The social change model of leadership sees leadership as a collaborative process based on shared values that creates positive social change. It rests on 7 core values: citizenship, common purpose, controversy with civility, consciousness of self, congruence, commitment, and collaboration. The goal is to empower all people to work together for the betterment of their communities through civic engagement and service.

Hear from two alumni of On The Move’s leadership development program, about the organization’s innovative model to support emerging leaders within schools, public institutions, non-profit organizations and the health field. The webinar provides key principles, practices and strategies of implementation. Specifically, we explore the model’s approach of bringing together multi-generational communities of emerging and veteran leaders, who learn together to remove the barriers that prevent our collective success.

power
• Leadership effectiveness was based on how an
individual could hold power
• Ideas shifted to more managerial approaches
during the Industrial Revolution
3. A NEW IDEA OF LEADERSHIP
• A leader is someone that makes an effort for
positive change
• Anyone has the potential to become a leader,
does not need to be hierarchical
• It is a collective effort grounded in common
values as well as a self reflecting
• Leadership is not about getting other to do what
he or she wants but rather a transformational
process

powerful leadership vehicle
5. SOCIAL CHANGE MODEL VALUES
• Controversy with Civility –encouraging
• Citizenship –Working for change in the open, critical, and civil discourse to come up
community through care, service, social with new, creative solutions

• Common Purpose –shared responsibility toward beliefs, values, attitudes, and emotions

6. ETHICS AND VALUES
• The Social Leadership Model is heavy based on ethics and morals of the leader and the group
• The primary goal is to create social change, to perform actions that will benefit others
• In order to accomplish change, members need to be self sacrificing at times and consistent with
their vision
• Members need to be willing to participate in community based service
• Individuals must be willing to learn and develop as leadership is a dynamic process
7. EXAMPLE OF SOCIAL CHANGE MODEL
• A Fraternity is a value based organization
• The common purpose is to instill brotherhood
within its members
• Outreach toward the community is based on
common values and tradition
• Philanthropies are an example of Citizenship
• Hold themselves to a higher standard to better
provide social change
