten my friends and I falsely accused witches, sir.
DANSFORTH: What about aiding Mr. Proctor in an act of
adultery?
ABIGAIL: Looking up. I will not burn for love, sir.
PARRIS: Abby, you need to tell the truth.
HALE: The choice is hers. If she does not admit her sins,
she will be punished more harshly. If she admits and asks
God for forgiveness, her punishment with be lighter.
ABIGAIL: I will not confess my sin of love! He loved me
then, and he loves me now. Looking at John. He would never
wish to see me hang for loving him back!
John looks away from Abigail.
13. DANSFORTH: Alright then. Abigail Williams, on the charges
of threatening, lying, and adultery, I sentence you to be
publicly hanged at dawn tomorrow.
Abby looks at John, as if begging for help as Parris takes
her into a jail cell. Abigail and Parris exit.
PROCTOR: What shall happen to the girls and I now?
DANSFORTH: All falsely accused are to be released
immediately and John Proctor must publicly announce his
sins. John, you must also go to Reverend Parris’ service
every Sunday and ask God to forgive you. As for the girls,
I believe-
HALE: I will be in town for a few weeks. Let us have the
girls remain in my care. We will pray for forgiveness many
times a day but they were tricked and forced to do
something they never wanted to. I believe any other
punishment is cruel and unjust.
14. DANSFORTH: Pause. I suppose that is
a fair punishment for them. God is
very forgiving of the young and
ignorant. All are dismissed.
Everyone exits.
15. SCENE FOUR
Abigail is brought to the town square where every
person in the village has come to watch her hanging.
She searches the crowd for the one that sent her and
locks eyes with him.
ABIGAIL: John! I know you still love me! You can stop
this! Save me from a horrible death, John.
John looks away and Abigail starts tearing up.
Abigail is walked through a crowd of staring eyes to
a large platform.
HALE: Do you have anything to say to your village?
16. ABIGAIL: Muttering to herself. This is
where I die for a man that refuses to
admit his love. Then yelling to everyone
in the crowd. You are all cowards, afraid
of your own shadow or any other small
threat among you! You will turn on one
another because you afraid of the Devil,
not God when you should tremble before
God and trust he will protect you from
Satan. Rope gets put around her head to
her neck. You all are-. The leaver has
been pulled and Abigail is now hanging
above the ground, not breathing. Dead.
17. PROCTOR: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed
be Thy name…
Crowd begins to say their prayers for her
together.
CROWD: …Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on
earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we
forgive those who trespass against us; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. Amen.
