The digital revolution has dramatically changed museums by facilitating online access to collections and virtual interaction beyond physical walls. This allows museums to preserve fragile artifacts, raise awareness of lesser known collections, and reach a global audience both physically and virtually. Digital tools also help museums share knowledge, bridge information gaps, and stimulate interest in visiting physically.

It notes that many discovered works are in museums but not returned to their rightful owners, and there should be efforts to find and recover art stolen by the Nazis to give it back to owners. Hitler had his soldiers steal art from Jewish homes and would take specific works he wanted, showing his desire to strip everything from Jews.
This document summarizes a research project exploring digital art and how to connect private and public art collections online. The project aims to 1) understand how private collectors currently organize online databases and if they can connect with public collections, 2) determine the technical, organizational, and art history efforts needed to connect these collections into a richer database, and 3) develop ways to distribute the interrelated content through an interface while respecting intellectual property. The project is looking for experts in metadata, information retrieval, graphical user interfaces, business models, and platform development to help achieve these goals.
Museums have evolved over time from collections of artifacts and ideas in ancient times to institutions that preserve and educate about human and natural heritage. They grew out of temples and churches in antiquity and the middle ages. The modern museum emerged in the 15th century and became truly public institutions after the French Revolution, with structures now designed to complement their collections. Museums can be purpose built or conversions and come in many types defined by their subject matter such as art, history, science and more. They serve the non-profit purpose of educating society through acquiring, preserving and exhibiting tangible and intangible heritage.

3. “A good museum attracts, entertains, arouses
curiosity, leads to questioning and thus
promotes learning. (...) The Museum can help
people only if they use it; they will use it only if
they know about it and only if attention is given
to the interpretation of its possessions in terms
they, the people, will understand”.
John Cotton Dana
4. “Today, museums of art are built to keep
objects of art, and objects of art are bought to
be kept in museums. As the objects seem to do
their work if they are safely kept, and as
museums seem to serve their purpose if they
safely keep the objects, the whole thing is as
useful in the splendid isolation of a distant park
as in the centre of the life of the community
which possesses it. Tomorrow, objects of art
will be bought to give pleasure, to make
manners seem more important, to promote skill,
to exalt handwork, and to increase the zest of
life by adding to it new interests.”
