The six (6) important ports of the World 2019 :.
1. Port of Shanghai, China marked another high record container throughput during 2019,
handling 43.3 million TEUs. Namely, the port noted a 3% increase in its cargo throughput, in
comparison with the 42.01 million TEUs of 2018. This is the 10th year in a row that the port
maintains its top position as the busiest container port in the world.
These figures are impressive, even by Chinese standards, especially considering that Shanghai is
currently just 3
million TEUs out of
the 45 million TEU
that the port had set
as a target for 2040.
The Shanghai port
is also home to the
world's largest
automated
terminal, the
Shanghai Yangshan
Deep Water Port,
which began
operations in late
2017.
2. Port of Singapore, Singapore
Singapore's container throughput rose 1.6% to 37.2 million TEUs in 2019.
The port handled a total of 626.2 million tonnes of cargo in 2019, whilst the vessel arrival tonnage
hit 2.85 billion Gross Tonnage (GT) in 2019. Singapore also registered a bunker sale volume of 47.5
million tonnes.

Singapore port offers connections to more than 600 ports in 123 countries on 6 continents, with
130,000 ships passing through its docks each year.
It is also the largest transhipment port in the world, hosting around 20% of the world's containers.
When the project is completed in 2040, the Tuas Port is expected to be the largest fully automated
terminal in the world, with a capacity of 65 million TEUs.
3. Shenzhen Port, China
TEUs managed in 2018: 27.74 million
The Port of Shenzhen is one of the busiest and fastest-growing ports in the world. It is located in
China and serves as a base for trade between Hong Kong and Mainland China
Shenzhen Port is the third-largest port in the world and the second-largest port in China.
The name is used to refer to a number of ports located in the region, including the ports of Yantian,
Chiwan, Dachan Bay, and Shekou.

4. Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, China
Ningbo Zhoushan port, China’s busiest port, saw cargo throughput exceed 1.1 billion tonnes in
2019, official statistics showed.
This makes the port in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province the only one in the world to exceed such
volume, according to statistics released by Zhejiang port and shipping management centre.
Today, the port is known for the capacity of its infrastructures, which include a large terminal
where up to 250,000 tons of oil can be managed and a mineral loading dock with a capacity of more
than 200,000 tons.
The port is undergoing a massive expansion project, including the construction of a 10 million TEU
container terminal to be completed in 2020.

5. Guangzhou port, China
The foreign trade container throughput in Guangzhou Port, south China's Guangdong Province
increased by 10.77 per cent year on year in the first 11 months of 2019, according to the port
authority.
The port handled about 21.18 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit), up 5.83 per cent year on
year, which included 7.98 million TEU for foreign trade, between January and November.
Its deepwater port, Nansha, is responsible for more than 70% of the total container volume of the
Guangzhou port.
Port efforts to ensure continued growth include the development of rail accesses, a cold storage
facility, and the completion in Nansha of a fully automated container dock.
This latest project would expand Nansha's container management capacity to reach 20 million TEUs
annually.

6. Busan Port, South Korean main sea gateway in the southern coast, handled 21.67 million
twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) of cargoes last year, up 5.8 per cent from a year earlier,
thanks to increased transhipment activity.
South Korean port of Busan, the sixth-largest port in the world. Busan is also the third-largest
transhipment port. In 2018, it managed 11.46 million TEUs in transshipments, which represents an
11.5% growth compared to the previous year.
The Busan Port has four fully equipped modern ports – North Port, South Port, Gamcheon Port and
Dadaepo Port – an international passenger terminal and six container terminals. The port is
facilitated by 26.8km of quay wall, allowing it to berth 169 vessels simultaneously and handle cargo
of 91 million tons per annum.
The Port of Busan handles nearly 40% of the country’s total marine cargo, 80% of its container
cargo, and 42% of national fisheries production. The port handles nearly 130 vessels every day.
