THE ARGUMENTATIVE
ENVIROMENT
By: Lilit Oganyan
THE GREEK FOUNDATION FOR
ARGUMENTATION
• Artistic Proof- Artistic proof uses logos, pathos, or
ethos. They use personal appeal and opinions to
convince you that their argument is valid.
Example: Dogs should not be left in abusive homes
because they are burned, beaten, and tortured to the
point where they want to either run away or die.
THE GREEK FOUNDATION FOR
ARGUMENTATION
• Inartistic proof- Inartistic proof uses threat, blackmail, bribery, etc., to convince the
other individual to agree with them.
Example: I’ll give you $100 if you say I’m right.
Example: I will kill you if you do not agree that dogs are sacred animals and belong to
live like kings and queens.
LOGOS
• Logos is the Greek word for LOGIC.
• Logos is the logic behind your argument. It is making sure your argument is valid.
• Logos is a way of persuading with logic and reason.
• Logos can be divided into two different categories: inductive reasoning and
deductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning requires facts and reliable evidence.
Deductive reasoning requires generalization at first but then moves in depth
towards a specific argument to support the argument with evidence.
PATHOS
• Pathos involves the personal character of the individual making the argument
• Pathos deals with emotional appeal.
• Pathos brings out the soft side of the arguer.
• Example: “If we do not find a job soon, we will end up yelling for help. We do not
see anyone to help us here. So, go find a job”
ETHOS
• Ethos is the Greek word for “character”
• Ethos is an appeal to ethics.
• Makes a person more credible depending on who they are.
• It questions the other persons character and makes them wonder about ethical and
unethical parts of the argument
• Example: "As an oncologist, I am capable of telling you that this course of treatment
will likely generate the best results.”
