This document discusses the added value of social participation in heritage. It outlines 4 ways that participation can enhance heritage: 1) By strengthening social protection of heritage alongside legal and technical protections; 2) By enhancing knowledge and information about heritage; 3) By generating social and human capital through trust, understanding, and a sense of belonging and purpose; 4) By enabling critical reflections and discussions about desired futures. The document also notes there are different levels of participation in heritage from principles and vision to specific activities and projects.
